Is PS4 going to be the next shmup console?

So, is PS4 going to be the next shmup console or Xbox One?

If Xbox One get's backwards compatibility to 360 shmups it might not be the PS4.

Neither will get more than a handful of worthwhile games. There's never going to be a better shump console than the 360.

I doubt much effort will be made to render the 360's shooters (or most 360 games in general, honestly) playable on the XB1, and so far we haven't seen much from the developers who signed on to the One (what brand-new stuff has even been announced aside from Raiden V and the Ginga Force sequel Qute is supposedly working on?), but I doubt the PS4 will do much to distinguish itself in this area either, especially considering how willing Sony was to cede the crown to MS after attracting such a strong library on the PS2. So far, at least, I wouldn't recommend buying either system for shmupping purposes, and I doubt that will change a heck of a lot from here on out.

Sadly I think the era of the 'shmup console' in any meaningful sense may be behind us.

Considering how random "shmup consoles" tend to be, I can't see why Wii U or Vita wouldn't become one. Not that I know of any console as "shmup" as 360.

Well, PC-Engine, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and 360 was definitely shmup consoles for their era of gaming.

But yeah, since CAVE is dead, it will be hard to get many new shmups on any of these current gen system.

Considering how random "shmup consoles" tend to be, I can't see why Wii U or Vita wouldn't become one.

You would think that "underdog" consoles might attract the attention of smaller developers (much as the 360 in Japan did), but when you consider how many such companies from the previous generation have either stopped making shooters or gone under completely I would theorize that if it hasn't already happened it's not likely to happen at all.

With the death of CAVE I would agree there won't really be any shmups ( as in traditional Japanese STG; there will be plenty of arcadey twin-stick shooters on the downloadable shops) released on either console.

However ignoring that, I would say that PS4 pretty much HAS to be the next main console for shmup releases. The Xbox One's sales are absolutely pathetic in Japan, apparently falling behind sales of the PS3 just a few weeks ago, so even in a scenario where STG enthusiasts only owned the Xbox One, shmup devs would still probably get more sales from the masses of random customers on the PS4 then they would get from a few guaranteed customers on the Xbox One.

Regarding those Xbox one exclusive shmups (the Qute game, the shooting love trilogy, and Raiden 5), has anything been announced about them since the initial reveal? Because at this point I'm starting to think they may be vaporware sadly... (Or more optimistically, maybe they won't be Xbox One exclusive anymore if they're still in development.)

Well, PC-Engine, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and 360 was definitely shmup consoles for their era of gaming.

360 was the only one practically devoid of competition (unless Blast Works and Shiki3 on the Wii made for a competition). PC-Engine didn't have Recca, Saturn didn't have Raiden, DC didn't have RayForce etc. - whereas competition had those.

PS2 came pretty close, especially if you factor in the PS1 stuff it could play...ironically, its biggest competitor on that front was probably the Dreamcast, and even then largely because of the post-mortem releases.

Oh I suppose Wii would be its time post-mortem Dreamcast... if only there was any way to distribute homebrew for it on bootable discs.

It seems like shmup companies don't like Nintendo. They haven't really had the shmup console since the NES. Maybe they have high licensing fees or something. I've read before that they give poor support to third party developers too.

Even GameCube got more shmups than the Wii (unless you count VC, which is no match for homebrew emulators anymore).

The correct answer is PC. Doujins like Crimzon Clover and Astebreed + 360 ports from Degica have turned 2015 into a rather good year for shmups. Despite all the doom and gloom post-CAVE's death. If I had to vote current gen though, I voted the XBone because of Raiden V, Shooting Love Trilogy, and Natsuki Chronicle. If they aren't vaporware at this point, that is.

tbh I feel like there's really no way to tell. STGs just randomly come out of the woodwork in a way that's hard to predict. There might actually be a wave of great indie STGs at some point, in which case PS4 would crush. But Qute is easily the best name in the game at this point, and so far they're leaning toward Xbone, as are Seibu/Moss. So I dunno. I feel strongly that indie devs are gonna get it together in a way that they haven't really previously, and PC and PS4 are going to be pretty decent shooter consoles.

Or maybe nothing will happen at all.
