Blazing Star is popular because of the MVS. Everybody with the MVS system has it.
Have you ever tried G-Darius? It is said to be the apex of the series.

I disagree: I own MVS carts and I dislike Blazing-Star. It never had anything as I recall playing it years ago and that goes for Pulstar too.

Blazing Star's two opening stages quickly grow very boring for repeated plays, but it hits its stride by Stage 3. None of its stages are overlong and padded out like Prehistoric Isle 2's and there's far more selectable ship variety. The production values are some of the best of any non-SNK developed Neo game, and it puts all of NG:DEV's derivative works to shame.

Prehistoric Isle 1 is severely underrated, though. Far better than pretty much every first-generation Neo game that SNK/ADK started churning out shortly after (except for Magician Lord), with its graphics being far ahead of Ghost Pilots and ASO II. Even coming after R-Type, its variation on the adjustable weapon pod system was ahead of its time.

Seems like most people don't praise the Sharp X68000 version of Phalanx. Air Buster was Kaneko's peak at popularity, too. The RayXanbeR trilogy and R-TYPE Leo gave kickass soundtracks. The Spriggan titles also don't get enough praise.

I don't think most people have an X68000. I also purposefully excluded non-ports. I'm not sure I could decide properly, there are still so many arcade-only shooters I haven't touched.
