Weird graphical glitches on Burning Force (MAME)

Post by Synnae »

Hey guys,

I tested the game Burning Force on two different MAME builds. (0.161 and 0.162) - and both emulates the game really awkwardly. I took a few pics to show what I'm talking about:

I'm really bad at explaining, but can you see that weird line in the sky? It's like part of the floor went up there. All I know is that it's not supposed to be that way. This video shows proper emulation of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly8wZuptM6Q

As you can see, there's no out of place line in the sky. I'm pretty sure that video was recorded from an emulator and not from an arcade cabinet. So, how come this graphical glitch only happens on my end? The person might even be using MAME as well.

Can someone help me fixing this?

(if necessary, here are my emulator configurations: https://www.dropbox.com/s/3w25rmize6d3l1w/mame.ini?dl=0)

If that's the same thing or related, it probably looks fine in MAME .134-.145.

Thank you really much. I just tested the game on MAME 0.145 and it works perfectly there. ^^

I have one question, though.

I read this line on the link you gave me:
MAME: - 0.145u1: Phil Bennett fixed titlescreen in Burning Force (The titlescreen should include a zooming "Burning Force" and some small sprites scrolling by).
Is mame 0.145u1 the same as mame 0.145b?

You can download 0.145b here: http://www.mamedev.org/oldrel.html

But on this page, it's saying "mame 0.145u1" so it's confusing me. Are the two the same thing or different versions? Because I can't find this 0.145u1 for download anywhere.

It's different. The "u" versions of MAME are incremental "updates" between major releases. 0.145u1 has some changes over the standard 0.145b.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Not sure if it's allowed linking to emulators here, but does anyone know where I can get 0.145u1? I'm not having luck finding it.

You'd be better off trying it in 0.146. The u releases [which are incremental updates leading to the next version number] don't get binaries released for them, just source.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Version 0.146b displays the "weird line in the sky" glitch, though. And so does all other versions after it.

0.145b and below have no line glitch, but the title screen isn't emulated properly. While 0.146b and above displays the title screen perfectly, but with the line glitch in the stages.

That means the ONLY version that emulates this game perfectly is 0.145u1. It's extremely frustrating because the newer versions are supposed to improve the emulation, not screw them up.

I'm sorry if I'm being too nitpicky, but it's just that I'd like to upload this game to my youtube channel, so I want the emulation to be as accurate as possible... :(

.145u1 is when the title screen was fixed, which seems to be the cause of the glitch during gameplay. Even if you manage to get a hold of that version, the emulation will be the same as if you're playing it in .146 (or versions after that, assuming no other changes have been made in general to the namcos2 driver since then). All versions after .145u1 have the title screen fix currently.

Oh... thank you for the info. Seems like I was just confused.

Well then, there's nothing I can do about the matter. Guess I will stick to version 0.145b because I'm better off having a glitch on the title screen than one during gameplay.

Burning Force Day 3 warp

Post by bombman »

Off topic but does anyone know how to activate the warp in Day 3 on Burning Force? It was either Day 3-1 or 3-2 and I managed to trigger it by accident last time I played the game which was a long time ago (the music and background objects all changed) but I can't find any info about how to do this online and I haven't been able to replicate it since. I was surprised to see it happen since I never got anything like this on the Sega version and I played that one to death as a kid.
