I'd rather have Battle Fantasia then Xrd, honestly.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
I might actually prefer that over some of the regular character designs...
If it really is BF, then that is seriously out of nowhere. Last I heard, the game wasn't popular at all when it came out, and I don't think it's gotten any more popular since.
I personally couldn't really get in to it. I never figured out how to do anything beyond some basic 2 or 3 hit combos, and there's no way in hell my scrub ass is doing 720 motions with the grappler guy. There's apparently some really silly corner juggles if you can do the links.

Abandon all hope: Battle Fantasia's PC version is being ported by DotEmu.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
Well, there was a 360 version, so that's got to be a lot easier to port to PC than most of their previous work, right?
Re: The Fighting Games news thread
Not really, DotEmu is rather infamous for fucking up everything they do, even simpleton ports like these. Also Raiden Legacy bullshit, no one should forget that.mamboFoxtrot wrote:Well, there was a 360 version, so that's got to be a lot easier to port to PC than most of their previous work, right?

Rumor has it that SF5 will bring back a pair of characters from SF3, another duo from Alpha 3, and "someone from Brazil".

Too late. I already abandoned hope when I realized Chernabog isn't in it.Pretas wrote:Abandon all hope: Battle Fantasia's PC version is being ported by DotEmu.

Yatagarazu Attack on Cataclysm came out yesterday on Steam. Anyone playing it?

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
I initially thought it was Necro, by the purple'ish skin, yellow eyes, and face tattoos. But he looks to be sporting black dreadlocks, and the face tattoo isn't very similar to Necro's original design. So I dunno...

Why do all the models in SFV look like they're poorly modeled with clay. I never thought any fighting game would exist that makes SF4 look good in comparison.

It's the "Why the US Ico box art?" question all over again. I blame the results of some market research.
To me, SF4 looked like they imitated Street Fighter comics books... and it sold well.
Was any Virtua Fighter past 1&2 (3D alone was the selling point back then) a particulary huge seller even in the countries still rich in arcades?

I think whether or not you like the style is a matter of taste, but I definitely see the clay model thing you are talking about. I think it's maybe an uncanny valley effect? Heavily stylized anime-ish character designs rendered in really high end 3D, the end result looking "real" in the sense that it looks like your anime action figures are actually beating the shit out of each other.trap15 wrote:Why do all the models in SFV look like they're poorly modeled with clay. The reason Xrd didn't have this clay look despite being high end 3D was probably because of how much effort went into making it not look 3D.
Re: The Fighting Games news thread
I noticed the clay look with some of the power waves when a couple characters use fireballs, as well.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
Virtua Fighter 3tb sold 330k in Japan, VF4 sold 541k (not counting VF4 Evo), and VF5 sold 120k. So nothing comes close to VF2's 1.4m on the Saturn, but the series was still fairly popular until VF5.Obiwanshinobi wrote:It's the "Why the US Ico box art?" question all over again. Re: The Fighting Games news thread
No, I mean actually clay, not like a figure or whatever. And it was sort of a rhetorical, I know the answer, and that's because Capcom loves outsourcing all their dev to poverty developers like Dimps who'll put out a shitty game for $5/hour and Capcom gets bank because a new street fighter!? omg guys.ACSeraph wrote:I think it's maybe an uncanny valley effect? I can't believe this.. the new SFV trailer for Ken flashes a completely new character's face and some people are speculating out loud which old timer they think it is. No it is not Blanka, Honda, Hugo, T. Hawk, Alex, Abel or Necro, etc. Don't be so damn dumb. Why would any of those characters suddenly look like that?
He has a V on his face, and the game is called Street Fighter V. Oooh.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
As the first HD arcade fighting game, VF5 was hugely popular in Japanese arcades and had a long-lasting tourney scene with major backing from Sega. Of course, the series wasn't nearly as much of a force on consoles at that point, and it can't have helped that the vanilla PS3 version lacked online play entirely.iconoclast wrote:Virtua Fighter 3tb sold 330k in Japan, VF4 sold 541k (not counting VF4 Evo), and VF5 sold 120k. While they didn't have much enduring popularity, Fighting Vipers and Last Bronx were notable flash-in-the-pan successes for Sega within Japan, with the latter receiving quite a bit of supplemental media (including a terrible live-action film).
