Thunder Force V Psx and Sat versions

Post by lawnspic »

I just wanted some opinions on which version is better. I have both for Sat and Psx and i think they are closely matched though some feel different.

Yeah... they both have their strengths and weaknesses. It's been a long while since I've physicaly compared both, but the most prominent thing I rember is the bosses looking better on the PSX. Saturn simply can't render 3D shit. Looks like garbage.

Worth owning either really. Whichever one is available at a better price.

I own the Saturn version BTW.

I own both, and the only difference I ever noticed was the opening intro being far superior on the PSX version. Plus, the PSX version has that nice art gallery that you can unlock. I love the artwork. But, I find myself playing the Saturn version more often. I prefer using the Saturn controller over the PSX controller. But that's just me. And the music seems a bit cleaner in the Saturn version.

Animation is better on the Saturn version, cleaner sound, crisper menus.

Saturn has more than enough power to render 3D, but it's of course known for kick ass 2D. Many companys never harnessed the power of the system. Radiant Silvergun, and Soukyugurentai definitely don't look like "garbage" to me. NiGHTS, and Thunder Force V are pretty good too.

Nights is hideous. And I say this just having played a week of Nintendo 64.

Never said it was flawless, or anything. Wasn't trying to compare it to RS. Also, 64's not completely horrid. Mario looked pretty good for it's time...

Since we're talking about a 1st (or maybe 2nd) generation polygonal shmup, the graphics ain't going to be perfect no matter which one you get. But since it's a shmup, I'd go with the better animation & graphics in the Saturn version.

I've got the PSX version -- I never could find the Saturn version.

PS: The Saturn was able to do really nice 3D in it's day. Not very many developers took the time to get that level of performance, but there are a few out there. The afore mentioned Radiant Silvergun is a Saturn game. Panzer Dragoon II Zwei is really nice looking too. And there's a cool demo of Shenmue showing the Saturn at full power.

I have both versions.

THe Saturn version has better graphics actually... there are much more details on the backgrounds and stuff.

The PSX has the Boss rush mode, a few extras, a cool intro and nearly no slowdown (The saturn version has slowdown in many spots)

So if slowdown is a problem for you, stick with the PSX version.

If you like cool graphics, stick with the Saturn version (Even though in days of Gradius V, neither version has decent graphics anyway)

Oh, and I only play the Saturn version, because the Saturn pad is a lot better :)

I think the dualshock analog stick does wonders with Free Range.

And of course I love Free Range: my stage course is 3 1 2 so that I can get free range earlier, I rarely switch weapons and just quit game if I am shot and loose that weapon.

So imho, saturn rev looks nicer for backgrounds and stuff, while psx rev plays better. Less slowdown also.

I'd say there's a reason the PS1 version's subtitle is "Perfect System".

Always wise to listen to the person who uses the franchise's name as his user name.

Hardly a fact. Just a matter of taste and opinion really. IMO NiGHTS is one of the best games ever.

Indeed. And IMO NiGHTS is one of the prettiest games of the 32-bit era.

Have to say I much prefer the Saturn version.

I do have both, and while the elimiation of the odd bit of slowdown in the PSX version is undeniably a good thing, it just looks and feels so much better to me on the Saturn.

The greater colour depth of the graphics, the detail in the backgrounds, and the increased layers of parallax all make it a considerably nicer looking game IMO.

And most of all I love the direct mode weapon controls when using the saturn pad too - 6 face buttons for the 6 weapons. Even better with the 3D pad. (But of course, if you have a nice 6-button joystick for your PSX, then control is not an issue.)
