GunCon 1/2 compatibility issues...?

Post by bigbadboaz »

I have both the GunCon 1 and 2 and have found they don't work properly with one of my televisions, a Sony KV-27V42. This is one of the last V-Series standard Trinitrons produced before the Wegas took over their entire CRT line. I recall Namco published a list of incompatible TVs upon the release of the GunCon2, but I find it odd that such a mass-market TV based on a common, well-known tube design would be one of them. Can anyone here shed some light on this? I would hate to think my only solution is to get a different TV.

Any TV that uses 100hz refresh is not going to work with lightgun controllers. I could not confirm if your model uses 100hz or not, so check your documentation.

While living in Tempe Arizona, my friend had a 35inch Trinitron and the GunCons didn't work so well on that TV. The cursor would shake back and forth, and especially toward the sides of the screen, accuracy was completely off - pretty much unplayable.
We always just thought it was because of the big screen, because the guns worked perfectly on an old 19 inch television.

This is interesting, but I still wonder if an oversized screen has anything to do with lightgun accuracy as well.

Cranking the brightness and contrast to 100% usually helps for guns that can't calibrate accurately. But 100hz refresh TV's will never calibrate since the guns calcuate everything at 60hz.

Again, good to know. I'd never heard this before, but pretty obvious once I read it
thanks

Allow me to conclude. :o

Home conole light gun won't work on the following:
  • 100Hz TV
  • 16:9 TV
  • LCD TV
  • Plasma TV
Does it work on a RGB tv/monitor ? :?

35" Trinitron

Koa,

Thanks for the input. That sounds exactly like what happens with mine. I'm beginning to think this is simply an issue with larger Trinitrons - maybe the guns don't like the cylindrical curvature of the tubes. Still, I find it odd that Namco wouldn't engineer for such a prevalent tube design.
