Hmm, I have no idea if the jailbars on the SMS can be killed as they can on the MD by cutting a certain pin from the video chip. Maybe you should use a Master System adapter on your MD/GEN instead ?

That may be an idea, only thing is you have to take the 32x off since it doesn't pass through the Master System convertor/adapter pins.

After a little research it seems it's due to the sub carrier being too close to the RGB lines on the video encoder chip. There's a few mods to fix it, I may look into them, but it's not a huge problem, just noticeable :P

If you don't plan on using anything less than RGB, I would just clip that XO input pin 6 (I believe) since it is quick and simple.

How important is cable length with an RGBs signal? I'm building a SCART to RCA plug adapter and my parent cable is 8 feet. Will that plus a 4 feet on the scart cables create any kind of problem?

edit: I just went ahead and built it and it worked great immediately. Yay!

You're looking at about 10 meters (approximately 32 ft) before you need to use an amplifier. In your case, you have good headroom to work with.

Are most TV adjustment screwdrivers the same? My BVM manual calls for 'the supplied screwdriver' for any adjustments in the DA and DC boards. Do I need to hunt down this, or is it just a plastic screwdriver so people won't kill themselves? Is there a decent source of buying these? Not sure if a Radioshack here in the States would have these - help?

And that has to do with the wavelength of the colors or something like that, right?

No, it has to do with interference and degradation of the carried magnetic waves.

FWIW I heard that advice when talking about VGA cables carrying high resolutions. I don't think you have to worry much.

Speaking of VGA and interference, I received a HDFury Gamer VGA version yesterday and hooked up my PS3 to my 40" 4:3 plasma in 480p. Unfortunately there are interference waves going all over the screen. The weirdest part is that when I am in the XMB I can just almost make them go away by going to the settings section and browsing the options up and down. But once I play a game (so far just Dark Awake) they come back again. They change direction, arc and density somewhat, but they're always there in some volume. When they're almost gone, they're in a bow like arch in a three inch thick strip in the top part of the screen.

Any suggestions? So far I've just made sure all the connections are as tight as they can be and wiggled the cords around a bit like an idiot but there's is no change whatsoever. I have not tried any other sources than my PS3 yet.

If you got a coax antenna cable (either from your cable service, sat receiver or dvb-t antenna) running to your TV, pull it. Interferences might be gone. If they are, you can put a galvanis isolation plug on the antenna cable and plug it back in.

No such thing plugged in. The VGA cable from the HDFury Gamer is the only thing attached to the plasma monitor. When using my Waka upscaler on the very same VGA port there's no interference at all.

Wait, do you have another VGA cable running from your HD Fury, or is your HD Fury plugged directly into your plasma? Because the VGA signal in the early HD Fury's are not powerful enough to drive cables more than a few inches.

It's plugged directly in. The Gamer version is a cable with a dongle built in. Unfortunately the space between the VGA plug and the dongle is so small that I am not sure if I can put a ferrite in there.

Hmmm, maybe the signal is still a little too low for what your plasma is expecting. Maybe put an Extron RGB in between to amplify the signal?

Megadrive subject: should I get a MD1+MCD combo or MD2+MCD combo? I read the sound is better on MD1, but it looks kinda goofy with the cable connected to the front audio...

You could get a model 2 and then do a mod that recreates the sound circuit if you're comfortable with that. I prefer the aesthetics of the model 2 myself, and it matches much better with the model 2 Sega CD, but out of the box audio is really bad and you'd better be using RGB with CSync, they're more likely to have crappy encoders I believe.

Actually, the later Model 2's with the 3/4 size motherboard (maybe VA4 and later?) have pretty good audio, almost as good as the Hi-Def Graphics Model 1.

I'd also recommend a JVC X'Eye if you don't mind the space.

Forgot the 3/4 motherboard revisions were pretty good, it's been a while since I looked into Genesis stuff. Very easy to identify by looking at the bottom of the unit too.

Sega really had no clue how to make the audio circuit for their own console, did they?

This weekend I purchased a Sony PVM-20M4E.

Everything appears to be working as it should, but there is no sound.

Is this a symptom that anyone has come across before? I don't think it should be like this.

The previous owner seemed a little surprised that the speaker didn't work and gave a partial refund, he claimed that he had used external speakers the duration of owning it. This seemed plausible.

Edit: Also, is a factory reset a bad idea? The image is pretty good now (once I changed some of the non service menu settings) and I was only wondering if it might restore sound - which is far-fetched I know.

Why would you use that crappy speaker? If you're going all out for video, why not sound? That's the other half of the experience. These machines did incredible things within their limitations. Mega Man 2, Castlevania 4, Streets of Rage 2, all owe a lot of their classic status to their soundtracks. Get a decent set of bookshelf speakers on craigslist or something.

And NEVER do a factory reset. Just do a search for "factory reset" on this forum and witness tons of horror stories. It removes all the calibration done in the factory, which is necessary for the tube to function properly.

This usually fixes itself in an hour or so which is "good", but running a massive noisy plasma for an hour before sitting down to play is not very cost-effective.

Is there any solution at all to properly displaying emulated scanlines on a 768p panels? from consoles?

I guess a scaler would have to "line-triple" the 240p console's signal?

Noted.

It is a space limitation thing currently, slag the speaker off all you like but it is much better than nothing. You're right though, I should look at getting some powered PC speakers or something - for now.

I'll probably crack the back off and check the speaker situation though, just for piece of mind.

Edit: Nevermind, found the issue.

To remedy this:

Hit the Menu button
->
Go down to User Config and hit Enter
->
Go down the User Preset and hit Enter
->
Select Off

Hi all ! Am looking to get into the world of Supergun and was looking at the Sigma AV3000. But I was wondering, is there a switch to change the power from 110V to 220V on the Sigma AV3000?
Checking online seems to indicate that the Sigma AV6000 and AV7000 has such a switch but I can't really find anything definite on the AV3000.

Thanks!

There are actually two different clock lines that cross the RGB lines from the VDP in the SMS. I believe one or both of them is causing the JBs that are noticeable in RGB. Appears to be a similar issue to the Neo Geo AES 3-6. I've thought about just socketing the VDP and rerouting the signal traces to avoid interference. However, that's 64 shrink DIP pins to desolder!

Apparently there's an RGB only Master System that does what you're thinking minus the socket. I found this while looking up all the chips involved in the RGB circuit. Looks like they took the Sony video encoder chip completely off and have lines from the VDP through R6 R7 and R8 (I'm guessing resistor holes) and routed them with wires to pins 21 22 23 where the video encoder would go which is RGB out. Also the sync line seems to be the short yellow wire connected to C37. Looks like a lot of components are removed for this particular system.
