Aye aye captain, I'll have to agree because it's the only one of the list I've played, own. Otherwise I'd have to say moon patrol is high on my list of horizontal shooters

Progear > Deathsmiles. Never played Carrier Airwing or Mystic Riders and Blazing Star is 100% garbage.

Progear blows them all away but Akai Katana Limited Ver. is the most brain-orgasmic horizontal anything ever made.

Progear is my favorite shmup of all time so I'd definitely set that as #1. Beautiful steampunk theme not really replicated in the genre often, a huge risk/reward bullet cancelling system (later modeled by akai katana but not as tight), organic flows reminiscient of the movement of spreads in ketsui. I get the goosebumps when I proc a bullet stream. Love it.
The only take it or leave it for me is the soundtrack.

I'd prob throw Akai Katana up in 2nd since it's a fun 1cc and scoring feels a bit similar to progear.

Gradius 1 I played this in the arcade back in the day but I had forgot how great this game is and rediscovered it only recently via the Saturn's Deluxe Pack. Later entries in the series pummeled the joy out of the game. G5 is a great comeback title, but going back to G1 and seeing just how much of a leap it was in game design and how much better the balance is too means this is my favourite hori ever.

Oshaberi Parodius Kind of cheating I know but I love this series and this one is the highlight for me. Not least because of the great extra content squeezed onto the Saturn version with an arrange mode, two score attack omake games, fun co-op options and gameplay features, fairy search side-quests and loads of different characters with stats tracking for all. Running commentary too!

Deathsmiles Magnificent and so accessible. The 360 version is packed with content too with BL and other modes.

Sturmwind I know this has its faults but for sheer entertainment and the pure joy of seeing what's in the next level (something I haven't felt in 30 years) this old school game is hard to beat. The lower difficulty tarriff helps too - maybe not one for highly skilled players and high score chasers, but for those of us getting on in years and slowing down this is brilliant.

R-Type R-Type's brilliant design under delivers because of the over use of levels that require learning by rote. Still highly enjoyable though.

Defender/Stargate The closest thing the genre has to non-linearity. The pace is set by the player yet it still manages to run away with you. Magnificent - and will last a lifetime.

In no particularl order, here goes :

Winds of Thunder - PCE CD
Last Resort - NG AES/MVS
Blazing Star - NG AES/MVS
R-Type - Arcade
U.N. Squadron - SNES ( I actually prefer this one over the CPS version.. )
Thunder Force III - MD
Thunder Force IV - MD
Apidya II - Amiga 500
Salamander 2 - Arcade/Saturn
Xexex - Arcade

I really wish I could put Axelay in there, but it wouldn't count as it has overhead levels. 8)

No order:

Border Down
Deathsmiles IIX
Gradius Gaiden
X-Multiply
Zero Gunner 2 (yoko orientation)

That's really it, the rest would be filler.

random order:

Last-Resort: NeoGeo - played it the most and love it. Brilliant art design, music and atmosphere that 'made me' want to get a NeoGeo the moment I saw LR back in the early 1990s.

R-Type 3: SFC.

Axelay: SFC.

Gate of Thunder: PCE.

Thunderforce 3 & 4: MD - I like them both and cannot decide which I like the most.

Darius 2, gaiden & Force: various - with a theme that dared to be different and has become a favourite over the years.

Gradius 1 & 2: various - I have not played any of the other Gradius games but I really like part 1 for its innovation and part 2 for how
much they improved it.

R-Type 1 & 2: various - RT 1 was a ground breaker for me. RT 2 just polished everything and made things much harder - I still get nervous around the Stage 2 Boss - that throbbing vulva 'had me' far too many times :) It is a masochist's Shmup for sure but a pretty one.

I play more tate oriented Shmups these days.
