I bought a Castlevania IV on eBay and I'm wondering if it is fake. Here is the listing http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Castlevan ... true&rt=nc
The cartridge, contacts and label are clean. Mint clean. The back is one that does not have the sticker on it. I think not having the back sticker on it is normal. As far as the Manual and Box they look authentic with wear.
The Nintendo Seal of Quality is what pops out to me. I was surprised by how big it looks. It's bigger than my Donkey Kong Country, Mega Man X, Gradius III. The label was slightly peeling off on the upper left hand corner near where it would have to bend.
I'm at work right now so I haven't compared all of my games yet, but I will. I'll also open the cartridge soon to check the board.
Is there a way to make an exact reproduction? Can we actually get to that point?
(just fyi i didn't pay what the seller was asking. I submitted an offer.)
EDIT: Here is other comparison cartridges.
This one has a really ugly label (resolution). http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Castlevan ... 7675.l2557
Here is another that has the "Made in Japan"

Re: SNES Repro Concerns
My guess is game is might be legit, but possibly with a reprinted label. im no expert though. I think it doesnt look quite right for a mexican majesco cart label. probably best to ask over at NintendoAge. they would know better over there. You will need to open it to verify though.
edit:
actually im not sure. Looking at the other angle of the label it might be legit. it is on crooked though.

Yes is definitely on crooked. However, I think some of my other labels are on kinda crooked too, but they should definitely be authentic. Can you tell me who Majesco is?mickcris wrote:My guess is game is might be legit, but possibly with a reprinted label. im no expert though. Re: SNES Repro Concerns
they are a game company. they made authorized reprints of games. here is a thread talking about it:
http://forum.digitpress.com/forum/showt ... e-releases
i have read that their labels are more prone to fading/falling apart. thats why i was thinking yours looked too good. if the person left it in the box though for 20 + years, that might be why.
its most likely real. if you open it up and see an an eprom or a bunch of wires though then you'll know its a fake.

Yeah, looks like the Majesco release based on the DigitalPress link (B&W manual, molded warning message on back of cart). Majesco cut a lot of corners, but if it weren't for them there would be a lot less copies of certain games on the market.

Yeah, definitely not a repro, but the Majesco release. I bought Majesco releases of both Contra III and Super Castlevania IV brand new when they were released back in the day. If you look at the back of the box on the lower right hand corner, you will find the Majesco info, and probably in the manual as well. Here are mine. Thankfully the labels were applied decently, and have held up too. However, I haven't exactly treated them roughly either, just a little dusty.

Majesco was also behind the Genesis 3 console, and released a number of Genesis reprints as well.

Definitely seems legit. For one, the cart label trim is way too good good looking to be reprinted/user made. Usually they end up with defects in the shape of the label itself since it's cut by hand with traditional household items.
