Scan Line Generator Issues

Post by Skips »

I am trying to use a scanline generator with the XRGB-2 (I prefer a bit thicker scan lines than it gives) and am getting a weird contrast dipping issue. Whenever lighter colors such as white or light blue take up most the screen the contrast takes a significant dive. A good example would be on the first three stages in Super Mario 3 where you have a light blue background, the contrast dives significantly. At the end when you run into a black background from the blue background the contrast returns to normal. It is a pretty significant drop in contrast when these colors are on screen. The scan line generator I tried was the T-SLG from godlike controls. I doubt it is a defective unit, I had a cheap eBay scan-line generator that did the same thing as well.

At first I thought it may be an issue with the XRGB-2 not liking them however I had the same problem on a Sony dsc-1024. I have tried multiple VGA cables, same result on all of them. It only has this issue if an external scan line generator is connected too it. All three monitors I have show the issue so I doubt its the monitor. Active contrast is also not turned on on any of the monitors. Has anyone seen this issue before?

Have you tried to move the output horizontally ? (H_POS)

I had a color issue once with my unit and moving the image just one step to the right fixed it.
But that was in a un unusual setup (chained with another scaler).

Personally I only use the XRGB2's own scanline V_LINE option without an added external generator in the chain.
The lines are rather dark but I think it's better in the end, as unlike the generator-produced lines, the ones done internally remain consistently black over all colors on screen.

By the way do you still have that issue when using only the V_LINE option (and no generator in the chain) ?

No. the XRGB-2 works perfectly fine on its own when you remove the scan line generator. None of the settings on the monitor or XRGB-2 have any effect on it. Its honestly looks very similar to a termination problem. I have seen stuff like this when chaining a PEXHDCAP with a BVM however a 75ohm resistor between sync and ground fixed it just fine. That unfortunately did not fix it here. Also like I said, it does it with the Sony scan converter as well.

It might also be a TV setting. My TV has a "dynamic" contrast mode where it basically behaves as you describe.

Its not a TV, its a PC monitor. I also said in the post Active contrast is not on which is the same thing as dynamic contrast. Also the dip in contrast is when there are lots of blue or white on screen. It even does this with my older CRT monitor which most certainly does not have that feature.

No they're about 50% like seen on emulators, but indeed maintain the dark tone no matter the colors hidden under and around (that's good!)
I feel it's just the right amount as most flat panels can easily compensate with pushing up the brightness/backlight a little.

Just got a DISPL and it's 'HI' setting is even darker than the 2's, which is a problem because it's more difficult to find the proper brightness level and balance with such dark lines.
