monitor connection question

thanks guys, I'll open it up and check it out, and I'll get back to you. As a side question, what was your first game in RGB? not counting the arcades. Gaiares was the first thing I plugged in, it was composite, but after I get the genesis up in RGB that will be the first thing I start with. Just a fluff question I was thinking about.

First thing i tried was gundam wing endless duel superfamicom cartridge.

Its already an awesome looking game to begin with, (probably one of the best on snes) so rgb only made it A lot better.

I did notice though, that the Genesis does seem to get the Most improvement from Rgb out of the consoles I have. And also the NES.

I was already using S-video on the snes so i didnt see as much improvement.

so I got tired of waiting, took my practice genesis and a old component cable and soldered it to the board on the R,G,B, and S. then used phono to BNC converters. I get it on screen, but only without the sync, and it is all scrambled. like a vertical hold is screwed up. every once in a while it will stop but the picture is down in the lower left corner, and when I first start the game up, it will stop on the title screen, perfectly centered and all. but that's the only time. the genesis has been recapped, and region mod, all I have done myself. It works great, it looks great, even on the HD Panasonic I have. the RF Shielding is there, but not the top of the shell. I don't believe its the genny, unless its my connections. where do I start? I have the BVM manual pulled up, and searching forums. I hear stories of it taking noobs days to set these monitors up, wondering if you guys can help me speed that up.

LOL that's what it should be like without the sync signal. You need that signal or it's not going to work.

Well, if you're new to using a BVM, you might just need to double check that you've selected RGB and also selected external sync.

Beyond that, it sounds like you've tried to connect sync, but really didn't.

I tried the sync and got a black screen. I did select RGB and tried both sync settings. I'll try again, I see in the genny pin out that there is a sync and composite. I hooked up to the sync, but I see some systems use the composite for sync, is that what I should be using? I didn't think so, because there is sync available. I can't try it now, I gotta go do family stuff. I will tonight, I will also check my solder points again an see if I used the wrong pin.

Yes, you can use composite video as sync. It's standard on the first Genesis.

The composite sync signal out of the model 1 Genesis is actually straight out of the VDP with no amplification whatsoever. You can fix this by either using composite video for sync or you can do a minor modification to get proper amplified composite sync.

ok guys, sorry I've been crazy busy. I got the genesis hooked up with the composite and it looks great, I think I'm going to have to play with the adjustments for a while to tune it in better, any broad stroke suggestions? Also will the picture quality get any better if I used the sync with an amp? Thank you all for helping me get my first RGB set up going in good time, maybe four hours if you condensed it all down to the time I have actually worked on it. you've helped me take my first steps out of noobhood.

The first Genesis model has an issue with the RGB output, giving jail bars on blue backgrounds. It's like that on every PAL console I've seen, but I haven't used an NTSC-U to my knowledge and some people say it doesn't have the problem.

All MDs have the problem. You can kill the jailbars with a small internal mod. By switching from composite video to the sync output (+ capacitor in line) you can minimize the jailbars without doing the mod.
