Gunbird 2 EEPROM NG! But still seems to play fine...

Post by loopyeddie »

Like the title says, on start up it says EEPROM NG! But I haven't noticed any problems while playing. Would this be a bad EEPROM for sure? I think there are 3 socketed roms on the board. If I have new ones burned should it fix the error? Oh, I did try to change the setting to demo sound on, and even though it says it saves, it isn't on, and when I go back into settings it is off again.

Also, the sound is okay but there is a slight hiss that can be heard when other sounds aren't playing. Is this normal for this game? Need new caps maybe?

Thanks!

EEPROM is not the same thing as EPROM. EE is electronically erasable. These tend to be tiny chips that hold tiny amounts of information that the pcb can read and write to. In some cases it could be a value that the game needs to run but mostly it's stuff like service settings and hiscore tables. I'm not familiar with that hardware but it sounds like it just used it for settings so the only thing you will have wrong is the settings will go back to default each bootup. If you post a hi res pic of the board I can probably find the eeprom and you could get someone to swap it out for you. They are usually 8 pin chips.

Not sure about the sound issue but I seem to recall problems like that being reported on Psikyo hardware.

It's also possible the chip isn't bad and it's just whining for an initialization because it was powered off during a write or something. Try going into service mode / maintenance code and use 5-3-5-7-3.

Tried this and it said All Data Initialized, but the problem remains. I'll get some pics posted in a bit.

Well, I might be wrong but, at U27 and U28 are 2 spots for eeproms to go. If any other chips on the board are eeprom, I'm not recognizing them. I don't know why they would both be empty. I would guess that one of them was originally populated and it went bad so someone removed it and just didn't bother replacing it since it works without it. It would be helpful if someone else with the board checked those 2 spots. But it looks like it's completely missing.

Damn, good eye. I checked mine and there's one at the U28 spot.

...also just noticed on one of the socketed chips on mine a pin is bent out and attached to a resistor (or something) before going into the socket. Edit: U18

So he just needs this cheap replacement and then solder it on and probably run the initialization code again.

Wow, that would be fantastic. Can I try this without risking damage to the board?

Thanks!

Any time you put a hot soldering iron to a board there is some level of risk involved. I can talk you through it though if you want.

Oh I understand that. I know how to install the chip. I'm just wondering if for some reason we are wrong about the chip being missing, can having it installed fry anything. I'm not worried though, I'll get the chip and report back!

Thanks a million!

I have a Dragon Blaze with the same eeprom error, though it seems to play perfectly fine. That maintenance code gives an error -- is there one for this game, and would you suggest replacing the eeproms?

After a few hours of play it began freezing and restarting. Not good...

I replaced the eeprom but now the board just boots to a "security ng!" message, which it sometimes gave with the bad eeprom.

Ideas anyone?
