What's the best way to get RGB from an NES?

Post by atheistgod1999 »

Right now, I'm using an NES toaster (why do people call it that?) on a BVM-20F1U via composite. When I mentioned this in a previous thread, everyone said I should be using RGB. I know how to solder pins and that stuff, but the new NESRGB chip is too damn hard for me; if I try that, I'm probably going to accidentally break my NES. The Analogue NT looks incredible, but it's way too expensive for me. What should I do?

The NES RGB kit isn't for beginners, desoldering the PPU is tricky. Better leave it to someone with a desoldering gun. It's worth spending some money having someone do the install for you

The Nesrgb IS the best way to get rgb out of your nes.

I wonder how much a TV repair shop would charge to desolder the PPU if you brought in the PCB. I think it's worth a shot. You could even try and see and then onder a NESRGB.

Yeah take to someone with soldering skills. From my experience some of them even find the RGB mod to be a bit tricky so it's not recommended for starters. My Nes got an RGB installment by a guy in Sweden who's usually really skillful when it comes to mods but something went terribly wrong at first try and the motherboard got fried. The PPU survived though so it was moved to another Nes and the mod was finished there. I had to wait nearly nine months to get it back but it was certainly worth it.

Doesn't sound very skillful if the NES got fried (!).

If you live in the USA, "Yurkie" over at Atari Age does quality work. Since I didn't feel like sending in an NES unit, I just paid him to send me a pre-modded NES console. The sucker was in pristine condition with non-faded plastics and looked even better than my console deck. The downside is it wasn't cheap. I paid a total of $279 shipped, which is better than any ebay console deal I've seen.

I once almost fried an Nes myself. One of the leads from the power supply had gotten stuck and when I turned on the Nes it started smoking. Luckily I found the issue and it was saved. I think the same thing happened to him which unfortunately is a mistake anyone can do. :(

Actually installing the NESRGB in my NES was my first real mod, and everything went fine at the first attempt. To be honest I wasn't a total noob with electronics, but I had never done anything like that with a soldering iron. I guess a bit of luck helped :).

Anyway, the only difficult part is the removal of the PPU, the rest is pretty basic stuff, just follow the instructions carefully and check all connections twice. For the PPU I used a 12€ desoldering iron, it made the job a lot easier, apart from those damn 3-4 pins connected to the ground plane (which are actually the pins that deliver RGB signals in the Playchoice PPU!!!), with which I had to use the "blob" method.

On a side note, I found it harder to remove the CIC, it looks like most pins are connected to large pads that waste heat from the iron. I also had some trouble with my Famicom, where a PPU pin broke during the removal, but I think it was faulty to begin with. Anyway I managed to save the PPU.

I don't do mods on a regular basis but I could use a little bit of money right now, so I'd be willing to do the mod if you're interested. I've done the old school PC10 PPU RGB mod as well as the NESRGB twice, so I am very familiar with the process. I also have a few of the 3D-printed multiout connectors on hand, so I could give your NES a multiout connector like the SNES/N64/GameCube use.

I'm located in Louisiana. Let me know if you're interested.
