Gameplay:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8ZYHvpY3P4

I love how smooth and 'blue skies' the open shooting segments look. Though anytime they showed the tablet, it wasn't as appealing... I guess I just won't use it (or maybe it'll be actually different to use).
All the transformations looked interesting... I especially liked the tank changing into a ship in the canyon area. Reminds me of the smooth transformations in the PS2 Transformers game. And co-developed by Platinum no less!

After a severely disappointing lack of the new Ace Combat that was supposedly teased by Kono on Instagram, I guess this was a nice thing to see. Gameplay looks cool, and since Platinum is involved with this, I really want to see if Krystal is in it, considering their experience with Bayonetta ;)

It's a 3D shmup, so this is right where it belongs.

Seeing all those transformations (though they do look pretty neat) I am a bit concerned that they're going to spend too much time with open world combat on the ground again without enough scrolling shooting segments like what happened with Assault.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Yeah this looked cool. Seems like it might not be on-rails this time, which could be interesting. The rest of the nintendo conference however had way too many things we had already seen before, and just too much mario and zelda in general.

I was naive enough to hope for a new f-zero game. ;_;

Yeah, those first two flying segments looked pretty cool. Like the section where they fly away from the purple-ish floating fortress thing and turned back around. I wouldn't mind a 'wide on-rails' sort of thing where you have some space to play and head left/right while still moving towards a general direction (that is, much wider than the original).

I don't think it is. But it's for "special" parts. Some journalists have had some positive and some have had negative.

It seems like the negative, was just because he didn't understand that he could still aim, without the pad. The pad is for certain moments, but not all the time.
From what I gather, anyway.

The graphics are rough, I'm not going to lie. But I hope for the best.

I mean, the graphics are actually worse than the early Devil's Third footage, that everyone puked on.

Even before I saw the Arwing turn into a walker I was getting vibes of Starfox 2; Nintendo plundering their retro cache for ideas?

Miyamoto himself said that they took the mechanic from Starfox 2.

I desperately want this to be good, the control scheme sounds weird on paper, and journalists seem split on whether they like it or not so... could be a love/hate game, much like SF Assault (which I liked quite a bit).

I wonder if its too late to fix the controls if they get bad feedback from E3 attendees.

I'm just happy the series isn't dead.

I also want another one, except, I want something like the F-zero/Wave Race 64 prototype that was shown back in 1995's E3 that was super fast futuristic powerboats on water. Like a Hydro Thunder on steroids, THAT would be cool.

The controls are the reason the game doesn't look very good. So, I doubt they would backpedal on that.

It's a so-so looking game, running on two screens.

The gimmick might work. I'm curious. It's not a looker, that's for sure.

I'm actually hoping that parts of it will still be on-rails, because although on-rails game design is usually the subject of criticism among the gaming community nowadays, it can result in more focused level design, looking from the trailer it appeared that the space levels may be that "wide on-rails" design you mentioned.

Splatoon has gyro aiming enabled by default, but does not force it. No reason to assume this won't be the same way.

Ya damn right. I read shortly after that, that the gyro CAN be turned off. Nintendo of Japan tweeted it.
So, I was wrong.

I was disappointed that Nintendo never experimented with the flying racing style planned for the cancelled VB G-Zero/Zero Racers (at least not in a F-Zero game). I would love to see that in a 3D F-Zero game.

can we please move this back to shmups chat? the term "shmup" is so sketchy anyway, and star fox is so close to it in ways that contra/metal slug isn't.

Just got back from E3. I had the opportunity to play Starfox Zero (in fact, it was one of the only games that I did have a chance to play). I quite liked it overall. A few thoughts:
  • -- Overall gameplay is very familiar to anyone who's played a Starfox game before, but the control changes will take some getting used to
  • -- Aiming with the gamepad gyro works surprisingly well -- but it is weird the first few minutes. It took me until the end of the demo to get a feel for it
  • -- The graphics aren't amazing (the character portraits in particular look odd and out of place) but the game does look decent enough; I didn't notice anything glaringly awful (besides some rough LOD culling and aniso filtering in spots, but that could also be a result of the in-progress version that we were allowed to play)
  • -- The cutscenes are currently unskippable, which is quite annoying. I really hope they add a skip option to the final version

Star Fox Command is up on Wii U Virtual Console.

Not the greatest game in the series by a long shot, but it may be worth it for the privilege of HDTV play, and the touch controls should be more tolerable on a roomy tablet.

Of course, multiplayer support is disabled, and that was kind of Command's saving grace.

The term is rather clear-cut, at least for such an obvious examples as Star Fox, which is a rail shooter and generally not considered to be a shmup. All rail shooters were discussed in off topic before. Why make an exception here?

It's not a shmup. If this is a shmup so is Panzer Dragoon.

But it's not.

I see Nintendo life has their usual "gloom and doom" article up. Given the E3 impressions, I'm glad it's getting delayed for more polish. November sounded too early giving the mixed impressions of the game. As for stuff coming this year, I'm looking forward to Yoshi's Wooly World (already out in EU and JP), Fatal Frame, and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

I'd rather Nintendo fix a game than release something half-baked.

Q3/Q4 2015 for the Wii U is strong, Mario Maker, Xenoblade, Wooly World....

Wii U Still has the strongest library of any of the current gen systems.... if only gamers would 'get it'....
