You haven't lived until you've gotten a lecture from a security guard (or better yet, beat cop) about the evils and suspiciousness...the something of shooting in public places with a "professional looking camera." Meanwhile any yob without artistic control gets a pass, despite their cameras being more suitable for evil spy work.Rob wrote:I bet. I know I feel entirely uncomfortable shooting in public places with a 5 lb. camera.
I'm getting an Original Pirate Material vibe with a few of those shots.

I saw a skunk when I rode my bike to work this week. It was standing in the gutter of the street, turning in circles with its tail held high

That's incredible. Those pictures as well. I need to make a trip to Alaska sometime.Rob wrote:Hope at least a few of you out there are living.
Absolute favorite time of the year. Light out until about 1 AM, and weather is perfect.

At local beach, with all my friends last year.

Is that you on the Mitsubishi, btw? Are you located near it?
Re: Shumps outdoors thread: summer-fall.
Yep, I live in Milwaukee. I suppose I was trolling the fudoh crt thread at just the right time, thanks to einzrlherst. I've been waiting to see you bid in it Ed
Re: Shumps outdoors thread: summer-fall.
Nope, I'm not gonna steal it out from under ya
Good luck!
That, and I haven't got much latitude to sort things out if it turns out to go wrong (they didn't answer the question I left so far, though I also didn't try calling).
Probably should have PMed you instead, sorry!

Haven't been posting here for a while, so here comes a pretty large dump. Taken from May this year until recently.

Varying quality depends on the camera used. Although I must admit I've grown to like some of the artifacts my cel phone can produce:

Reminds me of lomography (my first ever camera was LOMO indeed). There's been a problem with now-affordable, technically reliable digital cameras that pictures taken this way might look somewhat sanitised (as is the problem with games running in high resolutions ever since LCDs, having conquered the Earth, made it rather necessary). My history with the film CHAPPiE (seemingly shot, then processed with this kind of clarity in mind) was that first I watched a somethingx640 rip and it was fuzzy on my TV, yet I found some of its photography very nice looking (on the other hand, some other sights - not so much). Then the 2nd Blu-ray I watched was CHAPPiE again and neither the good looked that nice anymore nor the poor seemed all that embarrassing. It took The Man From U.N.C.L.E. watched theatrically the other day to reassure me there are some ways out of it left (looked pretty ORWO to me).
And that's how we do sunset around here:

Re: Shumps outdoors thread: summer-fall.
I hear about folks meeting their fate in mountains all the time (in fact my sister's close friend died on Mont Blanc), but it was a certain Yomigaeru Sora – Rescue Wings episode that gave me the most striking idea of things going pear-shaped up there.
Myself, although I can't quite bear fellow human beings any more than I used to, these days those desolate places feel somewhat lacking in their presence to me. As if me by myself wasn't enough anymore, or I was more needed somewhere else.

Re: Shumps outdoors thread: summer-fall.
Not sure about the episode's title, could be two episodes as well. Yeah, it's all good, if cheaply produced. Pure-bred thriller.
Granted, about 99% of Europe is nowhere near as "wild" as Alaska and the likes (maybe Romanian Bukovina is; I wouldn't really know). Usually, even if you can't see the people or citylights, hear the cars etc. - the area's unmistakably anthropogenic all the same. Nevertheless, even "small-time" mountainside may prove fatal when anything goes wrong and one's mother is not there...

I know I haven't posted on shmupsforum for a while, but I'm still alive. Here's some citypix for you folks taken at various points over the course of the summer. I might return with more at some point. Most of these were taken while biking

Aha, I know where those photos were taken!
Best thread on Shmups, and I feel bad for never sharing any of my own photos (wish I'd done that years ago; I might still have access to some of my best wildlife photos then).
Anyhow, I've seen shooting stars the last three to four nights. Nothing tonight, but there's a slight bit of cloud cover and the possibility of a t-storm moving in. Living in rural areas might be inefficient and selfish, but it does have its perks!

^You familiar with the area? I've got a few more pics I took today. IDK when I'll be out next. Hopefully I'll get out to the wilderness again before winter sets in.

^Not too easy to tell from this pic, but the RR tracks go through a residential neighborhood at grade here.

No, actually, although parts of the surroundings look just like Michigan.

^Yeah, I don't think the twin cities really stands out aesthetically, with maybe a few exceptions of older or otherwise architecturally interesting buildings or neighborhoods. Probably more bike lanes than anytown, USA, though!
The rundown industrial buildings are just something that I personally like aesthetically. There aren't too many of them (though in some neighborhoods there are a lot). Newer industrial buildings are usually just ugly, unfortunately, rundown or otherwise. The ones pictured here are mostly from around the turn of the century, I think, or maybe like 1900-1920, I haven't looked it up for a while.

20s-50s, my guess, based on the two you show there :3
Surving turn-of-the-century factories are relatively rare, and there weren't as many of them to begin with.

Jeez, I could use some weather like that right now. It's still pretty nice out here, but getting brisk and the last leaves are coming down - still doing a lot of walking outdoors.
