Will replacing the capacitors on my BVM fix my issues?

Post by atheistgod1999 »

I got a BVM manufactured in 2000 (don't know how many hours) off Craigslist a couple months ago. It's better than the consumer-grade trinitrons I tried before, but it still has some geometry and convergence issues that I don't know how to fix using the BKM-10R that came with it.

First off, the vertical convergence is slightly tilted. If the convergence is perfect on the left and center parts of the screen, the extreme right (last 5th of the screen) has the red about 3/4 of a scanline higher. This is only noticable when I'm playing certain games, though.

Another thing is pincushion distortion. The bottom right corner has a slightly lower level of distortion than the other parts, so when I corrected the distortion on all the other parts, the bottom right started to curve slightly inward. There's also a *TINY* bit of stretching 2/5 from the left side of the screen.

I mentioned these issues before, and people told me to get the capacitors replaced. I asked an electrical engineer if that's what I should do, and he said that it would only help if the screen's shaking, which it isn't. Should I do this? I'll add pictures when I find my good camera.

Really, Its not how old the capacitors are But how much they have been used that makes them start leaking. Ive not heard of a BVM that doesnt tell you the hours its been used. Its probably there somewhere.

From the main menu on your bvm, Select the status menu, then select status 2. it will show you the hours.

Certainly all or most of the PVM-based units will lack an hours counter. Also the 80s models without OSDs.
