Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
I still need to get NG Black for my Xbox1, but I'm on the fence of Ninja Gaiden II X360. I love what I played of NG Black and vanilla NG for the Xbox (my sister's former boyfriend used to bring it over before I had my own Xbox1 and I have played them a bit), so I definitly plan to get NG Black. I heard NGII is more on the cheap side and isn't as good as the Xbox1 NG.
Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
NGII isn't as good as the original--overly easy and gimmick-driven bosses, levels are aggressively linear, the scythe makes all other weapons obsolete, and the one-button kills don't quite work. Still very much worth your time, though.
NG Black is the definitive version of the original, and since it supports HD, it still looks better than a lot of 360 games. Sigma is really more of a downgrade. Same goes for Sigma 2, although that at least has a co-op mission mode with multiple playable characters that might be worth screwing around in. Sigma 1 is getting a Vita port, wonder if they'll add back in the changed and removed content from Black.

Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
The Scythe is overrated. It's super powerful, but it's hardly the be-all, end-all weapon it's cracked up to be; the Tonfas, Dragon Sword, Blade of the Archfiend, and the Lunar are just as good. The Kusari-gama and Claws are strong as well, but I'd put them slightly below the others. The only weapon that really falls short is the Flails, and even they have their uses from time to time. I also consider the linear stages and removal of all non-action bits to be a big improvement for NG2. They cut out all of the fat and made a pure action game.
NGB is still technically better because of how polished it is, and it doesn't have nearly as many glaring flaws as NG2, but it's still really hard to go back to because they improved the combat by leaps and bounds for the sequel. It's a shame that they had to ship an unfinished game, and it's an even bigger shame that the series is probably going to become irrelevant because of how horrible NG3 looks.

Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
The series' fate was sealed the moment Itagaki left. May as well pretend NG3 doesn't exist.
The only weapons I found remotely preferable to the scythe in certain situations were the Dragon Sword and claws. The first for its triple Flying Swallow, and the second for its aerial dive-slash-Izuna drop combo that results in instant death to throwable enemies. The problem with the scythe is that it seems like the kind of weapon that would have a huge tradeoff between speed and strength, like NG1's War Hammer/Dahilabro, but it's only slightly slower than the Dragon Sword. The spinning aerial strong slash is ridiculously abuseable, particularly against bosses, which aren't hard to begin with. The flails are still useful against Ghost Fish (a terrifying threat in NG1, now a minor nuisance) and destructible projectiles, and that's about it.
I mean, compare Doku, Murai and Evil Ryu to any of NG2's bosses. Genshin and Elizabet come the closest to being legitimately nuanced fights, but you can still pretty much just slash the hell out of them, falling back on health items, and their lifebar will usually empty before yours. In contrast, Doku will block every single attack you throw at him unless you goad him into doing the right ones, dodge them, and hit him exactly in the tiny window of vulnerability. It's a fight that feels like a genuine accomplishment to win.

Speaking of Platinum, looks like they're taking on Metal Gear Rising.

Edit: Fucking lol. It looks like fun, almost like Oneechanbara, but I just know fans are going to rage.

I actually prefer Sigma to Black.. to much extra content and a visual upgrage to ignore.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Edit: looking at it again, the actual gameplay looks pretty nice. looks like Ninja Gaiden but you get okami's cutting spell x99
Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
I'll be buying it... no problems with a change of pace.

Oh my god that Rising trailer ... lacking in many aspects ... but so fucking promising. I teared up. I love videogames.

Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
The original Rising/Platinum rumor said that Kamiya was directing it, so if that is the case, then hopefully it will come together by the end. It's looking really rough right now, but I'm sure it's still pretty far off.
also, needs more ZAN-DATSU

Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
I have to suspect that the game was originally canceled, but Platinum offered to take over development before they announced it. We heard literally nothing about it for months on end, and the mainstay voice actors weren't contacted.
Unfortunately, it looks like the Kinect/Move may be involved.
We should probably retitle this thread "General Japanese games discussion."

Well, since Devil's Third isn't coming out until 2013(sigh), I'm not surprised this topic has wandered.

Hmm, Kamiya confirmed on twitter that he isn't working on Metal Gear Rising. Interest lowered but let's see how it turns out.

It seems that THQ has some financial problems. I hope it will work out well for Itagaki.

Oh, well... It seems Itagaki needs a new publisher.

Ninja Gaiden 3 was pretty shitty so I have high hopes for this. It'd be a shame to see it fall into publishing purgatory.

Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
I am cautiously optimistic. I remember seeing the original trailer and being blown away , and hope that future footage rekindles my interest.
Itagaki is certainly a more interesting developer than Inaba imho.

Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
So this game is suddenly coming out in less than two months (August 4th in Japan, no release date for NA/EU yet AFAIK). The Japanese release is also going to be exclusive to Amazon, so this is set to be a bigger bomb than The Wonderful 101.
This is all from the new 10 minute long video that Nintendo just released (in Japanese, narrated by Itagaki): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ked9LPANFko
It doesn't look like total crap any more, but I can't say I'm excited for it. I just don't see anything interesting about the game. Melee looks a lot smoother than before, but I'm sure it'll be really basic with little-to-no depth or complexity. Shooting looks fine, but again, it seems pretty bog standard aside from the slide mechanic. I guess it will all depend on the enemy and level design, variety, pacing, etc. because the mechanics don't look special. Multiplayer looks like a cheap third-person CoD clone that will be dead within a month (being generous).
It might wind up being a good game, but you just can't follow the best action game ever created with this.

Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
I don't know what to expect out of the game, but it certainly looks a lot better. It looked early Xbox 360, last time we saw it.
It's about Wii U standard now. Take that, as you will.
Also, I don't see anything about the gameplay, that would make me think it wouldn't play as good as NG. But who knows?
I hate the Ivan character design (hate may be the wrong word...he just looks like Hitman and Duke Nuk'em with tattoos), but then again, I don't really like Bayonetta's story, side characters, music, vibe, etc...but I still love the game.
I have NO idea how the shooting is going to be. The Japanese aren't really known for making tons of shooters, with a FP point of view (in aim mode), so it's up in the air. I'm still glad it looks way better. My jaw dropped a bit, last time I saw it. And not in a good way.
I sort of figured Nintendo would help them polish it up. They're kind of sticklers for that.

It's coming on August 28th in Europe, in fact.

Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
I'm more sad than excited. I remember being thrilled about a new DMC, NG or game made by the same directors (Bayonetta and MG Rising).
It's like these games are dying off and this one just isn't doing it for me from the trailers. Plus it's on the Wii-U.... been holding off to see if that thing will ever be region cracked.

Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
With Fatal Frame V announced for US release (and almost certainly PAL too, the Wii remake of Fatal Frame/Project Zero 2 was released in every region but the US), there isn't a single exclusive game left that's worth cracking the region lock for.Strider77 wrote:Plus it's on the Wii-U....been holding off to see if that thing will ever be region cracked.

Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
I just buy the Japanese versions for lame collector/preference reasons.

If you're already willing to go that far to appease your collector's OCD, then what's stopping you from importing a JP Wii U?
I doubt there will be a feasible method for jailbreaking the system until some time after the final firmware update goes out. Not enough interest from hackers, tougher security measures on Nintendo's part. Well, unless a Pokemon RPG gets released for it, lol.

Re: Devil's Third- Itagaki's new game
That's only part of the reason. The other being nothing I'm dying for at the asking price. I'll wait till it's cheap.
I borrowed a friends since October. I keep for getting to bring it with me when I see him and he cares about it as much as I. He forgets I have it. I had it hooked up long enough to go through Bayonetta 2.
