I read the same is true for some of the more impressive 2600 and 7800 hacks (and probably for some of the better hacks on other systems, as well). Though in the case of 7800, I think the developer of some of the hacks, Pac Man Plus, had access to the source code (and he went from hacks to straight up homebrews, which are also well done). In response to some earlier posts, the kernal does limit what can be done with a hack, but I find the hacks that go beyond simple hacks and tweak the gameplay and levels to be very impressive.null1024 wrote:The nice thing about the Sonic hacking scene is that the hackers usually work with a split disassembly nowadays instead of direct ROM edits. More flexibility.

I've been playing some NES Rockman / Megaman hacks like No Constancy and Minus Infinity, they're all great.

Re: Anyone here play ROM hacks?
Playing Super Metroid Zero Mission on a console made me feel really good about my SD cart purchase. Since then, Mega Man X Hard Type has been fun, though at that difficulty I liked to do one or two levels and walk away - I don't really have a lot of drive to grind the Sigma stages. Oh well. If I had an NES flash cart I'd give Minus Infinity a serious shot, but as I'm limited to emulating it I'm not that into it (I'm terrible at jumping and shooting with my keyboard) Grabbed FFVI Brave New World which seems interesting, but I don't know if I'm in the mood for any flavor of FFVI. The hour I spent with it didn't come with anything in the way of radical changes, but maybe it gets more interesting later on.
Cheers to Frenetic for mentioning Famicom Detective Club - sounds really interesting and the high praise makes me think I'll pop that one on next.

Now that I have harmony cart, I like to play 2600 hacks. Some of the Adventure hacks are impressive. Other impressive hacks include a hack of Berzerk with speech that works on real hardware without any additional accessories, various Pac-Man related hacks, and a track ball hack of Missile Command.

Pokemon Brown is interesting. Lots of fairly major changes to types in that one, as well as a new map (called "Rijon"), and some newer pokemon added (it's a hack of red). I also started playing Pokemon Naranja, which takes place in the Orange Islands (mostly to practice Spanish), but got kind of tired of pokemon since then, so haven't played for around a year. A long time ago I used to play Sonic hacks. There's some interesting ones that add stages based on unused tilesets in Sonic 2 (Hidden Palace Zone, Wood Zone, Winter Hill Zone). I don't have any links, unfortunately, because it was a good 10 years ago, and several computers ago that I was into that stuff.

Re: Anyone here play ROM hacks?
I've tried out a few. I don't think I've ever finished a playthrough of one outside of translation patches(which I don't really count anyway despite technically being romhacks)
Should really try out some more.

I liked Amy in Sonic 1. It's definitely a redemption of her botched playstyle in Sonic Advance. Also, the speed you can get doing a hop off of a downward slope is fucking ridiculous.
If anyone knows of a ROM hack of Super Mario Bros. 3 that turns all the auto-scrollers into manual scrolling stages, I'm all ears. (I've tried Googling it, but maybe my Google-fu is exceptionally weak)

Only translations, really.
And the "fixed" version of Super Mario All-Stars, with the correct physics.
I also have the Sonic 3 "complete" version, on my EverDrive and emulators.

I think that guy has some issues, that only Hackerman, from Kung Fury can fix.

This thread made me wonder if there was a spindash hack for Sonic the Hedgehog 1, and indeed there is.

Or you can buy the Sonic Collection on Saturn, which I believe has the spin dash added to sonic 1.antron wrote:This thread made me wonder if there was a spindash hack for Sonic the Hedgehog 1, and indeed there is.
Re: Anyone here play ROM hacks?
I think the recent iOS version (not the earlier one) and the 3D Classics one on 3DS add it, as well. As far as hacks go, I like Sonic Megamix. It has all new levels, but also has a mode to play the original levels.broken harbour wrote:Or you can buy the Sonic Collection on Saturn, which I believe has the spin dash added to sonic 1.antron wrote:This thread made me wonder if there was a spindash hack for Sonic the Hedgehog 1, and indeed there is.

Re: Anyone here play ROM hacks?
I love rom hacks. Especially the ones that fix colour values, fonts, or restore the censored stuff NA versions suffered from. Also, some hacks have upgrades to the audio...like the MSU-1 hacks for CD-quality tunes on some SNES games, or the restoration of the Final Fantasy music for the GBA versions.

What would be considered the best Mario ROM hacks? I feel like playing a new Mario game on my SNES.
