Well that's a fine end to the series. Less comedy elements in this one than the rest of the series, but the action is quite good. Hmm, any recommendations of other things Fortune Star has put out since I'm finally done with the Aces Go Places series.

Mad Max: Fury Road; I am going back to see it on Wednesday. The last movie I cared to watch in the theater twice was King of Kong:FFoQ. Fury Road was the most mind-tickling, rip-roaring (yeah, I said it) action flick I've seen since...I can't remember. To be fair, I don't watch as many movies as the average person, but I know when to suggest a movie and I will say without any recourse: GO SEE THIS FUCKING MOVIE! Absolutely worth the money...was absolutely worth the wait!

Needless to say, an easy 4.5/5 from me. Highly recommend if you like J-Punk and/or zombie B movies.

That movie is one of my guilty pleasures! I had to search for a copy after renting it from the library. One of those, this looks so stupid, lets rent it and see if it is. Still pretty fun movie.

I checked out the trailer out of curiosity.

I ended up watching the Robocop remake on a whim last night.

I decided to approach it as its own movie and was surprisingly pleased with the first half of the film. Well... not so much pleased, but interested when the movie was about Murphy dealing with the body horror of his situation and the slimy corporate types acting generous and humanitarian when talking to Murphy, then behind closed doors seeking ways to make him less and less human.

Then halfway through someone realized they were rebooting Robocop and they needed to hit all the same plot points of the first movie, without any development, and it turned to shit. Boy wasn't it an emotional release when he emptied his entire clip at that badguy (the one with the hair) in the dark so nobody saw any blood and you could retain a PG-13 rating?

I also found it annoying that one of his guns was a deadly SMG, and the other one was a taser that made a boom sound, so you had no idea which random bad guys were dead and which weren't.

Samuel L Jackson was terrible. If you're going to parody Bill O'Reilly, parody the actual guy. Include the sarcasm, the snide self-satisfaction, the barely contained rage when he's contradicted, the usage of weird out-of-date insults like "pinheads." Don't just sit there and spout blind propaganda as the same character you play in every movie. The news segments in the original Robocop were great because they actually were acting like vapid news reporters of the 80s all smiles one second, then fake concern after a bad story, then back to smiles.

As much as it was blasphemy to remake Robocop, there was definitely the seed of a good movie in there when it was taking the story in a totally different direction, but the same corporate hackery parodied by the film proved its ultimate downfall.

Are you one of those guys they churn out all these awful template Hollywood movies for and have super low standards - or should I get my hopes up for this being genuinely surprisingly good?

Late to the party, but I saw Fury Road last night.

During the 5 minutes of downtime halfway through the movie, I actually caught the giggles because I had a minute to breath and reflect on just how outrageously intense all the carnage was. I also couldn’t help but think of the people in the audience who had no clue what it was they were in for. I think a few people near me probably thought I was nuts. I loved just about every minute of it.

The few things if I had to criticize, Max was basically just a crazy guy. Sure, it worked, but I’d have liked to at least see one partially fleshed out flashback rather than only the split seconds of his daughter dying. It wasn’t needed per say, but I was not very connected to Max like I was in the first 2 films. As for Charlize, she was great, possible a little too - Max felt like the sidekick most of the time in comparison. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take her emotional breakdown seriously at all due to the music selection. Most of the other music was fine, but a few selections felt too generic and out of place. The action and particularly the villains were all so over-the-top awesome, it’s got to be the must see theater movie of the season.

Ugh. There are so many legitimately good movies that I can't force myself to find the time to sit and watch, and I know all the people who are turning out to see these movies haven't seen them either.

Blazzing Saddles? Hell, Boss Nigger has more to tell us about the world than World War Z possibly could. It's probably a much better film too. (And I still haven't seen any of them, d'oh - working on it though.) World War Z was sad enough when it was a semi-literate book - about the same quality as a Dan Brown book really, arguably not even at that level. But who wants to read an ultra-literate modern roman a clef? We can't even get Thomas Pynchon into the White House. I think they'd let Kurt Vonnegut in only as an anti-establishment call-out, but he's dead so of course they'd say they'd let him in.

Don't waste your time with Boss Nigger. Fred Williamson is one of my favorite actors, but damn, that movie is bland as hell. Amazing theme song, though!

Well, I'm not sure what this has to do with movies now, but speaking of connections, I think I'll watch Nosferatu and follow that with Shadow of the Vampire (2000). Maybe sneak in Nightmare Creatures a bit more, sometime...that one's an odd play.

The General (Buster Keaton)

One of the greatest action movies ever, far ahead of its time.

Freely inspired by a true story of the USA civil war, with a goofy protagonist inserted: a Unionist commando steals a train in the south, but its engineer (Buster Keaton)

• chases the raiders along the railway,
• discovers Unionist plans for a major offensive based on a caravan of supply trains,
• recovers his girlfriend (who happened to be on the train and was taken prisoner by the raiders),
• steals his engine, the titular General, from the enemy base,
• goes back to warn the Confederate forces eluding a chase by train,
• leaves his mark in a victorious battle,
• is rewarded with enlistment as a lieutenant,
• and his patriotic girlfriend, now that he has joined the army, wants him again.

Stunts and special effects are probably the most jaw-dropping aspect for the modern viewer, because they are real: when a train falls through a damaged bridge, it's a real train and a real river; when people jump between cars, they do it with tons of moving steel, not with a green screen; fires and explosions are presumably controlled but certainly not drawn by an "artist". With the technical ability to fake anything, contemporary cinema is simply unable to show off in actually thrilling scenes the amazing talent of actors like Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin or Bruce Lee.

The excellent pacing (without the burden of dialogues) and photography are merely a sad witness of how little cinematography has progressed in the last decades and how little most productions really care about what they are doing, while the tone of many scenes and its cumulative effect is very interesting: many instances of very simple slapstick comedy (e.g. stumbling or throwing away things), instead of being merely silly, make the protagonist a nice person rather than a serious hero and paint all action with the right amount of irony. The sniper scene near the end has to be seen to be believed.

For the most part, of all Keaton was amazing until he signed the contract with MGM that ruined his life and took away his creativity. Steamboat Bill Jr. is my personal favorite, although yeah, The General is much more impressive and certainly deserves the praise for being his most well-known. You can really see the influence on Jackie Chan after watching many movies from both.
