Outzone PCB

Post by safetyboy »

Anybody know what value Cap is C34 on the PCB is and would this effect the sound? Just repairing one now.

And a a faulty FCU-2 chip could be a problem too, these are custom as far as I know. Is there another replacement?

Here is the boot, after a quick solder of the loose FCU pin it doesn't boot just wavy lines,

Looks like this PCB was badly water damaged, all the IC's were green on the legs, It was very hard to reflo some of them, the culprit seems to be the BCU-3 IC, there were a few floating legs on the IC, I managed to resolder them but it wont boot at all now just a green wavey screen.

I re-socketed all the Eproms and ram and cleaned everything with isopropyl.

I have no scope anymore to test the signal path but i reckon some of the traces are gone, Is there any toaplan schematics out in the wild?

There are no schematics for Out Zone.I had a similar issue on sprites of a Hellfire PCB and the culprit was one of the GFX custom ASIC.

C34 = 470uf 35v

The trace leads to pin 7 on the op amp so I would say yes it would effect the sound. If that doesn't fix it try looking at the Yamaha YM3812.

Personally I would try to get it to boot consistently first before attempting to fix the sound.

Sounds terrible. Got a pic?
