As such, I'm way behind on TV and have only seen I think 3 films in the theater since I moved to Chicago.

you now have the music box theater and the gene siskel film center to take advantage of for independent films & director/actor Q&As! not to mention landmark century cinema with leather recliners at the top of the mall and AMC River East which have some independent but a lot of standard films w/ a badass bar.

I've been eyeing Music Box for a while. Just waiting until the timing is right.

I liked Avengers 2, but not as much as the first one. It's not a perfect movie, but it has a memorable villain, has some nice dialog, and does more justice to Hawkeye. I haven't seen Fury Road yet, but I like the first two movies quite a bit and plan to see it. I have to see it first, but Fury Road sounds like something I would like more.

Fuck this, it's goddamn legendary!

Although I admit for the first 10 minutes I was still making up my mind, by the time it was over and I was fully comfortable with its pure parody and ultra tribute angle I was bathing in pure awesome. The guys who made this tapped into so much 80s win it's just... the best damn thing I've watched in ages.

Of course it is a parody of the 80s and therefore not the genuine article - but you need to accept that with parody you can indulge to the absolute max, and this does. It indulges so hard in 80s cliche that I couldn't help but give myself over. Just great. Best thing ever to come out of Kickstarter IMO.

And the music video is beautiful.

They gotta give me a sequel. Kung Fury 2: Kung Furier.

Some are certainly better than others, but in my opinion if you are going to get into the series you should definitely watch all of them in order with no skips. Just space it out. The last time I watched the series was a few years ago when I introduced my wife to it, and we just set aside one night a week as Zatoichi night which lasted half a year and was great fun. The thing is, not a single one of them is terrible, and it's a crazy unique experience being able to watch such a long-running series of films with the same actor playing the same character for all of them. It is really cool to see the changes in film technology, effects, and direction as you go along.

One piece of advice I would offer is to try and do a little bit of research on each installment before you watch it so that you can understand some of the meta/context. Year, director (new to the series? returning?), how much time had passed since the last one, and how many others they made that year, etc. It's cool to see the series switch from black & white to color. The first time there are blood effects. The changes Kago Shintaro made when he took full control of the productions, and how it becomes darker overall as time goes on and he becomes older. There is just so much to say about the series as a whole, and it's such a bizarre and unique outlier in the history of film collections that it just isn't worth skipping any of pieces that make it whole.

I've watched the first two and so far I'm pleased (must say I wasn't expecting that kind of development)

PS: I actually liked the Kitano movie a lot, precisely because of the typical mix of nonsense and how fantastic an atmosphere it suddenly builds at times.
As is it's great IMHO, not an issue if it has almost nothing to do with the original story and series, I just see it as one of his oddities. He always does whatever he wants anyway, a lot of shite okay, but sometimes he graces us with some awesome pieces, and his Zatoichi is one I believe. Maybe he should have picked a different title not to upset people but heh.

That movie is one of my guilty pleasures! I had to search for a copy after renting it from the library. One of those, this looks so stupid, lets rent it and see if it is. Still pretty fun movie.

I saw it yesterday. The action scenes and the film direction were epic despite the poor acting and story. It was still an amazing film and I haven't enjoyed an action movie so much in a long time.
