I wrote another indie game list for Caltrops

It's called "The Top 50 Non-Art Indie Games"

Have a link!
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Thanks so much for this. Lots of new things to try out. And like any true shmupsforum member in good standing, I agree with the sentiment of the preface... hehe

The only thing I have to add is that you should never write "Only recommended if you enjoy the game’s humor." in a top list, especially if it's anywhere near the opening! If you have to rewrite it as "fans of poop/THAC0 jokes will find this one especially enduring," do it!

Good as a bookmark list, though I'd have liked personal comments in more entries. Some of the one-liner reviews are great, though, like your dismissal of Rogue Legacy  You did kind of set yourself up by the time you got to #9, though

There is no greater proof that there is no god than the fact [Aces Wild] didn’t get the kind of attention Gone Home received.
If I wasn't so focused on preserving terrible things plutocrats say I'd sig that.

Ctrl + F ->"Cave Sto" -> No results
???
Just kidding.

For what it's worth, Matt has made some excellent freeware platformers. (Yes, the guy who included Anita Sarkeesian as a playable character skin in his newest game)
The Jumper games are classic, but other very notable games are FLaiL and An Untitled Story.

FLaiL is probably the best 'hardcore' platformer that I've ever played: it has annoying controls and that's the point. But the game is built to be mastered over a long-ass time, and it took me ages to clear the arcade mode without continues. (Well, there aren't continues to begin with). It also has a scoring system that prefers taking risky routes and completing stages fast and without dying.
Everyone should check this out.

The other game, An Untitled Story is and has been my Top 1 singleplayer game of all time for years.
It's basically an interesting metroidvania.
Yes, it has terrible MSpaint graphics. Yes, it has terrible MIDI-music.
But the world just got me addicted somehow that no game ever has.
Most likely because of the mysterious setup and despite aesthetically being ugly, it's consistent.
Also, if you're going to try it out, play it at Masterful (the hardest) difficulty from the start, despite what the info text says. That was probably another big factor for me.

Unepic was a last minute addition and really the only game I'm iffy about whether I should have included it on the list. Originally I was going to have Ys Origins (at a much higher position) before I realized that it's not really an indie game, it just looks like one.

Also I kinda wanted to include it in the article's spirit of bashing pretentious reviewers. There's a part in the game where you have off-screen consensual sex with orc women. This in a game filled with murdering orcs and harvesting their eyeballs and intestines for potions. Sure enough, the Rock Paper Shotgun review had no problem with the ultraviolence on screen, but when their homicidal rampage was interrupted by S. E. X. they had a long "eww yuck!" hissy fit.

This article is actually a sequel to my much earlier Top 100 indie games list. You'll find Cave Story safely nestled amongst the other games there.
