IGN "Feature" on Ibara

Post by Straber »

Long time reader, but I rarely post, choosing to instead gleen most of the info I need for the various posts & all. I was on IGN & came across this:

Taito Talks Ibara
Like import shooters? Then this may be a game for you.

Taito Corporation revealed today that it would be offering the "Explosive Capture Collection" mini-booklet for Japanese gamers that pre-order the upcoming PlayStation 2 shooter Ibara. It will include hi-res artwork and screen captures of every stage in the game as well as a few looks at the main character. It will be 16 pages in all and the entire thing will be printed in full color.

Now it's likely that you've never heard of Ibara because it hasn't seen release outside of Japanese arcades. That's okay -- all you need to know is that it's scheduled for a February 23 release and it's designed by the team at Cave (DoDonPachi, Yanya Caballista). Gameplay is reminiscent of titles such as Raiden and Castle Shikigami and there explosion count is pretty high
Rare is it that IGN ever refers to a shmup, but damn, was Yanya Caballista the only game they good think of as a reference for the mainstream gamers for Taito? Dunno about the comparison to Shiki & Raiden, but then again, I've yet to play it...

Play-Asia doesn't say that their preorder would come with the booklet...

I'm surprised they didn't say it was Rastan Saga 4.

The reason they mentioned Yanya Caballista is because it was developed by Cave, which, actually, I did not know until now.

Wow... Yanya Caballista was developed by Cave. A big WTF to that!

I mean, polygons and a console only game? That's the exact opposite of Cave's practices. Were they low on funds at the time they developed that game?

Steep Slope Sliders was Cave's other 3D sports title. Still not sure why SSS or Yanya were made, they're both pretty bad.

Well, what were they gonna tell a general gaming audience? The only shmups with a disctinct reknown are horis, Shiki is one of the few verts outside the old-school stuff that's had a run on the western market. They're just using what their audience might recognize. Really more of a reflection of how long shmups have been off the general radar.

/imaginary dialogue

"It's great, and it's really more of a Raizing game, you know the guys who made Battle Garegga!"

"Raizing? Battle Garegga?"

"Yeah, it was ported to the Sega Saturn. It's a shoot'em'up."

"Sega made consoles? What teh fuck is Raizing?"

"A dev team. Made some great shooters."

"I love shooters, I pwn. you can call me FRAGGLER."

"Not FPS. The ones with the spacecraft where you dodge bullets and shoot stuff."

"Oh yeah, my mom used to take me to the beach when I was wee, they had an arcade there and a game like you said. Raiden I think, used to play it all the time."

"So there's a new one coming out, and it's that kind of game."

"Like Raiden?!"

"Err...well, sort of."

/id

What are you gonna do in today's climate? EVERY shmups is like Raiden. Or Gradius if it's hori. We're just a bunch of very special children, undoubtedly loved by their mothers but with probably the most necrophiliac vg addiction out there. We're humping a corpse that has officially been dead for quite a while. Out there, in the real world .

corrected.

"oh yeah, the saturn... that had RSG right?"

"right"

"you mean, there were other games for it?"

I've placed my pre-order with ncsx, mailed them to see if they have any info as to whether they'll be getting the booklets.

...which is why I don't get why people snicker when they say it's like Raiden. Sure, the two games are very different but it's a genre distinction. A scrolling shooter is a scrolling shooter like how an RPG is an RPG or an first person shooter is a first person shooter. Fundamentally, the game play of every scrolling shooter is the same like every first person shooter is the same. The only thing that sets them apart is the nuance/set up of the gameplay, scoring tricks etc. They can say it's like Raiden, like they say that Samurai Shodown is like Street Fighter, as long as they recognize the differences between them when going in depth about the game.
