Help: DIY PS2 stick

Post by 1up »

I've given up finding a PS1 Namco stick or HRAP for PS2 at a reasonable price, so I look for an option to build one myself. I've built stick cases before and know how to get buttons, sticks, encoders etc. but nothing specific for PS1/2.

First some questions.
Will a Playstation 3 stick (USB) work on Playstation 2?
Is there an encoder out there that works with Playstation 2?

Or is the final option to hack a dual shock and solder wires onto the connectors?

I wonder if I could get a pair of Dreamcast arcade sticks that way...

Just get one of these encoders: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Zero-Delay-USB- ... 2c9ab2bfa9 and you're set, electronically. Works great with PC and PS3 as well. For a joystick shell, I'd go with one of these if you can find them at a decent price: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mad-Catz-Tatsun ... 33a3527bcd

This is what I use (modded) for my PS2:

Nice little PCB and shell, the parts are garbage but easily swapped if you have a Dremel or similar (start/select/function buttons are nice to keep though). Does PS2 and PS3, it has USB and a separate PS2 connector. Lets you swap the joystick for d-pad or analogue stick by holding two function buttons, useful if any game only supports one or the other.
