I loved it... then again, I can relate to Ethan Hawke's character due to my recent situation, and I'm from Texas.Skykid wrote:Is it really that bad? still haven't gotten to boyhood yet, but watched happiness (wtf) and foxcatcher (along with some marvelous misadventures of flapjack - lmao). also throwing "only lovers left alive" on the list even though I haven't seen a jim jarmusch film yet. probably not the best one to start with either.

To be fair, it only takes 4 years to watch.Mischief Maker wrote:You are required by law to enjoy Boyhood because it took 12 years to make.

Re: Movies you've just watched
mixed feelings about boyhood tbh. I found myself constantly interested in watching it. I thought the intro soundtrack(s) were hilarious with coldplay, blink, and whatever other pop music was popular at that time (I'm kind of a square in regards to the rest). That made it feel pretty lame at first, but I was still pretty into it. I still think it's a "one and done" kinda movie. Ending kinda left me feeling as if I hadn't watched anything for the past 2 hours and 45 minutes... if that makes sense.
Kinda blew my mind how much Ellar Coltrane looked like Ethan Hawke by the end of the film. Pretty great choice of actors - and surprising they stuck around for the full filming - by Linklater. Arquette was looking pretty babely in some scenes too.
hope to get through only lovers left alive tonight, but also nabbing delicatessen.

Kung Fury was good for a few laughs, nothing to write home about.
Watched Funny People the other day. I know I just made that joke about Boyhood being 4 years long, but damn, Funny People has to be the longest movie I've ever seen. I think after the first hour I only kept watching out of stubbornness.

I actually really liked that one and still kinda wanna buy it on DVD. it's a 'cliche' look of a 'behind the scenes' as a standup comedian which I found pretty interesting. Plus it's another serious Adam Sandler role though it doesn't top my favorite movie Punch Drunk Love. (reign over me was pretty alright too)Volteccer_Jack wrote:Watched Funny People the other day. Full Tilt Boogie
Documentary on the making of From Dusk Till Dawn (which I haven't seen since it was first released in theaters).
Total impulse watch, but fun and informative in that it gives a good overall picture of everyone involved in making a movie—grips (whose position I was always slightly confused about), caterers, electricians, extras, assistants... even the paparazzi that buzz around sets. It'd be cool to watch a similar flick on a modern indie to see how things have (or haven't) changed in the 20 years since.

Watched Cloud Atlas after finishing the book.
The movie is shitty, the only one doing any "acting" throughout the movie is Tom Hanks. Halle Berry basically playing Halle Berry-even in whiteface, Hugo Weaving playing Agent Smith in a dress at one point. Everyone else except the actor playing Timothy Cavendish sucked, too. I am mostly upset with how much the stories were butchered to fuck-Sonmi-451 and Frobisher's in particular. I expected more from the Wachowskis and that other guy, but they're just some bullshit hacks.
Cloud Atlas book: 10/10

Holy Motors: I don't know what to say about this movie, its not bad.....but I had to force myself to stay awake while watching it. Its about some guy that drives around France in a stretch limo and assumes different personas through disguises. Some of the sequences were interesting, but as a whole-I didn't get it. But I liked it, the accordion scene is uplifting and Kylie Minogue's appearance was heartbreaking. The film it most resembles is Cosmopolis (so much so that Cronenberg even references it in his film). I felt the same about Holy Motors as I did about Cosmopolis-interesting scenes and decent acting, but fails to come together as a whole story.

Edmond Bill H Macy is dissatisfied with his white-collar life so he leaves his wife and hits NYC's rougher side looking for existential enrichment, or maybe just poon. Out of his element in the mean streets, Bill's neuroses bite down hard, things go to shit, and it all ends very badly! (or maybe it's what he wanted?) A black comedy of sorts. I certainly had a ruefully mirthful time with it, though I could understand the frenetically recursive Mamet-script and nihilistic overtone irritating others. As with the much superior Mamet-scripted machismo bloodbath Glengarry Glen Ross, it's at least concise. Brisk direction and a semi-surreal, blackly tragicomic air keep things bouncing along to the horrible end at a nice, easily watchable clip.

My hobbies have been taking a serious back seat to real life. As such, I'm way behind on TV and have only seen I think 3 films in the theater since I moved to Chicago. The most recent was Mad Max. Sad I didn't get to see it in IMAX, but whatever. It rocked. So many action movie cliche's broken... and it feels like Mad Max. Really can't say anything that hasn't been said all over the internet.

Just watched the three films from 2014 that held any interest for me and every one disappointed.
Chappie - I like Die Antwoord. I love that they had stadiums full of people chanting Babies on Fire, but they grated like fuck throughout this. It didn't go anywhere and just meandered about for a while before the credits rolled.
Interstellar - really wanted to like it, but didn't. It was OK.
What We Do In The Shadows - best of the three. It raised a few laughs, but didn't live up to my expectations.

you now have the music box theater and the gene siskel film center to take advantage of for independent films & director/actor Q&As! not to mention landmark century cinema with leather recliners at the top of the mall and AMC River East which have some independent but a lot of standard films w/ a badass bar.
gotto try and hit up some of those spots while you're here.
- watched Delicatessen tonight. I oddly enjoyed it. kinda quirky like amelie but much darker - the actual atmosphere of the film oddly reminded me of amneisa: a machine for pigs.

I think you cant thank the second director for the dark stuff. Even with A Very Long Engagement, Jeunet keeps it very upbeat.Some-Mist wrote:- watched Delicatessen tonight. haven't even looked into 'a very long engagement' yet, but I see that it stars Audrey Tautou who is the love of my life. Yeah, I liked it. The reason why I got into the series is because it reminded me of Konami's Silent Scope series.Never_Scurred wrote:Its better than the first one?xxx1993 wrote:I saw Sniper: Legacy from my Netflix DVD. I actually like it more than the first three, and Reloaded.

So many weird characters but also IRL peculiar individuals in the Jeunet/Caro movies. What would you say about Ron Perlman ?Some-Mist wrote:also, dominique pinon is such a weird looking dude... which kind of fit the setting.
But the real oddball is undoubtedly Jean Claude Dreyfus (playing the butcher, also Marcello in TCoLC), this guy has alway been into 'special' roles and movies/plays.
