Pulstar... R-Type or no?
Pulstar... R-Type or no?
Pulstar was developed by Aicom, which if i am not mistaken was originally made up of ex-Irem developers. (Now i may be wrong on that). Anyway - the similarities between Pulstar and the R-Type series are undeniable. I've always liked to consider it a spin-off series that takes place in an alternate timeline to the original R-Type story. It's actually kind of cool considering that Blazing Star is the psuedo sequel to Pulstar and is so completely different...

I don't think Pulstar has any relation to R-Type in terms of plot, setting, etc. It's defintely an hommage though. Personally I really love the game. Actually, I tend to like all the R-Type clones (Xexex, Last Resort, Pulstar, Einhänder) better than the actual R-Type games. It actually took me a long time to appreciate this type of slow methodical gameplay, but now I'm hooked.

I fully agree with you Seven Force. There's something meditative about Pulstar (or maybe that's just stage 2Seven Force wrote:Actually, I tend to like all the R-Type clones (Xexex, Last Resort, Pulstar, Einhänder) better than the actual R-Type games. Not much to add to the comments above. Definately not in the same universe, but so similar homage doesn't do it justice. Calling it an imitation would be too severe? And rip off sounds so negative, the game being brilliant and all, although a tad too unforgiving, I think.
Now Rezon - that's definately a shameless rip off.

Even if I think Pulstar is quite a good game and I enjoyed it.. I think it is too much of a rip off. The level design, enemies and the whole game feeling is the same as in R-Type. They could just have called the game P-Type.
Offcourse Pulstar is a good game and they did very well. Because for me it really have a similiar qualitity as the R-Type games. And with Blazing Star they started something very more original. But I don't like how many developers copy original games very obviously. Come up with a little bit of originality at least.
Between Seven Force,
I just can't see the connection between Einhänder and R-Type at all.(?)
Why do you have the feeling it is another R-Type clone?

Actually I guess I shouldn't really call Einhänder an R-Type "clone" as it's too different for that (no pod), but I think the gameplay and style are very much within the legacy of R-Type.
- Slow (although Einhänder is actually not that slow) methodical gameplay.
- Memorization of levels is a must, as well as knowing when to use what weapon.
- A complicated weapons system, that needs to be controlled properly.
- Bosses need to be killed as quickly as possible.
- You die A LOT.
- Checkpoints.
- Extremely stylish audiovisuals.
I think it's safe to say that somebody who really loves the R-Types will also enjoy Einhänder for the same reasons.

You can bash on me all you want when I say this: Pulstar smokes R-Type in my opinion...mmm, but NOT R-Type Delta or R-Type 3. Pulstar does just as much w/ its weapon system as the latter mentioned, just differently.
Oh, and yeah and you'll play Pulstar more than you'll die eventually. But, to be sure to beat the game, you really have to "1-ship" it. "HH-HHH-UUU-HHH-HHH?!?"...Not impossible. You just have to keep at it. Some of you little weenies should strive to be more like Kiken - who's given the game hell and caught it on tape!
Me? I've been to the Final Boss. Don't think I'll need to go back, thank you.
