After playing hardly any video games in the past two years, and basically playing nothing but shmups and puzzle games in the 10 years prior to that, I imagine I've probably skipped over many games I'd have loved. I'm barely even a lurker here anymore, but I'll probably be monitoring this for ideas.

Roughly in order, although VOOT is in a class all its own. 8)

Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram
Crazy Taxi
Magical Drop III
Parsec47/Dangun Feveron
Tetris the Grandmaster 3
Puyo Puyo 2
Twinkle Star Sprites
Devil Dice
Gunstar Heroes

Obviously I'm cheating a bit by lumping Parsec47 and Dangun Feveron together, but the mechanics are near identical and they both have their pros and cons for me. The bigger cheat is that I've never actually played TGM3, but listing any of the free clones seems weird, haha.

Myth II: Soulblighter - PC
Splatterhouse 3 - Genesis/MD
Dracula X - PCEngine
Diablo 2 - PC
Starcraft - PC
Doom II - PC
SF II Super Turbo - ARC
Duke Nukem 3D - PC...

More fuggin' PC games, basically.

I backed it, and I have it sat there waiting to be played. I was waiting for the full thing before I got stuck in, so now that act 2 is out I guess I have no excuse.

Sadly, as I grow older and time becomes more precious I find point and click adventures increasingly frustrating. I love a good puzzle - the kinds of logic puzzles in Safecracker I would happily ponder for days - but as soon as an adventure game stumps me because of an obscure item I didn't see or a piece of convoluted or downright nonsensical reasoning, I tend now to throw in the towel. But those classics from yester-year will always have a special place in my heart.

My absolute favourite game of all time was called ARC or attack retrieve capture. It was an online multiplayer game originally hosted on Hfront then WON then Sierra. Hardly anyone played it, but it survived for a very long time. Essentially it was a top down, team based capture the flag game where you control a ship with lasers as a primary weapon, grenades, missiles and bouncy lasers as secondary recharging weapons. Almost all of the competitive play was done on one map but somehow it never got old to me even after playing it for over a decade.

  • Final Fantasy VI
  • Final Fantasy IX
  • Cave Story
  • Vagrant Story
  • Demon's Souls/Dark Souls/Bloodborne
  • Mushihimesama Futari
  • Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike
  • Puzzle & Dragons

1, Castlevania - Symphony of the Night
2, Doom
3, Mario Kart 64
4, Dodonpachi Daioujou
5, Tetris

Basically they're all games that got me interested in their respective genres. The more I think about this the muddier it becomes, Super Metroid should probably be on there.

Devil May Cry 3
Majesty (with the expansion)
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

These are all games I've spent many hours with and still really enjoy. Off the top of my head and in no particular order.

Mr. Do!
Pacland
Hyper Sports
Star Wars Trilogy Arcade
Mario Kart 64
Resident Evil 4
The Evil Within
Resident Evil Remake (GameCube)
Killer7
The Last of Us (for the multiplayer)
House of the Dead 1 & 4
EspGaluda
Dodonpachi
Deathsmiles (Vanilla and BL)
Akai Katana
Outrun Coast 2 Coast
Darkstalkers Vampire Saviour
Gauntlet 4 (megadrive)
Haunted House (pinball)

There's a few early 80's arcade games, then a jump to the late 90's and onwards. Not sure why that is as I loved the snes at the time.

In vaguely rough order:

Robotron: 2084 - Even though I'm terrible at it I think this is simply put, the 'purest' most intense game I've ever played. When you get in the zone the simple controls bypass conscious thought and you just react. The perfect arcade game.
I, Robot - Many good memories of playing this in arcades when it came out, the mix of shooting, jumping and 3D spatial awareness is perfectly blended together into an immensely absorbing game.
Mushihimesama - Original Mode is perfectly balanced for my old school tastes, scoring not too complex, nice fast bullets. Colourful graphics and a beautifully realised world.
Radiant Silvergun - I couldn't believe a shmup this expansive and epic was possible on a home system when it was released. A genuine space opera.
Ikaruga - Distilled the best elements from Radiant Silvergun into something that felt quite original.
Gradius Series - Its powerup system is pure genius and the varied level designs keep it fresh. The best shmup series ever in my book.
Space Harrier - The giant mechanical seat was key for immersion I think and the graphics so imaginative and smooth. Fond memories of being thrown around the arcade whilst mashing on the fire trigger as quickly as I could.
Rez - Love everything about it, the mechanics, the art direction, the pacing, the music - just inspirational.
Panzer Dragoon Orta - Such a wonderfully realised world and builds brilliantly upon the earlier games.
Puyo Puyo Sun - So much character and so much fun.
Anubis Zone of Enders 2 - Amazingly immersive, fast paced and prefer everything about it over the first one.
Super Mario World - Tough to choose just one Mario game but I've easily sunk the most hours into this one.
Vanquish - Took me a while to warm up to, but when the game gets going it's just so intense and impressive.
Metal Slugs - The pinnacle of tough run'n'gunning, plus lots of character.
Boulderdash - Played the C64 version for months, such a good mix of puzzle solving and reflexes.
Doom II - The perfect escapist non-realistic FPS, so visceral and fun.
Quake - Groundbreaking, amazing atmosphere and pacing.
Ray Series (Rayforce/RayStorm/RayCrisis) - Stylish, beautiful visuals, lovely music.
Darius Series - Stands out with its unique art direction, massive scale of the display, quirky music.
Thunder Force Series - My first ever 1CCs.
Street Fighter Zero 3 - I'm truly crap at fighting games so I'm no expert, but for me this one just has everything going for it.
King of Fighters Series - Amazing to watch the experts play. Love the characters and graphics.
Sin & Punishment - Most impressive game on the N64. Treasure at the top of their game. Oh I do love rail shooters!
Silhouette Mirage - Lovely graphics, unique vibe, gets very chaotic at times.
Manic Miner - Sunk so many hours into this on my ZX Spectrum when I was a kid, probably the first game I ever got 'addicted' to.
Early Llamasoft games - Sheep In Space, Ancipital, AMC, RMC, Batalyx, Iridis Alpha... obviously often based on other game ideas but stand out with wacky sensibilities and always immensely fun.
Dropzone - The best Defender clone IMHO - adds just enough variation.
Bayonetta - Was a little suspicious at first, but very quickly got drawn in to this over the top crazy world, haven't played the sequel yet as I have no Wii U. :(
Ms. Pac-Man - Simplest controls ever and such a tough demanding fun game, always keeps you coming back.

Oh, nice thread and lists (and that one from OP too!)
It's always hard to choose. I tried recently, though.

Of course it will be changed in the future, because i have pretty big backlog...and i'm not including stgs here.

PC

Anachronox - space odyssey rpg/adventure, full of funny jokes, curious characters and different worlds to explore. Has it's flaws and kinda unfinished but still felt in love with it.

Binary Domain - tps from Team Yakuza, and so what? Well, it's awesome - in game process, in overall presentation, in storytelling with social background. Though, starts a bit slow and "generic", but gets better quickly.

Clive Barker's Jericho - sure, you can't jump here. Sure, sniper girl is overpowered. Sure, it's cheesy. But, whatever. I like it. Gorgeous enemy design and overal gore aesthetics (sure..), some interesting places and pretty ok gimmick with "play as team of differently specialised units".
And yes, i played Undying too and it's gorgeous, but that's another story.

Cryostasis: the Sleep of Reason - interesting first person shooter/survival from ukrainian developer Action Forms. Besides some silent hill'alike monsters, time travelling thing (a bit similar to Ghost Trick in it's idea) and cold as hell atmosphere, it has really soulful plot about how one people's ambitions and cowardness costs others their lifes.

Daikatana - yes i said it. Dai-ka-ta-na. I'm still "wtf?!" that people continue to spread lies about how it's "worst game in the world" or smth (unless they mean stupid N64 release based on beta). In reality, it's very decent fps that was trying to do different things too early and for some reasons it's also was late. The only real problems DK have is several bugs and stupid AI of "companions", which in addition to ULTRAHYPE it had before release made people really HATE it. Well, maybe because i played it for the first time only ~7 years after release, i liked it. It has good level design and by that i mean structure of levels, not decorations. It has awesome weapons, different for each of 4 episodes. It has oustanding soundtrack, dammit. Some nice challenge, though some areas could be too generous for medkits. And it's multiplayer is damn fun (mostly because of mumbo jumbo with weapons). Atm, there is fan-made patch that fixes most frustration moments (though there 've always been a fix for stupid partners - play it in co-op, lan/web. Or even solo, you loose cutscenes but get rid of companions). Also, some multiplayer servers supported by little community of fans.

Dark Souls - love it for fencing. Also, gorgeous level design (overall): i mean, all those interconnections and "hey, i've seen that chapel from streets below and now i'm here". And, of course, feelings which you get after successfully defeating someone.

Deadly Premonition - "Twin Peaks: The Game", some could say. For me, it was more about ridiculous characters =)

Half-Life: Opposing Force - imho, most atmospheric of series. Also love that Race X and crazy weapons.

KISS: Psycho Circus - Nightmare Child - i'm not a fan of that band, but liked game pretty much. Monsters, levels, weapons, everything is cool.

The Last Express - oh, wait, point & click adventure! But story is pretty good and it really captured a feel of train voyage.

Pac-Man Championship Edition DX Plus - who needs medicaments anymore?

Pathologic - crossgenre survival game from russian studio Ice-Pick Lodge. Very unique thing, you can read about it at hg101 or rps to get some picture.

Populous: the Beginning - very fun god sim/RTS. Landscape terramorphing, tornados and volcanos and everything else.

Quake - still love it's pacing and art direction.

Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines - for me, it's the only true inheritor of Deus Ex 1.

Zeno Clash 1/2 - first person brawler/shooter from chilean developers. Interesting artstyle and world.

Genesis (+CD)

Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure - my fav platformer. Has nice variety of levels/zones.

Vay - nice jRPG with humour and, wow, fixed inn prices. Ha.

SNES:

Chrono Trigger - one of first games that managed to make me play it through the whole night.

Demon's Crest - was totally impressed even though played it for the first time only in 2012 or smth.

PS1:

Baroque - harsh dungeon crawler (+roguelike elements) with surreal monsters and creepy atmosphere.

GeGeGe no Kitarou (2003) - pretty cool Ghouls'n'Goblins-style sidescroller based on classic manga.

Parasite Eve 1 - horror-jRPG with epic sense of total apocalypse and wonderful soundtrack.

Persona 2 Innocent Sin - oh, in old times Persona series wasn't about waifus..it combined references to occultism, psychology, japanese social traditions and many other things. Though, those random encounters are really exhausting.

Final Fantasy Tactics - loved it for gameplay, but didn't expect nice plot as an addition.

Rising Zan: the Samurai Gunman - wow, wow, wow, what a game! pre-DMC slash action with God Hand's jokes and atmosphere. Camera is uncomfortable, but overall it's nice pack of fun.

Armored Core & Armored Core: Master of Arena - rapidly controlled mechas X trippy electronica ost = win. Gonna prepare for pain in ps2's Last Raven.

Dreamcast:

D2 - bizzarre horror action-adventure from Kenji Eno, with cheesy scenes and absolutely beautiful music.

Maken X - my fav game from Megaten-related subfamily. Has arcadey gameplay and cool designs from Kaneko. PS2 port has some cool bonuses but i woudn't recommend that one.

PS2:

Bully - why not) It's hilarious

Devil May Cry 3 - only played it this winter, dunno why i didn't do that earlier. Marvelous!

Shadow of Memories - heartwarming adventure game with some cool twists and time travel.

Killer 7 - oh, man. It's like Guy Ritchie's "Revolver" movie. Mind = blown

Shadow Tower Abyss - maybe, most interesting game from From Software (you could remember them for King's Field, Armored Core, Echo Night, Demon's Souls, Otogi etc.). It's dungeon crawler that could be viewed as step between KF and Souls series. Love it for atmosphere, strange mix of themes (aliens, mutants, wizards etc.) And you can cut limbs of enemies so they change their moveset. Also, had guns before Bloodborne! A bit too easy, though (unlike ps1's Shadow Tower).

Shinobi - i know many people hated it, but whatever. I love it's temp. This game got the rhythm.

Silent Hill series - LOVE THEM. I think i gonna like Forbidden Siren (especially 2nd one) too.

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution - i just like it, maybe i'll afford Naomi version supergun one day, who knows.

Nintendo DS:

Flower, Sun and Rain - surreal adventure, port from PS2 (that version has better gfx/audio but japanese-only). For me, it has one of the best plot/characters in games ever, but it's pain to play and you need to know what happened in it's prequel to get the whole picture (The Silver Case on PS1).

Shantae Risky's Revenge - cool and colourgul platformers with multiplanes gimmick. Nyah!

The World Ends With You - i think it captured concept of loneliness in socium w/people interactions better than recent Persona games.

PSP:

Hammerin' Hero - lovely sidescroller from Irem. You're a man with a hammer (...or something else. A big tasty fish, for example), who helps citizens against evil corporation.

Lumines - it's especially good at 4 a.m.

Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast - one of racing arcades where i do feel the speed. Awesome vgm, too.

Pix'n Love Rush (Minis) - love this retro-inspired platformer from french devs. Pretty high replaybility for me.

Prinny: Can I Really Be a Hero? - "Dark Souls of PSP" :P

iOS

Rimelands: Hammer of Thor - basic, but charming turned-based rpg

Chaos Rings series - jRPG from Media.Vision. Loved them, but 'm angry at coming CR3 which looks BAD.

Groove Coaster Zero - rhythm game from Taito. Awe-so-me music (imho), Rez-style visuals.

Nihilumbra - platfotmer where different colour paint gives different properties.

Swordigo - looks like some shareware from 2000s but plays well.

1-bit Ninja - for me it's best "Mario clone" ever. Too bad it's not ported anywhere else.

:?:

Ok, that's all for this time, hope i'll come back in the future with post about arcade titles one day (ports, MAME or even find a cab in my city, haha)

Yes! I love Binary Domain. It's slower paced than Vanquish but has a similar classic gaming feel, especially the boss fights. And it has a French robot.

Anachronox, Daikatana, Psycho Circus, and Jericho in front of Undying...hmm, interesting choice! All pretty good games, I have to admit that after the so-so reviews Jericho fell off my radar entirely.

I feel it's kind of a shame that there wasn't more development in that kind of world you see in KISS and Undying, and Daikatana to some degree - Tomb Raider 3 sort of does it a little, and Shadow Man does it quite a bit more, but both are really limited games of their eras in some respects. I did like that quasi-hub thing going on in Undying lots, though; not a lot of games have the smarts to pull that off these days.

If you haven't tried it already, you might look at Counter-Strike Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes. This was probably my true favorite PC game for a while (fun level design + attitude from a legendary PC development team added a lot here, even though the mechanics were just ported forward from an online game). It's very strict with the shooting, though, and certainly the gameplay design is very different from Quake and even the other semi-realistic FPSes seen here.

I thought of putting Binary Domain in my list, but I bumped it off for Lost Planet, which is just a little better imo. Binary Domain is pretty great, though. The robot enemies make combat a little more interesting than a standard TPS because you can shoot their head or limbs off to change their behavior. And it gets bonus points for having a good narrative and cast of characters. Too bad it bombed, I would've loved a sequel.

Binary Domain is sooo underrated. It's just big dumb fun. The boss fight when your in the truck and a huge motorcycle robot is chasing you is way cool.

It's not a phenomenal game, but it is pretty damn good. Way underrated.

The only real issue with it, is the voice recognition, which does not work. This is somewhat rectified by being able to answer, via buttons...but not so much when they are asking you stuff, in the heat of battle. It's a pain. Lots of repeated phrases too.

But other than that, it's really underrated. And I mean by it's lack of...well, nobody seems to know it exists. It's MetaCritic is pretty accurate. 75 percent, is a good score for it, I think.

Resident Evil 4
Ikaruga
Final Fantasy Tactics
Super Mario World 2
Chrono Trigger
Gunstar Heroes
Sonic 3 and Knuckles

And many others....but these kind of come to mind, right off the bat.
