Any good shoot em ups on PS3?

Post by Floob »

Hi,

I've recently got a fightstick / arcade stick for the PS3 and have been playing SF4.
Can anyone recommend any good shoot em ups for this platform?

Seems as though the Cave games are on the Xbox360.

Thanks.

Mamoru-kun Curse isn't too bad (or expensive) if you're looking for something a bit different; there are also a handful of PS1 and PS2 shmups up for download, such as Zanac X Zanac, Gaia Seed, and Gradius V.

EDIT: Ah, you're from the UK, the stuff I mentioned is on the US PSN, not sure if it's on yours...

Pickings are scarce, but they're good.

Especially Under Defeat HD. That game's an essential.

PS3 version is messed up isn't it? At least the original arcade mode.

As this is about £10 on eBay I'll definitely give it a go. Thanks!
Have also ordered Ketsui, so those 2 should keep me busy.

PS3 is just dire for shmups to be honest, but Ketsui will keep you busy if you wanna 1CC it!

Raiden IV Overkill is pretty fun too and at least it's a PS3 exclusive mode. The leaderboards are there for the taking...

You can jump through some hoops to get a Japanese PSN account, which will let you bag some old skool classics like Donpachi and Dodonpachi and yes obviously there’s the new Gradius V emulation from PS2, but apparently all the old PS1 and PS2 emulations have small but unavoidable input lag.

As I said, it’s a dire console for shmups.

Has your stick got a Sanwa JLF in it?

it's only messed up in that it has some very tiny changes from the arcade/dc versions which you will only notice if you have played those versions for score pretty extensively.

No Way! I could get Dodonpachi on it?! Thats almost tempting enough to muck about and setup a JPN account.
Although I'm thinking I should try and sort a decent arcade cabinet soon and do most of it that way, I'm pretty comfortable with MAME and more than happy with HLSL to get it all looking a bit retro.
Just need to find a custom maker, and sort my designs!

My two sticks are a TE and SE Street Fighter 4 from Madcatz:

I think the TE has some sanwa components.

You can quite easily set up a JP account and get the PS1 ports of Donpachi and Dodonpachi on your PS3.
You can also get G-Darius and Enheinder this way.

Now consider the almost bad conversion of the arcade to PS1, the upscaling from PS1 to PS3, the almost impossibility to tate your big TV, and the input lag, and you'll get a DDP experience which will not be as good as it should.

A bit off-topic, but Amazon.com let's you purchase xbox/PSN points - not points cards, mind you - instantly generating a redemption code, instead of mailing you a physical card.

Is it possible to buy Japanese points, without having to buy a Japanese card?

Other games that come to mind, granted some of these are ports that can be played in emulators, check forums to see people thoughts on the quality of emulation and/or special features. Not sure what's available in UK, so sorry if it's not!

- Resogun (cross-buy with PS4/PS3/Vita)
- Soldner-X and Soldner X-2
- 1942: Joint Strike
- Alpha Mission
- Alpha Mission 2
- The Capcom Arcade Cabinet has a couple of shmups in there as well. 1942, 1943, Legendary Wings, Sidearms. Nice collection if you're into capcom classic games (nothing that can't be done through MAME, but hey, it's on the PS3).
- Namco Museum also: Galaga, Xevious
- Space Invaders Infinity Gene
- Gundemonium Collection (Includes Gundemonium Recollection, GundeadliGne, and Hitogata Happa)
- R-Type Dimensions
- Acceleration of Suguri X

There's a few dual-stick games also if that's your cup of tea
- Geometry Wars 3
- Ultratron
- Project Root

Edit: scrub mistake on Acceleration of Suguri X

I use this site all the time to buy US and JPN PSN Credit. They charge a small fee but it's easily the most convenient way to get out of region credit that I've found. - http://www.pcgamesupply.com/buygames/so ... an-Region/

But yeah, as mentioned, there is a few of PS1 and PS2 shooters throughout the 3 regions. Creating a US or JPN PSN account is really easy and takes about 10 mins so I highly recommend it.

Outside of those then I recommend the 4 games the first reply mentioned.

$39.99 for a ¥3000 card? ¥3000 actually equals to less than $25, so you spend about 60% more than it is worth.

Not true. iirc Kiken and Kobayashi and some others extensively reported on the arcade mode issues in the UD HD thread.

PS3 suffers from increased and erratic slowdown that doesn't at all match the Naomi original, enemies firing from outside the play area (can confirm by seeing the missile lock engage before enemies appear), sound lag causing the bomb deploy chime to be out of snyc.
Kobayashi wrote:I own the PS3 version, but unfortunately, after playing a lot and watching many videos I verified that this version has a ridiculous amount of slowdowns as the video below (made by me) shows quite clearly (as for example from 03:06)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-2PZ1eOi48

From what I could observe in Youtube's videos, the Xbox 360 version has much less slowdows, so I think it's the best HD version of this game.
Afaik the version quality is DC > 360 > PS3, but it's a close thing between the latter two. DC is still far and away the most accurate for arcade.

If we're talking New Order of course all this is irrelevant.

Kobayashi wrote:
AntiFritz wrote:It's a shmup? Or do you mean inaccurate slowdown?
Put another way, the game suffers from abnormal slowness when the action on the screen increases. I saw videos of the Dreamcast version and in this version the problem is minimized. In the Xbox 360 version, from what I could see, the problem is also smaller too.
The last patch attempted to knead the problems a bit, but not all:

Kiken wrote:Some odd instances of enemies being able to fire from off-screen have been fixed, but many still do this.
The bullet pattern density in some parts has been reduced to match the DC/NAOMI version better, but others areas remain unchanged from how HD Arcade was.
Slowdown still feels really awkward though.

Any other differences between the NAOMI/DC rev and the HD version are still in effect.

Well I feel like a dummy! Fixed the list! One of the games I've been meaning to play, too much stuff out there nowadays! If I played, I'd know better....

Just tried Under Defeat as per the recommendations. Lovely little game thanks, I like it has an Arcade mode, and the forced aspect ratio gives a good arcade feel it also works really well with the arcade stick.
Although have to say, even on my 46" TV the viewable area seems small due to the aspect ratio - I'll just have to sit closer!

Was surprised to see some slowdown when the screen was busy - but still a very enjoyable game.

Is PS3's Ketsui any good? I mean I can play it with MAME and all kind of filters. Does the PS3 version offer any improvements in graphics, for instance?

It's good if you don't own it already. No visual enhancements IIRC.

It does have an additional mode with a different scoring system, in case you weren't aware of that.

Ketsui's remastered soundtrack sounds way better on PS3 than MAME.

Ketsui arrived earlier this week. Love it.
Good to get an arcade port like this - works well with the arcade joysticks.

Shame its 1 player though.

Plays really well though I thought, no slowdown. Good to see Cave on the PS3.

hmm, clearly it is a 2 player game according to the reviews. Odd it doesnt seem to want to give me the option.
I'll go kick my arcade sticks.
