Rail Shooters

Post by Gamer707b »

Hello everyone. My apologies if this is in the wrong place, but I wanted to talk about rail shooters. I hear a lot about the 'traditional' shmups here , but never rail shooting games. I just started a playthrough of Sin and Punishment 2 for the WII on hard mode. Amazing game. Not an easy game at all, especially for you shmup experts on this site. Surprised I don't hear about it as much. Also I grew playing Space Harrier as well .I would love to get the Saturn version, since I only have the Master System game atm. Also what do you guys think of the Panzer Dragoon games. This is just for some casual fun discussion.

None of those games you just mentioned are rail shooters. Rail shooters are games like House of the Dead and Rez, where you literally have no control over movement.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

They are still on rails, just hybridized with crosshair shooters.

Sin & Punishment 2 is my favorite game of all time, but sadly it's still abit under appreciated. Give it another 5 years or so & people will look at it with the same sense of awe & respect as the first two Panzer Dragoon titles.

My favorite home conversion of Space Harrier is the 32x version. Check out Galaxy Force as well. Not as fast, but still incredible. I've really got to get on that New 3DSXL so I can get the 3D versions.

No, they're not rail shooters, MathU is correct. Those are all cross-hair shooters or some variant there-of.

Something like Sin and Punishment is more of a hybrid, but for simplicity sake , Ill chalk it up to rail shooting. Something like Panzer Dragoon is more a Rail Shooter more so than Sin and Punishment. Remember guys this is meant to be a fun discussion , not so much nit picky.

But we've already had the discussion, as linked above. Rail Shooters are Rail Shooters, not shmups, hence the discussion was had in Off Topic.

There is a distinction between Crosshair Shooters (Operation Wolf) and Rail Shooters (S&P).

For 8BA, S&P2 is generally considered remarkable - personally I think it's absolutely incredible. If it was just slightly more brief it would be just about perfect.

The moderate amount of criticism I've seen it met with almost always seems to come from those who dislike the Wii for it's controls or are just altogether biased. This is always ignoring the fact that you can use more traditional controllers if you want. I personally would never play it without the Wiimote + Nunchuck, which makes it unlike any other gameplay experience I've ever had.

I was glad to hear they've recently released it for the WiiU, but I'm hoping for a total remaster at some point. It's too great of a game to be lost with time so soon.

As far as S&P 2 goes ,it is too long for a arcade game. I personally think of it as a arcade game that was modified for a home console. On one hand I agree with those saying its too long as an arcade style game. On the other hand its hard for me to complain about more shooting goodness. Wii wasn't myfavorite console by far , but that didn't stop this from being an amazing game for me.What happened to Treasure btw?? Wasn't this their last original game?? not counting their re-releases .

The most visually satisfying rail shooter is Ace Combat Assault Horizon
