Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continues?
Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continues?
I have Mushihimesama Futari 1.5, ESPGaluda II, Deathsmiles and they all have unlimited continues, are any of the other Cave games on consoles without infinite continues?
Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
Try score attack?

It's funny how everyone always makes the argument "you can't give them no continues or else people will cry that it's too hard, and you can't give them unlimited continues because then they'll say it's too easy"
But I can't really remember very many games on consoles (or anywhere, really) that had no continues since the 16 bit days (and even there it was rare).

None of them have unlimited continues if you aren't scrubbing it up.

Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
In the MD/SNES days it was pretty common for games to only have limited continues. But yeah, at the end it all comes down to self control and wanting to 1CC something.Squire Grooktook wrote:But I can't really remember very many games on consoles (or anywhere, really) that had no continues since the 16 bit days (and even there it was rare).

Don't use any continues?
Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
Ketsui doesn't have unlimited continues. I don't see why it's a problem though, just don't credit mash.

Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
That wasn't ported by Cave though but by a different company. Even then that's the unlock more credits until you do have free play thing.
Just play Futari, ESPGaluda II, Pink Sweets, Muchi Muchi Pork, Deathsmiles II, or Guwange on their Score Attack modes where you're not allowed to continue. I don't remember if Akai Katana's Score Attack allows you to continue.
Deathsmiles(first one) allows continues in its score attack mode, takes the highest scoring credit of the run and not just the first, but shows how many continues the player had used up to the credit where they scored highest, shaming the credit feeders.

DoDonPachi DaiOuJou Black Label EXTRA awards you one more credit for every 30 minutes of gameplay, or something like that.
Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
Metal Slug 3 on OG Xbox gives you zero continues. None ever, no matter how long you play.Squire Grooktook wrote:But I can't really remember very many games on consoles (or anywhere, really) that had no continues since the 16 bit days (and even there it was rare).
For a brief moment, SNK Playmore had more balls than probably any other developer that's ever ported arcade games to console.

Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
Indeed and I just played some of it right after making this topic, but is it really Cave though? On Xbox Live 5pb is listed as the developer and when you start the game it says "5pb Games Division #2" after that it says "Cave", thats the game that had to have more work done on it for 3 more years after its release to release a patch to fix all the bugs and glitches (game came out in Q1 2008 and the patch came out in Q1 2011, they stopped production of this game in 2008).DestroyTheCore wrote:DoDonPachi DaiOuJou Black Label EXTRA awards you one more credit for every 30 minutes of gameplay, or something like that.
http://5pb.jp/games/div2/
I am sure its that Cave made the original game in 2002 and 5pb games divisions #2 made the port in 2008, thats what it is right?
Having 1 or 2 continues is fine, having unlimited continues isnt (at least for me), this isnt the arcades, in the arcades you can have as much continue as long as you have the money to pay for it, so in the end you will run out of continues, but it isnt the case on consoles. I want something like Philosoma, Einhander, Gradius V, Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga either fixed limited continues or the more you play the more you unlock continues.Squire Grooktook wrote:It's funny how everyone always makes the argument "you can't give them no continues or else people will cry that it's too hard, and you can't give them unlimited continues because then they'll say it's too easy"

Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
It does have continues, but unlike the original game and the related PS2 port, they boot you back to the start of the current mission. To be honest, I think it should've just limited the player to a couple credits... Mission 5's willfully absurd duration was never meant for Contra-style stage restarts.Pretas wrote:Metal Slug 3 on OG Xbox gives you zero continues. None ever, no matter how long you play.
It's a catch-22. I do think a small, time unlocked amount of credits is the best compromise, but for the majority of consumers arcade games will always be caught between "WAHHH TOO HARD" and "lmao i beet it in 20mins."

But real talk, does your controller have some strange symptom where it automatically hits continue when you run out of lives? I'd get it fixed if I were you.chempop wrote:Try score attack?

You're not asked in this thread whether OP can control himself or not. You're asked about Cave console ports without unlimited continues. But real talk, does your controller have some strange symptom where it automatically hits continue when you run out of lives? I'd get it fixed if I were you.

Not sure but isnt there no continues in the 2nd loop of white label DDP DOJ? Or is that just at the TLB?

The score counter represents completion/mastery, and it always gets reset on continue.
If you reach the ending with 50% of the score from continuing midway through, the game has only recognized a 50% completion rate.
1cc or you didn't beat the game.

Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
It's no continues at all in loop 2 of DOJ WL, and you can't get into loop 2 unless you clear the first with no continues and some other condition.
DOJ BL only disables continues on 2-5.

Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
It is so cool that you mention this.. That MS3 port was so good because you had to bust your ass to see later levels of the game. I remember getting all the way to the end and not clearing it. I enjoyed it more than any other MS game because of no credit feed. Didn't it have like 2 or 3 continues though? I can't remember and I haven't played that port for at least a decade.Pretas wrote:Metal Slug 3 on OG Xbox gives you zero continues. Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
For added realism you could take a sealed jar with a slit in the top and put a coin in it every time you use a continue. But make sure to look over your shoulder and be all "I got this" when the imaginary spectator gives you a very disapproving look.
As Chempop said... try score attack. It's limited to 1 credit and is how I played Mushihimesama Futari since.. ever!

Don't know for the Cave games, but either one or another, Shmups are meant to be 1cc'ed even if they're impossible.
Some become impossible after you lose a life so... 1cc for the win!
No credits needed

Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
All of them I assume, and arcade-style games in general?
To me continues are akin to using cheat codes, they're fine for practicing or dicking around, but you haven't truly beaten the game if you're using them and no game should be designed around the assumption that they're to be used.

Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
These games are all ports of the arcades, these games are designed and devloped with the arcades buisness model first and foremost, if everyone just put a coin and stopped after that because of x reasons, they wouldnt make any money. They are made to be used with continues this is how the arcade buisness makes its revenue, the limitation comes with the amount of coins you put in and the problem is that this cant be applied when ported to consoles, this why I prefer STGs that were developed for the consoles and not arcades, because they get the continues right.Shepardus wrote:All of them I assume, and arcade-style games in general?

Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
Unless, you know, the game were good enough that people would actually want to play it more than once even without continues. I think it's disingenuous to suggest that the existence of continues in arcade games means that that's how you're supposed to play the game, especially considering that many lock you out of the second loop and/or TLB if you use a continue. When you continue you're essentially paying to circumvent the normal intended mechanics of the game.Lawfer wrote:These games are all ports of the arcades, these games are designed and devloped with the arcades buisness model first and foremost, if everyone just put a coin and stopped after that because of x reasons, they wouldnt make any money.
Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
As I recall, the extra modes on the PS2 versions have no continues. PS2 Mushihimesama's arrange, PS2 Daioujou's Death Label.

Re: Any Cave console ports that dont have unlimited continue
You might as well say that Contra was "meant" to be played with the Konami Code, since Konami decided little kids who can't dodge shit should be able to see the end too. You might as well say beating the game on easy or novice mode is the same as well.Lawfer wrote:These games are all ports of the arcades, these games are designed and devloped with the arcades buisness model first and foremost, if everyone just put a coin and stopped after that because of x reasons, they wouldnt make any money. These games were made to be played as skillfully as possible. That's why there's no unavoidable attacks. If you continue, it's your fault for not mastering the game. And mastering the game is the goal.
Hell, the score counter doesn't even acknowledge you beat the game at all. You continued at the last boss? Sorry but your completion rate is a big fat zero, sucka ^_~
