Greetings!

Post by J-Manic »

What's up shmuppers! I'm new to the forum, and just wanted to say hey. :)

I'm not new to the genre though. I've been shmupping ever since the great console war (SNES vs Genesis) of the early 90's, but didn't get seriously into it until I bought a Saturn and my first shmup, Layer Section, which I STILL haven't been able to beat. Then shortly after I bought Donpachi and that's pretty much what got me hooked on manic shmups.

I've actually been coming to this site for info on various shmups for over a year now. And I just decided to join this forum to be able to coverse with other shmuppers, since there are none in my area. I look forward to sharing my thoughts and opinions with you guys.

Welcome to the forum! Layer Section and Donpachi are also among my favorite shooters from that era. Layer Section on the Saturn was a huge boost to home shmupping at the time. I still remember how blown away I was by that when I imported it on its release. These days we take the ability to play great shmups like that for granted ;)

Yup. I agree 100% with what you're saying man. And that's why I treat all of the shmups in my collection as treaures, because that's what they are. I feel lucky to be able to enjoy them whenever I want.

Welcome to the forums. Good choices with DonPachi, and Layer Section. Two kick ass games. Layer Section looks great in tate mode on Saturn. :)

That's a no brainer. Tate mode is a must with every vert shmup, if it has the option to do so. It's just plain common sense.

I meant that Layer Section in specific is missing special effects in "Saturn mode", which appear in "Arcade mode" (tate).

Welcome to the forum, & I'll second (or third) the choices of Layer Section & DonPachi. Layer Section was the 2nd Saturn shmup I bought (Darius Gaiden has the dubious honor of being 1st), & it remains a favorite to this day. DonPachi is a much more recent purchase, but it's quite addicting.

Hi J-Manic!

Welcome to the boards!

Layer Section was probably most people's first Saturn shooter, and it was no different for me. To this day I think it's one of the greatest shooters ever made.

Donpachi is pretty cool, although I think it really has been surpassed in every way by Dodonpachi (and taken ad absurdum by Dodonpachi Daioujou). Also the voice commentary in Donpachi is a little too cheezy for my taste. :D

So what are some of your favorite Shooters?

Yeah, Layer Section is a real bitch. I've been playing it for over 2 years and still can't get through that last level. It's fun though.

Somehow I'm getting mental images of 2 huge galleons at sea, firing cannonballs (or maybe cream pies or water balloons) at each other: one flies the flag of the Pirate Kitty, the other the emblem of the Twitching Salamander.

They'd better be water balloons filled with pie.
Feedback will set you free.
