Dimension Drive

Post by Stilghar »

Hi guys,

New video showcasing the current status of the game

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiPAZJAHv7M

Dimension Drive is a comic book-styled space adventure set in a multidimensional universe. It features a unique teleportation mechanic that allows you to fight on two battlefields at once, and gameplay combining frantic shooting, defense and fast puzzling action. We'll need YOUR help to make Dimension Drive the high-quality release you deserve, and bring this unique mix of genres, storytelling and action to reality.
Image
The Ashajuls, a cruel multidimensional alien race, are attacking our universe. Fight as Jackelyne Tywood (a.k.a. Jack) in The Manticore, a legendary ship capable of teleporting across space and dimensions. Uncover the mysteries of your past and the origin of the Dimension Drives with your trusty friend and A.I., "V.E.R.A.", at your side.
Image
- A New Type of Shoot?Em Up: Dimension Drive is a Dual-Battlefield vertical Shoot?Em Up with a focus on smart, quick teleporting.

- Rich Sci-fi Adventure: Unfold the secrets of the Dimension Drives and your past, teleport across the multiverse fighting the ultimate threat, and meet new races and allies!

- Clever Mix of Three Mechanics: A seamless combination of levels focusing on strategic shooting, fast puzzling and frantic defense make the core of Dimension Drive an exciting and varied one.

- 2 Wars at Once: Multitask and teleport to single-handedly fight in two shoot'em up levels at the same time.

- 4 Game Modes: Arcade, Modern, Pacifism and 1 Credit Clear all force you to approach the game in different ways and add replay value!

- Comic Book Style: Experience the story of Jack Tywood through gorgeous, dynamic motion comics fitting the cel-shaded style and visual "pop" of the main game. In Dimension Drive, video games meet comics. Who said space was just black?

- Energy Management: The Manticore is powered by Dimension Drive energy. Carefully decide when and where to teleport while in the midst of combat.

- Advanced Scoring System: Shoot'em up fans and genre newcomers alike will enjoy our unique scoring system that rewards you for playing truly well, rather than simply shooting enemies.

- Teleportation!: We've said that already, right? It's what makes our game really unique! No? Okay then--Teleportation!

That's a creative way to deal with the problem of making a vertical-aspect game that doesn't have a ton of unused space in 16:9. Trying to track what's happening on both screens reminds me of playing Double mode in a rhythm game or something.

It seems like you have some interesting ideas here. I'll keep an eye on this!

1 CC: With only one life and no save games, 1 Credit Clear contains the highest stakes imaginable. Complete the game in a single session without getting hit once (unlocked after beating Arcade).
I think that this difficulty name is very misleading..

Shouldn't the arcade mode have score extends along with the starting lives? Not necessary, but something worth thinking about because it gives motivation to score even for survival play.

EDIT:
Ok I gotta be honest.
Something tells me that the design of the game isn't very well thought out, if power-ups & abilities and stuff is dependent on budget.

The concept isn't quite as unique as advertised. The NDS/PC action-platformer Fractured Soul also has switching between dual fields of play as its central mechanic. It's not a shmup, but the basic idea is the same.

Doesn't mean Dimension Drive can't be good, of course. I'm a bit worried about having separate level types (though there is the "while mixing elements of the others" disclaimer), but we'll see how it goes.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Looks like it could be fun.

As far as double playfield goes, there is Excellent Bifurcation, which is from 2007.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the nice words and the questions! Hope you guys can back us and spread the word.

We got to know about Fractured Soul and Excellent Bifurcation in these forums some time ago, somebody told us about them :D Checking them up while they have a dual playing field with some sort of switching we believe the type of gameplay is different from what we are doing here. For example in Excellent Bifurcation you had two ships and Fractured Soul was more a platformer with some shooting stages if we are not mistaken. Besides that we have the whole concept of the dual energy that makes this gameplay different. Also, none of both games went for the kind of story driven comicbook game we are targeting to do.
Coming to three types of levels it doesn't mean that they'll be completely separate. It just means that one of the mechanics is more prominent than the others.

@cagar:
We've been here since the beginning so feedback is appreciated and we'll try to improve the game during the rest of the development with it, we'll see what we can do regarding the 1CC mode (if you can, please elaborate a bit more on what you would like to see and we check that out).

Regarding the stretch goal you mention I gotta thank you, it's obviously extremely misleading and probably damaging our campaign at the moment we'll add a clarification on the FAQ and try to update the image soon. The game design has been carefully thought and the game we plan to do with our goal is feature complete. Having said that, we have already thought about some other ideas for the extra weapons, abilities and enemies that we'll put in extra levels if we reach that stretch goal. That's the missing part there, we'll do extra levels with those.

Generally speaking, most arcade game 1CCs don't force you to beat the game without getting hit once (that'd be a "1LC," or "one-life clear"). The average arcade shooter will start you out with 3 lives, often with the ability to earn a couple more via score targets ("score extends") or hidden placement in the stages ("fixed extends").

Oh, yeah, I agree. But you can do that in Dimension Drive in the regular arcade mode and try to complete the game with the 3 starting lives plus "fixed extends". For the 1CC we wanted to go for something even harder so only 1 hit. I think the problem is we picked a wrong name for it then  In any case, just updated our Kickstarter page an changed it to 1LC, thanks for that. If you guys see any other issue let me know please.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you know that yesterday a twitch streamer played an early build of the game (only 2 levels, very easy ones), but should give you an idea of how the game looks in motion. Hope you like it. :)

Thanks Keres for sharing the link. He'll probably stream again on Wednesday 29th. I'll let you know.

Kintinue also streamed it yersterday night.

We're announcing the streams as much in advance as we can (sometimes we get last minute tweets telling us about them). The best way to keep up if you are interested is to follow us on twitter.

I guess our minds think alike :) Actually in our devlog post n0rtygames also mentioned that he thought about doing something with 2 screens. It's strange that not much has been done considering that most screens are wide nowadays. We thought about this after seeing some videos of a guy in an arcade playing split screen co-op all by himself. We tried that first, two ships totally independent at the same time. It was too crazy XD

From Software went all out there with Kuri Kuri Mix/The Adventures of Cookie & Cream, but it's a 3D platformer.

By the way, even if you are not able to back our Kickstarter please give us feedback if you play the demo. It would be helpful for us to improve the final game.

Thanks for spotting that! :D We did the interview some days ago and almost missed it.

We are really struggling to make this Kickstarter work guys, if you have any ideas that could give us more visibility we would appreciate them. We believe reaching the Japanese players could help us get there but we don't even know where to start.
