Is it any good for gaming? Doesn't it induce any extra input lag?

Shouldn't be any lag. Both are digital signals. Biggest difference is HDMI also carries audio, DVI is video only. So there should be no lag because no conversion is necessary.

Wikipedia told me something along those lines and the lead ("reductor") I saw in store doesn't look like much of a converter, but neither does the VGA adapter bundled with my graphics card I'm using now, so better safe than sorry (I gather HDMI is digital, whereas VGA - analogue).

HDMI = digital
VGA = analogue
DVI-I = can carry digital or analogue
DVI-D = digital
DVI-A = analogue

The DVI <-> HDMI cables will only work if your source outputs a digital signal. So, you can't go from VGA to DVI to HDMI by chaining adapters.

The card sports only two DVI sockets and one... whatever it's called (carries S-Video and composite), so the VGA adapter was needed to render it useful with old monitors.

Another way to put it is that DVI-D and HDMI are the same thing (minus audio). DVI-I has a few extra pins that carry a VGA signal, you just need the adapter to allow you to plug in a VGA cable. DVI-I was created so video cards wouldn't need both a VGA and DVI port.

A DVI to HDMI adapter looks just like a DVI to VGA adapter, it's a tiny little passive plug.
