I have a PS2 that is a fat model that is also a test unit. Basically just a PS2 with no region lockout.
It's starting to have the classic reads DVDs but has a hard time with CDs issue. I'd like to have it worked on and i'm located in the USA. Anyone have any recommendations?

Test PS2 repair
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Re: Test PS2 repair
this is just an issue with the laser starting to go bad. you can tweak the voltage pot on the laser assembly, and that will fix the issue, but ultimately speed up the demise of the laser. laser assemblies for the ps2 can be had pretty cheaply though nowadays, and the replacement is really pretty easy. i'm sure you can probably find a youtube guide on disassembling the ps2, tweaking the laser pot, and replacing the laser if need be. if you can turn a screwdriver, you should be able to handle this yourselfStrider77 wrote:I have a PS2 that is a fat model that is also a test unit. Couldn't he also just find a PS2 made around the same time and swap lasers?

google "ps2 replacement laser". no need to sack a console just for a laser. there are different lasers for different models, but most people selling these will list what the different lasers are compatible with model-wise, so even that part is easy.BazookaBen wrote:Couldn't he also just find a PS2 made around the same time and swap lasers?

Are these simply the laser module or the whole assembly? I'm asking because I was trying to fix the "seeking" arm on my 5000 model and threw off the height of the laser. Could never get it to read double layered DVD's properly again. Just replacing it would probably save me a lot of headache.

Probably not the answer you're looking for but softmodding it with FreeMCboot and throwing in a hard drive for HDLoader will take care all your optical drive issues.
You'll need to mod the BBA for this: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Inch ... ta+adapter

I've already done all that, except I'm using an 80GB IDE drive. But sometimes I'll buy a new PS2 game and I just want to throw it in and play. Also, you can't put PS1 games on the hard drive.SGGG2 wrote:Probably not the answer you're looking for but softmodding it with FreeMCboot and throwing in a hard drive for HDLoader will take care all your optical drive issues.![]()
And actually HDLoader is yesterday's news. And by yesterday, I mean 2007. Open PS2 Loader has been the standard program for a while now. Way more features, and better compatibility.

Ya, that's what I meant. Haven't used my PS2 for some time now. Also, the PSIO guys said they think can probably get the SD loader running on PS2 eventually.

I tried swapping out the laser from working unit but had the same issue. Thought that was really odd.

FreeMCBoot doesn't work with debug hardware.SGGG2 wrote:Probably not the answer you're looking for but softmodding it with FreeMCboot and throwing in a hard drive for HDLoader will take care all your optical drive issues.![]()

OP did you make sure that the lasers were the same revision? I believe they have to be for them to work without any modification to software.
