New Rainbow Islands (DS) help?

Post by PaCrappa »

I've just received the JP version of New Rainbow Islands as a Christmas gift from the mighty yet magnanimous Paleface, and am having trouble. There is no in-game tutorial and I can't make heads or tails outta this dang Chinese they got printed all over the manual. So far it seems as though one just guides Bubby or Bobby (who now float inside of a bubble) around whilst making small rainbows which kill enemies and gathering the fruit etc. Thing is, I see on the box and in the manual great big rainbows and one even in the shape of a pentagram. There is some "over" meter that I definitely don't understand as well. Can anyone give me a clue?

Thank you in advance,

Sounds kinda like Kirby DS, or Yoshi Touch & Go. In both of those games you draw paths to guide the character on screen and use paths to defeat enemies in some fashion. The "over" meter might show you how much rainbow you can draw - when the meter's empty, you can't draw anymore.

Nah. I have Kirby and this isn't so much like it. NRI does have a rainbow meter and that does control how much rainbow you can draw at once but I understand that. I have no idea what the "Over" meter does and I'm getting seriously cained here before I even meet the end of the first island. Is there a boss? I couldn't tell ya. I can't make it past stage three thus far.

Thanks for trying though.

Damn, I forgot to order this. How's it stack up to Bubble Bobble DS (which is pretty lame, I must say).?

So far it's confusing and frustrating. I'd imagine diehard fans of the old one would be pissed. We'll see how it goes as I figure it out.

You can always scan/photo some pages and post them. That might help.

I am no diehard fan, but I am a big fan of the original Rainbow Islands.

And just hearing about this new game, I am already pissed.

heh :D

From what I read a gamefaqs, you guide the player character with the stylus or d-pad and draw different shaped rainbows to attack enemies. It looks like there are special triangle and circle rainbows that use up part of the meter. The "star thing" rainbow is a special rainbow that only takes effect when some meter is full (probably the "over" meter).

To be honest, I was far less pissed at the discription given at gamefaqs of the game than the one here. I'm actually interested in giving this game a try, though I'll be more likely to do it if it goes on sale at play-asia for 14.90 like Mawashite Koron (a Taito DS game based on Cameltry) did.

Thanks BrianC. What the crap though... I looked at gamefaqs' "New Rainbow Islands" message board last night and nothing was there.

Oh well, I understand what I need to understand now.

BTW, gameplaywise it is pretty much nothing like the old Rainbow Islands. It is fun though. I ceased being frustrated a few hours ago, even though I still didn't know what the over bar did and had no idea about the special rainbows. Now that I know it should be even more fun.
