Anyway to connect Original Xbox to extron rgb 203?

Post by Laughingman.s9 »

I've tapped out every possible connection in my setup, the back of my tv is a jungle gym, I have zero space for another component switchbox or another wall socket to power it. Interfacing with the free VGA ports on my extron is my only hope.

Yeah, but you have to have "Sync on Green" enabled on the Extron.

Really? I had no idea the original Xbox outputted Sync on Green.

As far as I know, you need the "Frozen" VGA cable and a special BIOS on a modded Xbox to output VGA.

Sorry, you have to set the Extron to Sync on Green so it will work with component. I've never VGA modded an Xbox.

So it can be done? How do I get them to interface?

Well let's think about it, what sort of plug is at the end of the Xbox Component cable?

Do you use some sort of component transcoder? Reason I ask is because I think he wants to know how to connect component into the "VGA" input on the RGB 203.

Extron RGB's work with component in SoG mode.

If I'm reading the Extron RGB Interfaces and component input topic correctly then that hookup will deliver YPbPr, not RGB on the 203 rxi output so whatever is hooked up to it better support YPbPr.

There was a Neoya X2VGA (and X2VGA+) component to RGB transcoder which was powered by the console. One might pop up on ebay but it might be pricy the way the prices for the official Xbox High Definition AV pack have been going lately. And there is still the issue of games that only support 480i - so whatever is hooked up to the 203 rxi better support 480i. The Xbox system menu can be forced to progressive but that does not affect 480i-only games. To run all games in 480p the console needs to be (soft)modded.

I already have my extron rgb outputting to a VGA to component adapter (audio authority 9a60a)

In input 1 I have an xrgb 3 going into it and the other 2 inputs free.

I don't want to feed my Xbox into my xrgb which technically would be the most painless route but I have my Xbox modded and outputting in 720p via component. There's far too much noise on any signals coming in at 480p through the d terminal inputs on the xrgb 3, everything comes in super bright and washed out

That's why ideally I'd like to run my Xbox through component into some kind of interface that can facilitate connection to the extron 203, not sure what the extron will do with this signal at this point but from there it would all go through the audio authority 9a60 VGA to component adapter and connect finally to my tv.

Is this at all possible is what I'm asking

Failing that, does anyone know of any non powered, passive component switchboxes that won't degrade the signal (I know it probably doesn't exist)

Xbox is ready to connect the Extron RGB already, since the Extron can pass component signal when you have SoG enabled. The only problem would be when it goes through the 9a60 later, because it's already a YPbPr signal. So you'd have to disconnect the Extron from the 9A60 when using the Xbox, and just have your Extron going directly to your TV.

And are you sure you want to be forcing all your Xbox games to 720p? 99% of Xbox games are internally rendered at 480p, and it's probably just using nearest-neighbor scaling to do 720p, which will give you some ugly pixels.

oh my bad, i didnt mean to imply i force all native xbox titles into 720p, i meant since its modded, i play alot of pre 32 bit era games emulated on my xbox and scale them at 720p or possibly 1080p, its been so long i dont even remember

anyway so how would i go about connecting the xbox then? do i need a custom cable?

Well, your extron doesn't have RCA inputs so I would imagine so.

Well, I told you earlier that the Extron takes YPbPr signals, so the only thing you need to do is get that signal into the input on the Extron.

It's not going to work as the 203 rxi is feeding a 9A60 which is expecting a RGB signal - not a YPbPr signal. The 203 rxi isn't the problem - the 9A60 after it is. So
  • the 9A60 would have to be manually removed
  • and a BNC (or DE-15) to RCA cable would be needed to connect to the component switch
in order for the Xbox to display correctly.

It makes far more sense to disconnect the component cable from the 9A60 and use 3 RCA couplers to connect the Xbox component cable to that component cable going to the switchbox - on the odd occasion that the Xbox is in use (and leave the 203 rxi entirely out of it).
