Google Video for replays?
Google Video for replays?
As an experiment , I tried encoding some of our work videos to use on google video. I was really impressed with the speed at which it streams (I'm in the UK, and I'm used to streaming movie trailers, which come from the US, being really choppy and generally not working).
Thought it might make a good place to upload shmup replay videos - it's completely free to use, you just need to get the video in the right format. Anyone think this is a good idea?
Incidentally, if anyone wants me to encode and upload anything for them, PM me with the link and I'd be happy to sort it out.

yeah, I heard that. I think the reason it works so well, is that I spsuecpt google are cacheing everything by region- so they need to set up enormous server caches in each country (maybe?).
Bit of a shame they are locking people out by geoip, but hopefully it will come in time.
Still, German shmuppers aside (sorry!), is it a good idea? Loads of people seem to be short on bandwidth and have trouble keeping up shmup sites, so this might help aleviate the problem.

Yeah, if someone knows, or has one I can download, I'll try it out.Nullsleep wrote:I think its quite a nice option. Wouldn't mind seeing some replays pop up on there
I'm sure it's coming to the rest of Europe. Funny that we have it in the UK - usually we get the same deal as Europe (including being the last ones to get our hands on games...)
Still, I suppose it is a beta, so we can't really complain about it not being available everywhere yet.
This is slightly OT but some guy from shmup.com is sharing a collection of videos (many shmups, but not only) :

The more downloaders, the better.

Any idea who is it is? If I can get their permission, I'll try encoding some of them for Google vids.fl0w wrote:This is slightly OT but some guy from shmup.com is sharing a collection of videos (many shmups, but not only)
Incidentally, someone from Germany mentioned the google video problem in a thread on our forums and a workaround for it if it's not available in your country:

although I'm guessing it doesn't work as well the further you get from the source.
Here's the original thread:Fost wrote:Any idea who is it is? If I can get their permission, I'll try encoding some of them for Google vids.fl0w wrote:This is slightly OT but some guy from shmup.com is sharing a collection of videos (many shmups, but not only)

I think HyRuy will be happy to help you if you send him a pm.

It works fine (I'm in France and I've done the translation trick with http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... &q=ikaruga)Fost wrote:Incidentally, someone from Germany mentioned the google video problem in a thread on our forums and a workaround for it if it's not available in your country:

BUT
- I can't save the video

- The quality is awful, is it a problem with google video or the original video ??

No, but you shouldn't need to - that used to annoy me in the past, but now it pops up so fast and is never jerky - the main reason I've been impressed.fl0w wrote:- I can't save the video(or can I ?)
I've seen much better on gvids, but I think it may be changing the video size depending on your connection. I'm not entirely sure what the deal is and am still experimenting. I uploaded a 640X480 video:fl0w wrote:- The quality is awful, is it a problem with google video or the original video ??
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... war+angels
and it streams off at 320X240. I'm thinking they should be uploaded with as little compression as possible, because I think they get recompressed afterwards. I'm going to try re-uploading that one with less compression to see what it does.
In any case - should be a nice way to share replay vids.
