Dodonpachi DOJ plastic model kit by Kotobukiya Feb 2015

Post by greg »

 WANT.
Kotobukiya, the company that has brought us model kits from games such as Ikaruga, Layer Section, and Virtual On, will be releasing a kit of the Type-A ship from DDP:DOJ!
Image

Kotobukiya's website.
Tag Hobby has many pictures.

This was posted on the Starship Modeler forum I'm on, and I figured I should share it with everyone here. There was some very limited edition DDP models I once saw at the Kotobukiya store in Akihabara a year or so ago, but I don't know if they were polystyrene injected plastic model kits or if they were resin garage kits.

Neither Amazon Japan nor Yodobashi have this kit for preorder yet. However, Hobby Search has it listed, as does Amiami. It looks like Amiami has the best price for this. I'll search around for some other places, but I do like Amiami, so I may preorder through them. HOLY CRAP!

That's really cool. I think rancor had a model of Type A and B for sale at one point. It'd be interesting to see a side by side comparison.

Sexy. I thought people recently had problems with Amiami with the cave collection or no? Just asking, don't want to bother making an account and preordering if they're somewhat unreliable.

Am I reading that right that amiami have it for just under 5000 yen? I don't think I can live without this, thanks for the heads up greg.

I'll have to head to the model stores tomorrow to enquire about costs for a professional paint job.

It was NinNin. Amiami didn't offer the collection as far as I know. Amiami has always been pretty good about pre-orders.

I've been waiting for a neat kit for a while. Another thing to irritate my wife as it hangs around the house.

Purchased them from him late last year, great kits they are.
The upcoming Kotobukiya version looks way different compared to the earlier release from RC Berg:
http://www.rc-berg.co.jp/products/galle ... chia2.html

By the looks of it, Kotobukiya's one is based on the art on ship select screen and the PS2 cover art:
http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/221755- ... lDeath.jpg
http://www.cave.co.jp/gameonline/daiouj ... _black.jpg

RC Berg's version was based on the in-game sprite and game artworks:

http://www.game-ost.com/static/covers_s ... 625269.jpg

http://www.jeuxvideo24.com/screens/360/ ... abel-x.jpg
http://hiscores.shmup.com/assets/images ... abel-x.jpg

From appearance, personally I prefer RC Berg's version; it feels more faithful, looks more solid and less elongated and curvy.

Yes, it's a great buy, considering the list price for this is 6,800 on Kotobukiya's website. Only 500 yen domestic shipping within Japan!

Dirt cheap. I'll ship it to my friend and then have him send it over to China. Should be peanuts in transport. But... I went to the game centre today to take pictures and completely forgot to stop in at the model stores on the floor below

If I can't find a building/painting service there's not much point in me going for it - I don't have the skill or time to do it justice.

Ideally I'd also like a small figurine of SHOTIA on her knees in a cock stroking position, but that ain't gonna happen.

Spoiler
Those are some good observations, I also thought the same thing, thats why i'm getting both!

Also, the difference between the models reminded me of the differences between how the 80s Civics look in comparison to the 90s Civics in terms of boxiness and smoothness. I know, its a stretch.

Sorry for the double post, but I'll post this so that you can see this. Skykid, Kotobukiya models come molded in different colored plastic. You'd be surprised how nice just the molded plastic colors will look when you just give it a coat of matt clear spray. It suddenly doesn't look like colored plastic and instead looks more like a paint job.

Cool, that's good to know. If I'm going to invest in one, especially at such a reasonable price, I'd still like to have someone with skills make it look dashing. I'm sure such a service exists here, although I'm thinking about forgoing the clean look in the images and having it a little dirtied and bullet grazed if possible. I think battle worn would be a cool look.

Well, I could build one for you. You could pay me whatever you were thinking to commission someone to do it. If you're looking for something worn and battle damaged, here's the Galaga starfighter I finished earlier this year to give you an idea of what I can make it look like. PM me if you're interested. You could have it shipped to me directly and then I can mail it to you when it's done.

Hey thanks for the kind offer. Genuinely I'm not sure I'd feel right quoting you the equivalent of what it can be done here for locally. China is a lot more expensive than it was several years ago, but some things are still comparatively very cheap.

Anyway, let's not get ahead of things, I'll drop into the model stores when I have a chance and see what.they're saying. ;)

Heads up, fellow pre-orderers. I received a message today from Amiami telling me that this kit has been postponed until April.

I pre-ordered too, and looking forward to getting this next week.

Those pictures look amazing, so I must ask, did this person further paint and detail the model, or is this a straight build? Also, the last time I put together a plastic model was in the 80s, so what am I in for? I just remember lots of glue getting everywhere.

He only painted it with grey matte, no metallic color. However he didn't mention whether he glued or not.

What? People in China are getting this kit before I do? No fair! I live in Japan, even.

I'm glad to see the picture of this ship next to that smart phone. I was concerned about the scale of this kit, since it's 1/144. It's also nice to see it in relation to the other shmup ships by Kotobukiya.

Ah, you are probably talking about Testors citrusy-smelling glue that makes all those lovely spider web strings that ruin models. The smell sure is nostalgic for me, but I favor Tamiya glue nowadays. Don't worry though; these kits come in pre-colored plastic and are snap kits. Gluing is optional.
