It seems to be in good shape except the eject button wont pop the tray open when i have the top cover on the sega cd. If i take the cover off first the lid will open fine.
my question is, is there supposed to be a spring underneath the eject button? it seems like the plastic piece thats attached to the eject button isnt hitting the piece under it when the top is on.
Update: i found a service manual and i can see that there isnt a spring there. so what could be causing the lid to stick?
Update 2: I opened the lid and stuck a cd in there because i wanted to see if the rest of this system works - and surprise - with the cd in the drive the eject button opens the lid fine when it press it. Take the cd out and it wont open.
Im 90% sure if i raise the cd laser up a bit this problem is solved. Im going to get some nylon washers today and that should solve the problem.
Update 3: PROBLEM SOLVED.
the laser was sitting kinda low because the original rubber washers are a bit squashed. So i got some small o rings and put them on the pegs to raise it up. Cd door still wouldnt open correctly so i took the o rings back out.
Took out the plastic catch for the cd lid, shaved a hair off of it, then i adjusted the spring on the back of the cd door to give it more tension.
This drive lid is now working like brand new.
All i need now is a fuse (already ordered) and i should have a working sega cd providing theres no other problems with it.
Update 4: so - the cd would work when i had the lid off and the switch bypassed. But when i put the cover back on the sega cd it would just say press start and go to the bios screen.
Turns out that the lid itself is supposed to have a spinning plastic piece at the top that goes on top of the magnet. Mine is missing and this was causing the cd to not spin at all when the lid was down.
so i took all that junk out of the lid, and the sega cd now works flawlessly with the cover on and the lid down like its supposed to.
the only downside is that i have to physically place the magnet on top of the cd when i want to play a game.
I have an idea for that though. I wonder if i can take one of those spindles with the 3 ball bearings on it out of a portable cd player and use that to hold the cd down like a saturn does. Anyone know if one will fit?
