Anyone have it yet? Impressions?

Why would you need to unlock the original, it even comes on its own disc with the first print run. Is number 2 an unlockable maybe?
Anyway, the apparently arcade-perfect original seems to be the main reason for many to get this. Haven't read much about the new game, although I'm a bit worried about the GT-esque approach: why drive for 10 races when you drive for 300? Why 3 laps when you can have 30? Why 2 minutes when you can have 24 hours? I hope they didn't go overboard with the career mode, 200 tracks already sounds like the "gazillion variations on a theme" instead of "5 perfectly designed killer tracks" thing. I'll know for sure when it gets here, I'm enough of a Sega Rally fan to blind buy and pray

regarding the original Sega Rally that comes with Sega Rally 2006:
1.) it is not unlockable because it comes on its own disc
2.) it is the Model 2 arcade version, not the Saturn version. there is no Saturn version coming with Sega Rally 2006.
3.) we don't know how 'perfectly' the PS2 port of original Sega Rally runs right now because there are no impressions of it other than blurry video clips on the internet. the PS2 port of Virtua Fighter 2 was not 100% identical to the Model 2 arcade, the textures were very much downgraded. Sega Rally arcade used a slightly updated version of Model 2 that was newer than the one used in VF2.

They bring out OUT RUN 2006 coast to coast for ps2/pc/psp...read the news from sega>>>>http://www.sega-europe.com/en/NewsStory/926.htmThe n00b wrote:Oh Sega, how could you let this happen? Impressions?
No actual hands-on impressions of this yet? Bingo, did you get yours? I'd like to order this while the first print is still around, but it's hard to have blind faith in Sega lately...

Got mine a couple of days ago. Played Sega Rally 2006 quick arcade race or whatever it's called. Personally, I like it very much. The graphics aren't anything special but very solid. Someone over at gamefaqs said that DC's Sega Rally 2 has better graphics than 2006. I would halfway agree texture wise (2 seems to have more colorful and vibrant textures) but 2006 has a higher polygon count and is at a solid 60fps which counts for a lot. Don't know if it supports progressive scan (forgot to hold X and Triangle at start) but it didn't look very sharp like most non prog-scan PS2 games.
As for gameplay, to me, it has that classic Sega Rally feel. Light, fast, simple, arcadey. And thanks to the 60 fps frame rate, it's much smoother in feel than Sega Rally 2, naturally. As a long time Sega Rally fan, I'm sold on the gameplay!
Career mode is a little complicated so far. I'm self taught katana, but I'm a little lost with 2006's career mode options (lots of hiragana and kanji it seems).
As for the original, it seems to the a perfect port. I notice that the transparencies on the windshields/windows were cleaned up and not screeney. It has 3 different screen size settings. When I put it on full screen mode, things looked skinny like the Saturn version. In fact, there was a point where I was convinced that it was really just the Saturn version running at 60 fps. But no. It's the arcade, and very well done. Perhaps there are differences in this port, but besides the transparencies, I didn't notice any. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
But going back to thinking it was Sega Rally Saturn, that hit me how great of a conversion it is. Even though it ran at half the frame rate, it still felt just like the arcade version...maybe a little heavier. But I have to say, with the extra car and extra practice mode for the Lakeside course and the valuable replay option (which the arcade version is sorely missing), Saturn Sega Rally is still the definitive version.
Admittedly, I spent a hell of a lot more time with the original than 2006. But I'm definitely happy to have my 2 copies and I recommend this package to Sega Rally fans. Hardcore super nitpicky fans may find something to bitch and complain about, but that goes the same way with every video game series.

Indeed, the Saturn Sega Rally rocks.GateofThunderforceIII wrote:But going back to thinking it was Sega Rally Saturn, that hit me how great of a conversion it is. Even though it ran at half the frame rate, it still felt just like the arcade version...
No magazine mentioned that the Saturn Sega Rally runs much smoother than the PS Ridge Racer.
I even suspect that the PAL version of Sega Rally also runs at 30 FPS.
Normally one would expect a PAL version to run at 50 or 25 FPS, but I suspect SEGA said to themselves: "let's do something for Europe". and they did. It is fullscreen, opposed to RR, which has the usual PAL letterbox.
I am alone in the suspicion of the PAL version running 30 FPS.
Somebody can check with an emu?
Anyway great review you just gave.
Any PAL plans?
Any probability of a 60 HZ option? Probably not eh?
Yours trully,
Sega Saturn Fan
Oh yeah I modded my Saturn to run 60 FPS, so If the PAL version runs at 30 FPS, In my case it runs at 60/50*30=36 FPS........
..........NOT VERIFIED YET.......
And the screen is too big, perhaps can be rescaled on a bigscreen TV.
I think you're right on D. The PAL SR was supposed to have been genuinely PAL-ized. Meaning original speed at 50Hz and faster than that at 60Hz. IIRC we tried that way back when and that's how it was. Hyper-PAL
.
EDIT: Sheesh, I forgot my manners. Thank you GoT for your impressions, and not just because they make me feel more at ease. As long as the original is a great adaptation and the new one retains the right feel and framerate I'm happy. How are the courses on the new one? They claim there's over 200 and I'm afraid it's quantity over quality...

What? Dude, nobody had even posted any impressions about it here when you said that. The n00b wrote:Oh Sega, how could you let this happen? After seeing Sega's almost overbearing protection and care with the Outrun franchise, I can't believe they let Sega Rally flop like this.
On the PAL Sat version: I dunno about the frame rate, but it was definitely a more complete game than the US version. They spent the extra time granted to them by the later release date putting more options in - extra stuff in the tuning options and ghost car modes for TTs - and gave the graphics an extra level of polish. That huge mountain on one of the bends of the second stage was missing from the US game, but got included in the PAL one, for example.
My copy of 2006 just arrived today, but I've not got the chipped PS2 here to play it. Poop.

Just got done playing more of the quick arcade races. They're really just the old Sega Rally style mode where you make your way to the top on one lap races spanning four courses. At first you have three series available, then unlock a new one for each series successfully finished. Finishing a series is very tough...for me at least. And the fourth series is completely based on the four original courses from the first game complete with super cheesy remakes of the music. The original courses are actually done pretty damn nice and have a very organic look (lots of green and trees). This series is actually kicking my ass and I'm taking a break from it. Really damn fine and fun game. I won't be touching career mode until I'm done with Killer 7 for the Cube (another fantastic game with my favorite videogame line: "YOU'RE FUCKED!!!!!!!"). So far the courses are pretty good.
There are a couple of graphics quirks that I want to point out: 1) There are quite a few pop ups going on. Nothing super major, but noticable. This doesn't bother me. 2) The driver inside the car is animated and not rendered. He has three animation "frames": not turning, left turn, right turn. Looks a little funny during the replays.
I personally don't think that Sega has completely lost it. I've quite enjoyed many of their post DC games released on other consoles: all three GBA Sonics (like them better than Sonic Rush), Panzer Dragoon Orta, the godly Shinobi, Kunoichi, Outrun 2, the ruler of all fighting games (to include DOA4) Virtua Fighter 4 & Evolution, and now Sega Rally 2006. That's not to say that all Sega fans should or liked the mentioned games, but Sega isn't quite the shadow of its former self like many say.
Oh well, back to 2006 and Killer 7.

I thought the DC version of Sega Rally 2 got it right, with the career mode that was challenging and fun but not RPG-like, and just the right number of cars and courses. Yeah, the port could have been done a lot better, but I still have plenty of fun with that game.

Yep, and for me it was the piss poor conversion of Daytona that helped kill the Saturn in the US and Europe before it had even started. We all know which was the better game, but more importantly - to the average consumer at the time at least - we all know which looked better. Damn you Sega. If Daytona had looked as sweet as Rally eventually did it might have been a different ball game. Oh well.
sounds like sega rally 2006 is falling considerably lower than everyone's expectations =/
is it true that it wont be released until 31/12/06???
hope they make a good pc release.
by the way, you can play pc demo's of sega rally 1+2 at the sega website.
