Some of those pics are from stage parts though. So it isn't exactly like spellcard practice or last word. You even have bombs, which aren't in spellcard practice.

The thread about this on MotK mentions a "flawless mode"

Which may mean there's an option to disable lives and then have to no miss(though the screen shots still have bombs, so you don't have to truly be perfect). I have no idea if it'd be an option only for Practice Mode or for full runs, or if there's some scoring benefit for choosing to not allow yourself to die(though it'd likely be a different category anyway). Or a scoring mechanic where you risk instant game over for a bit for more points(I can't think of any games that do something like that though outside of Hitogata's error mode timeout phases where you wanted to milk the boss in just a way to finish them right before the timeout phase with one exception)? Actually, I guess there's Border Down(Border Red) and Under Defeat(slight bonus for being on last life that most players don't bother with). Oh and Yagawa stuff.


Could be interesting to see how that no lives thing plays though.

Gunnail defines that type of scoring. A multiplier based on how many lives you don't have.

Enjoying the demo. Game is hard and TBH a lot of the stage 3 bosses patterns feel almost ketsui like to me.

Weird ass glitches though such as reisens bomb doing nothing and getting unlimited lives.

So the "Shooting Down" screen pops after every enemy wave, similar to Eschatos. There are several of these per stage.

The first stage is kicking my ass on Luna. Reisen is pretty useful as she can essentially convert a bomb into 3 lives. Her bomb gives you a 3-hit shield. Should've made it more visible though.

Not a fan of the bullet dimming when they come into graze distance yet.

Music is good. Not "holy shit" good but good.

Damn this game's brutal, I wonder how hard the last three stages will be if the first three stages destroy me as much as they did. All the shot types feel too weak to me, which makes it easy to get overrun by enemies in certain parts and makes getting 100% shoot down bonuses really difficult.

There are two modes to this game, "Pointdevice" mode and "Legacy" mode. Legacy mode is the same as always, but Pointdevice mode disables your lives, and if you die you get restarted back at the start of the chapter (not stage, but chapters, which appear several times per stage and after each boss normal attack or spellcard, similar to a checkpoint system). You can retry all you want, you can even quit the game and later continue where you left off, but each time you retry you lose 0.01 power. It's kind of like savestate practicing turned into an actual mode of the game.

I also wanna add that "Pointdevice" is probably the harder mode as you can't be trigger-happy on the bomb button anymore. You don't gain ~free bombs~ upon death so you're going to have to perfect things. Probably with a lower shot power than usual as well if you lose power at the .00 mark.

Yeah, you really should only use bomb in Pointdevice mode if you really can't get past a part, which you can tell by the fact that you're about to lose a power level from all your attempts.

More on mechanics:

• Extends (in Legacy mode) are score-based.
• Chapter bonuses are based on chapter graze and your shoot-down percentage. If your chapter bonus is over 1 million you get a bomb fragment. Chapter bonus also adds some amount to your point item value but I have no idea what determines that.
• You seem to be able to graze bullets multiple times, unlike other Touhou games. Grazing will turn bullets a different color and make them vibrate for a little while until they grant some item that adds 5 to your graze counter. Grazing also slows down the speed at which the items descend down the screen. I think if you get graze fast enough they'll actually start moving upwards. EDIT: Scratch that, the upwards movement is just their natural movement upwards before they start falling.

Overall I like the feel of the game so far except for how weak all the characters feel. I think ZUN wanted to make it hard to get the 100% shoot down but I feel like he overdid it, everybody feels completely powerless even against popcorn.

Sanae is pretty ok as she's wiiiiiide. Reisen isn't as impressive as I thought. Her shot is underwhelming, narrow and the bomb isn't very useful in Lunatic as you need to actually remove shit from the screen instead of tanking hits.

I think the graze bonus item appears if you're grazed a bullet until it's no longer grazeable (follow it for a while until it changes back to normal).

First extend is at 30mil on Lunatic. No idea what happens after that. I'm credit feeding. I think he accidentally put the last 3 stages in the demo.

Marisa's got a straight shot with the power of a wide shot, it's pretty horrendous. Sanae does seem to be the best right now.

I'm pretty sure you can still get graze from bullets even after you've gotten the bonus item from them.
