Today I managed to get my hands on the Jamma board of the first arcade I ever played, back in 1987 - Extermination. I have been checking Ebay every now and then for a few years now and this is only the second time I came across it, and snapped it up before it was gone.
Anyone ever played of this game, or even heard about it? My impression is that it is quite obscure and I don't believe I have ever seen anyone mentioning it on a forum.
Lucky you! Didn't go terribly cheap either. I was looking for it myself at one time. I'd like to find it a bit cheaper, but I don't know about differences between region releases, if any, so your World-type release might be interesting.
I like the power system - it's considerably different than the usual three-hits system, but still very workable. It's not the same as zooming about in frantic search of points, but the constant need for energy gives it the same kind of frantic gameplay.
Never heard of this game, but I can see why it didn't catch on. I'm surprised it seems to completely disallow continues aside from 2P join-in; continually decreasing life energy is usually the telltale mark of a deliberate quarter muncher. Though there are exceptions, like 1943/Kai and Out Zone.

Well, to be fair you can bump the energy bar up again by collecting the flame thingies left behind when an enemy is hit.
i think it's better to assume that extermination is not a deliberate quarter muncher, because that's actually kinda rare and largely restricted to western developers (or certain western releases of games)

Yeah. But also the fact is that by design the game doesn't let you continue. My guess, is the game wants you to complete it by actually getting good at it
The only other game I know of with a constantly decreasing health meter that forbids continues is Sega's Galaxy Force II (JP version). Though unlike that game, you can cheat by switching back and forth from the P1 and P2 sides.
It looks kinda neat. One video on youtube shows off that they play can have four options trailing around him - this practically covers the screen. The health doesn't seem to decrease a la 1943 unless you are in water - it looks more like a health bar that you can increase up to 9999. Since every enemy drops health you can probably brute force a couple of tricky spots with the right prep. I dig the boss designs.
