Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
I was just starting to regret not buying a copy back when they were ~$15 (more like $50 now), so this is pretty cool news!

PD: This game literally was free, because was a gift from a group of persons trying to sale it (was $1 is price), and when I was in the moment to pay to it, the boys sayed ''Take it, it's just trash'' and in my mind ''Expensive trash boy, and thanks''

Fully Working, complete, just a really minimal damage in the disc (Really minimal, not affect nothing), and yep, I am happy.
Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
Ultra Mega confirmed, straight from the horse's mouth. Despite the 3 frames of lag of every PS2 classic, I can't wait to play this!

I wasn't aware of this since I've never bought any of the PS2 classics on PSN. That sounds terrible, but I'm not sure how it compares to stuff like the Raizing games or Cave's SDOJ port. And that would be before possible HD related input lag.
Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
Well for someone like me who has been using their ps3 as a shmup machine lately this is pretty neat.

Not sure if this information (2006-Nov) still applies - but in case it does here it goes:Chaos Phoenixma wrote:I wasn't aware of this since I've never bought any of the PS2 classics on PSN. ... Much of that display lag seems to be due to the 480i -> 480p deinterlacing on the PS3. To get around the deinterlacing lag:
- For 480i titles (like Gradius V) connect the PS3 with a component cable and set the resolution to Standard (NTSC:480i) (Caveat: lots of HD sets can be laggy on the analog inputs especially with 480i material).
- For 480p capable titles activate progressive mode (generally hold down the △ and ✖ button on/after the PlayStation 2 logo).
Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
It still lags some.
I tested with DDR for ps1 on a CRT with composite.
That said rhythm games are a worst case. Not sure how much the lag will mattered, i haven't tried a shmup.

Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
I don't notice any lag on PS1 games (played through PS3) when hooked up to make CRT. Obviously an LCD is a whole other story...
Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
Try playing Umjammer Lammy, it's there. You don't really notice it until you go back and play it on a real PS1.
That said, I still play several ps1 shooters in there, the lag isn't so bad as to make them unplayable.

Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
Edit: Ok, I'm glad it's not just me.
Has anyone else noticed imput lag on the PS3 emulation of this? Maybe I'm just too used to playing my Saturn and Genesis on a CRT, but my skills at Gradius V seem especially shitty when playing this on PS3/HDTV.
Props to Konami (even in its current geriatric state) for rereleasing this gem.

Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
Got some US PSN credit and bagged this yesterday. I hadn't played it since getting rid of my PS2 and the death of my BC PS3, I'm no 1CC player on anything bar Ghosts n'Goblins, X'ain D'Sleena, Green Beret and a few other arcade games, so I doubt any frame lag will impact me, but it was fucking great to hear that MSX Salamander homage music again. I had a massive shit eating grin. So, well worth the $10.

Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
I picked it up and honestly don't notice the lag when playing on a CRT... But goddamn, this game is ridiculously hard. Stuck on the stage 2 boss, who seems to go on for 10+ minutes.

Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
When I played PS2 games on my backwards compatible PS3, I had 3 or 4 frames of lag, even playing on a CRT. Not sure if that is the case with emulated PSN releases but I would imagine so.amdiggywhut wrote:I picked it up and honestly don't notice the lag when playing on a CRT... The best way to play Gradius V is on a PS2 in 480p using GS Mode Selector. Ideally on a multisync CRT.
Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
Do you know of a tutorial online for how to do this? That's some sort of soft mod for the PS2?BazookaBen wrote:

Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
I also tried playing it on a backwards compatible PS3 and the lag was too apparent, completely ruined it. Would appreciate it if anyone could weigh in on how the new release plays - I came close to 1CCing this back in the day and would love to return to it, but the wife would never let me hook up a PS2 in our tiny flat.BazookaBen wrote:When I played PS2 games on my backwards compatible PS3, I had 3 or 4 frames of lag, even playing on a CRT. CECHAxx(NTSC 60GB)/CECHBxx(NTSC 20GB) or CECHExx(NTSC 80GB) (i.e. emulated "Emotion Engine" CPU)?BazookaBen wrote:When I played PS2 games on my backwards compatible PS3, I had 3 or 4 frames of lag, even playing on a CRT.
CECHCxx (PAL 60GB) also only had EE emulation.

Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
I can't disclose a certain link due to emulation shenanigans, but simply searching up keywords "gs mode ps2" should pop up to a certain forum with tutorial how to.pegboy wrote:Do you know of a tutorial online for how to do this? That's some sort of soft mod for the PS2?BazookaBen wrote:

Can't believe no one has yet reviewed this here.
I just bought it, $10. I think it might have slightly less lag than the PS2 disc. It feels better to me at least, I did a direct comparison. I have the most BC model, 60gb.
The graphics are sharper than the PS2 disc in 1080p mode via HDMI. I always had to set the system to 480p to get the disc to look as good as a PS2 in 480p mode (softmod or xploder). The PSN just looks great.
And get this: you can use a third party USB controller with this PSN version! Like Saturn clones by SLS. You can only launch the disc version with these, and the game never responds.
Very happy. Someone else please give feedback on the lag reduction. Is it in my head?

Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
I don't have the PSN version, but if the game runs internally at 480p now (instead of 480i for the disc version), then the PSN version is avoiding the deinterlacing in postprocessing - and this would save a frame or two in terms of lag.Very happy. Someone else please give feedback on the lag reduction. Is it in my head?
How you would succeed in getting the disc version to look as good as the PS2 version in 480p is beyond me though.
Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
It looks like a blur filter is being applied with the higher resolution settings for the disc. Like a Wii does with GC games.Fudoh wrote: How you would succeed in getting the disc version to look as good as the PS2 version in 480p is beyond me though.
Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
I know that, but for discs that don't natively support 480p (and GV only does via GSM), the 480i signal is run through an onboard deinterlacer, which never looks as good as native 480p from a PS2. That's why I was wondering...
Re: Gradius V is Coming to PS3
I see. It's quite possible that the disc in a PS3 at 480p does not look as good as the PS2 480p. But a whole lot better than PS3 1080p. I may have just been satisfied and ended my comparison, it was years ago.
It matters not now. The $10 PSN is the way to go for PS3 users. Get it before Sony kills the PSN for the it.
Would still like some more feedback regarding the lag for the new PSN release. Anyone?
