Sorry to high jack this tread but it seems to apply.
what is the best new arcade monitor that can be purchased right now?. I see a few listing on eBay but the seller does not specify the monitor's make and model, only that it is trysinc or cga/ega/vga or only CGA. Thanks in advance for your input.

Re: Cabs that have trisync and VGA as standard?
I like the Tri-sync Makvisions. Ive had one in my cab for almost 10 years now and i havent had 1 problem with it.
Some people dont like the tri-syncs though. they say the scanlines are too thick for some older games or something.
I wouldnt be able to tell the difference because honestly, when i built my cabinet, it had been so long since i had been to an arcade i just thought the tri sync looks great with whatever i play on it.

Re: Cabs that have trisync and VGA as standard?
As someone who's owned 60+ arcade cabs, and had an Atomiswave SD, a Tekken 5 dedicated, and a Super Neo 29 with a Nanao standard res monitor, I have to say I prefer the Nanao.
All of the NEW monitors out there on Ebay and Arcade sites are going to be the WeiYa/Makvision monitors from China. There is no one in the states still making CRT tubes anymore at all. Used monitors of course are an entirely different story, but anything you see new, is 99% guaranteed Chinese.
I will tell you that breaking the neck off your WeiYa Trisync monitor in an Atomiswave Sd cab *BEFORE YOU EVER PLAY A GAME ON IT* is not something I recommend.
I was fortunate to get a WeiYa XVGA monitor replacement *very difficult to do, as the bezels for these are only designed for the flat faced "dynaflat" tube monitors.
The monitor itself looks great, and is excellent with my Naomi netboot. I even used a craftymech SLG, and got excellent results with 60n1's and PC's. Its a solid monitor for whats available now.
That being said, WeiYa/Makvision is known in the arcade industry to be HIGHLY untrustworthy. They die constantly, and most OP's will lcd a game if they can, rather than replacing one of the CRT's. They just dont hold up to the 12 hours a day kind of beating they take on route or location.
I think home use will see considerably less problems with them, and they are still available in the VGA/XVGA version adn the TriSync version. They are expensive though at about 500$ a pop.
The Sanwa monitor that's in Tekken 5 is also "dynaflat" and VGA but has really poor geometry, that i've not been able to correct. Colors and brightness is gorgeous though. Apparently there is a Trisync Sanwa monitor out there that's absolutely amazing, but it came in very expensive games like MarioKart and Time Crisis 3/4.
Hope all of this helps.

so what your saying is that wei-ya, makvision is fine for home use but not if you were going to leave it on 24 hrs a day.
i think that applies to most tvs as well and really shouldnt be a considering factor for most of us because ours will not see use like a game on location will.

After looking at some videos of new net cities, it seems they dont have a VGA cable input like the atomiswaves have.. is my assumption correct? I am just looking for a minimal hassle trisync cab that will run a PC / xbox etc without buying too many extra parts..

@pixelcorps
Not sure about the net cities.
I will let you know that there ARE trisync monitors (including nanao's) that actually dont use a dsub/vga connector for input. They will use their own cables, but will still take signals at 15/24/and 31khz(definition of trisync). That may be the case with Net Cities. If so, you can just splice the cables. Even the atomiswave's were only setup for VGA connection through a sub board, spliced into the main jamma harness. The trisync took standard jamma video input from the harness, or the vga cable input from the sub board, whichever was needed. There are boards that output VGA 31khz through a Jamma connection and not dsub.
You would probably be better served getting into the Arcade Otaku forums, as they deal almost exclusively with candies, and have a very good monitor thread.
@msvfan- Im saying that my makvision, and several others are working fine, and hopefully will continue to do so, but the monitor is known to be untrustworthy, and should probably be considered so. If I was going to purchase one, I would want to know how to work on monitors myself (which I can to a point), or have a VERY good monitor repair store that still handled CRT's within driving distance (which I also do). I would not risk the purchase of one at a 500$ price point without those two things, or at least, having a contact number and a heck of a warranty.

[email protected] is very good and his price is reasonable. if you cant fix it yourself, he does good work and you can just ship your chassis to him without the crt providing you know how to discharge it properly.
i can fix most console issues but monitors, not really. not yet.
I wonder though if makvision has gotten any better/worse over the years since i bought my monitor.
People seem to say that the old wells gardner Crts are kind of legendary for reliability but the new ones arent good.

Blast City with ms-2930(tri-manual), ms-2931(tri-auto), ms-2932(31khz only), ms-2933(tri-auto?) all should be pretty much plug and play with xbox-360 (you’ll need to wire a padhack for controls). You’ll probably want a 001 jamma harness purely for the RCA audio-inputs. Also, the manual sync monitors have an auto-shutoff safety feature which tends to kick in due to the 360’s fairly unstable VGA output, so you’ll likely need a cheap sync-stabilizer to guarantee the picture doesn’t go black (the extron160xi does the trick nicely, available on ebay for $15-20).

Re: Cabs that have trisync and VGA as standard?
@Chempop Yeah. I am going to have to get one of the sync stabilizers, cause the xbox does that on an Autodetect VGA monitor I have, along with a PC. As they switch from boot to OS, the monitors goes to "invalid signal" and takes a few minutes to come back to the screen. THANK YOU so much for the heads up on these.
@mvsfan Thanks for the info about Chad. Will add him to my list of repair people. I have worked on the Wells Gardner k7000 series (very easy to work on and very reliable), and the Electrohome G07 (Also very solid when cleaned up and done properly).
As long as you are careful, and can solder, there is TONS of info on those series monitors. Nanao's are considerably more scarce, and WeiYa/Makvision didnt release their schematics out to the public either, so they are definitely for more advanced hands, beyond monitor troubleshooting 101. (CapKits, collectors, flyback inspection, etc). Also, most all of the new stuff uses lead-free solder, which does not bond as well, and can cause problems.
KLOV has two really good monitor guys "KenLayton" who's on tons of forums and "Ohmerone" who has really good advice concercing newer repair. (warning - he HATES weiya's, and is not shy about it, but he will help)
If that helps anyone else, I am glad to be of service.
