Using "test screen" scans they obtained (which Nintendo is using to get impressions from a media company), IGN confirms you will have to pay (as of now) at least $2.99 for every NES game you want with the Revolution "virtual console" service. Looks mostly like a ton of games I already own which I won't be RE-purchasing. Sorry, Nintendo.
SNES and N64 games will be higher, N64 titles will be at least $19.99 a piece. There is a benefit though, look below (paying just $19.99 for S&P instead of getting gouged on ebay sure would be nice as long as the emulation is of course perfect):
The most interesting part of this questionnaire -- aside from possible prices -- is that Zanthus also included a list of preliminary software that is likely to be made available on Revolution's "virtual console" system early on. We've featured the list, which boasts everything from the original Metroid to the never-released-in-the-states Sin & Punishment for Nintendo 64. Check it out. If, after reading it, you're still not excited, you've got much more self control than we do.

I'd rather buy a port. Like the N64 Zeldas on the Cube.
Is it permanent, or monthly or what? I mean, do they think this is what, I-tunes? Can't wait for someone to crack that service so you can load your roms on their emulator.
Then again, Nintendo would be hurting for money...
Then again their stupid Nintendo Infomercial program and their crappy magazine buried Sega in Mexico...
Let the cracking begin. And the pillaging, raping and burning. Yarr.
Is Nintendo that thick-headed to think that people will actually pay $20 for games that are almost a decade old? I can't even see people paying $3 for NES games.

I bet people will. I wouldn't, but I think lots of people would gladly pay that.
Thats a complete joke, many killer RPGs missing fromm those lists, wouldn't pay more than $5 for anything there.
Emulation of SNES on PC is a much more practical alternative. Nintendo can only gain from this service not make a loss, couldn;t be that hard to host these titles for download online. That being said though, maybe this is the future we'll be able to download saturn games..... the horror the horror.
Because that's all it is. A rumour. None of this is confirmed. How about waiting until there's an official announcement before pronouncing the Rev's download service as dead in the water? You might also want to bear in mind that, even once an official list has been revealed, Nintendo will undoubtedly be making more titles available over time in order to keep people interested in the service.

Talk to the people who bought the $20 NES re-releases on GBA.
Gouged on eBay? S&P is like $20-35 there. Absolutely no reason not to be playing the best rail-shooter ever conceived.
Thats kind of stupid... I mean, ok, Sin & Punishment, yay! Everything else? Why the hell do the ROMs cost more than a used copy? I mean seriously, why don't I just drag my NES/SNES/N64 up here to college and play the same damn games. And are they going to add more games later? Because despite so many classics, thats a wack ass list. And how about a hardrive? Does the Rev have one? How do I keep my game I paid $20 for? On a memory card per game I buy? Are they going to sell me a disc?
I guess what Nintendo is doing is a little retarded....after all, teh ROMZORS can be found on the internet for free....and with the proper tools and adapters, you can convert any game pad for PC use.
But you know what's really retarded? Metroid Zero Mission for GBA has the original Metroid as a bonus for completing the game, yet there's also a $20 Classic NES cart as well! For $10 more, you can get that and an awesome remake to boot! Why someone would buy the NES Classic verison instead of Zero Mission is beyond me.
im pretty dissapointed. the only NES games i still really like to play on that list are ice hockey and Punch-Out.
it's pretty ridiculous to think what they're charging when you can practically find the actual cartridges of those games for the same price. I got balloon fight for $2.99. I even got crash n' the boys street challenge for that price and that game ROCKS.
I can understand that mainly games developed by Nintendo themselves appear on the list, but seriously, why can't the other developers jump in for a percentage of the profit and allow the release of other games? To follow up on what someone said earlier, where the hell are my classic SNES RPGs? Come on, Nintendo, give the CEO of SquareEnix a backrub or something so we can get Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana on the Revolution!
Specineff: Once you purchase the game it is stored in the internal memory or your memory card for god, you own it. Otherwise it is a monthly rate rental service.

lol Good deal on S&P aside, "IGN's frothing demand for gamers getting ripped off ocntinues!"

You'd be surprised at how many people nostalgically go on about their old NES or SNES games but are seriously too lazy to dig the system out of storage for another spin. So, I am sure plenty will embrace this for the dubious "convenience" factor and also because many mainstreamers are now conditioned to think "downloading" = "desirable" thanks to all the ITunes hype.
Unless more third party games I never got around to and previously un-localized games show up, not I.

re: S&P - haven't been interested in this game for 5 years. I'm sure the only people who are have it.
The thing about gaming journalists getting EXTRMELY excited over complete nothings is vomit inducing. Shut these guys up.
GOOD NEWS, GUYS, A FEW NES GAMES + $20 N64 GAMES INCLUDING SOME OLD RAIL SHOOTAR.
Who hasn't played every N64 game they wanted. What's been the hold up, aside from the few imports (I suppose). The only NES game I'd pay $3 for is Simon's Quest.
I herd Sega was interested in the "virtual console" of the Rev. Maybe we could see some Genesis games on the Rev. Then again, I could get all the games I want on the Genesis. I got this from a article from Nintendo of America's Vice President, or something like that.

Lighten up, seriously. I happen not to own S&P (and a few other purported gems like Alien Soldier) and if I can pay a lot less for it = positive no matter how you cut it. What do I care if you are not interested in the game if I can get a good deal on it? All I'm saying. And if this means they bring over other games they neglected like Custom Robo (or howza 'bout Dezaemon 64? i can dream) or all the Mother games, then more power to them. Otherwise, yes, the list is bare bones as of now and IGn = 'net hosers. (feelin' a McKenzie moment here)
Don't take it seriously and no one will have to lighten up. It's commentary on game news and its sites. You don't have to type a paragraph to explain yourself because I don't care.

Ah, my bad. Thought you were referring to my words on S&P. Whatever.
I have to agree with Rob on this one. Nintendo is nuts.
as far as I'm concerned, the N64 has the worst library of games around. I'd pay $20 on the Atari 2600 Demon Attack before I'd pay $20 for Mario 64.
That's just me
to me, the NES is next to useless without mega man. And the original Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior has so much nostalgia in me that I hate to not see them on the list.
It's just dumb. I thought that the Rev would be like "buy any Rev game any get 5 free downloads!" or something. that's even better than this crap they're (supposedly) pulling. hopefully when the thing comes out they'll have a better deal going on. As of now, i'm nowhere near impressed.
Specineff wrote:I'd rather buy a port. Like the N64 Zeldas on the Cube.
?!? What exactly do you think all of the Zeldas on the Cube's Zelda collection and the free disc which came with WW are? Why do you think they warn of sound crackling on Majora's Mask?
They _are_ the N64 and N64DD versions running in an Emu.
Although they did some tweaking of the control gfx for the N64 pad iirc.

Yea, that's what I was thinking too. Maybe every Revolution console could come packed with your choice of 5 free games as an incentive. They could be giving away old games just for the hell of it to NP subscribers or people who register their games online. Anything to keep the masses happy. Nintendo is the only company who has this option of having a giant back catalog of games for mass usage. They need to capitalize on that advantage.
Yeah, giving occasional free game downloads could really show how much they appreciate their fans and people who have been loyal to nintendo for so long.
You people will bitch about anything, I swear to god.
"Game companies don't make their old games available so I'm forced to resort to emulation! I wish they'd just let us buy them instead of taking them off the shelves after a few years."
*company releases a bunch of their old games for purchase*
"Why should I have to pay for these?! They're old!"
circuitface wrote:Well now we know how concerned they were about stopping emulation. Big leap Nin, big leap - and this is coming from a Nintendo lover.
Nintendo wasn't concerned about emulation, they were concerned about people illegally downloading roms. They don't give a shit about people playing homebrew GBA games in emus or whatever.
animefanjr wrote:If they do charge I hope it is reasonable. In general I think they are, other times they have had a brainfart, IE the classic GBA series.
.....I still bought Castlevaina though
I still bought a few of them, though I don't know what NoA was thinking with the same price point (though most online sites sell them a bit higher) as the Japanese version and inferior packaging. I got them for the games, not the price point. Also, I got the majority of them on sale. I did get a couple of the Japanese Famicom Minis at full price, but those have better packaging and I picked games not available in the US.
I'm a bit disappointed that NoA decided to sell Dr. Mario/Puzzle League at the same price as a regular GBA game in the US. YesAsia actually has Japanese the game for less than the US version. That is just insane. Nintendo needs to learn how to sell Japanese budget games as US budget prices.

If by brainfart you mean brilliance then I agree. Those came out at $20 each as bare bones ports because they all sold extremely well. If they didn't, there probably wouldn't even be a download old games service on the Revolution. Hell customers still come into game stores today specifically asking for the GBA Super Mario Bros. or original Legend of Zelda Classic NES releases. Like eight to ten people a day, and this happens at most stores in this region, it's crazy.
Nintendo doesn't need to sell things like that or the Tetris/Dr. Mario pack for any less because people buy them anyway.
The only brainfart on the Classic NES series is that they didn't do a third line for the US, as those would have continued to sell well.
