Raiden Project Japanese versions question

Post by nZero »

I just wanted a bit of input on this, from anyone who owns the Playstation Best version of Raiden Project, as it and the PAL version are the only one's I haven't tried/don't own. I might do a full comparison chart later depending on what info I can get.

The original Japanese release of Raiden Project (SLPS-00013) fails to load in emulators, including the Playstation 2. Works fine in a modchipped Playstation. I assume some sort of disc protection or lack thereof is involved, as the PS2 claims the disc is a Playstation 2 disc. This is verified with 2 copies.

I'm aware that Playstation Best versions appeared with different catalog numbers in 1996 and 1999. Are either or both of the re-release versions compatible with the PS2? Are they identical to the original game and each other in every way other than exterior packaging and catalog number? I'm hoping compatibility is present in at least one, since Arcade Hits Raiden works fine on the PS2.

Sorry to only add to the confusion, but my SLPS00013 runs fine on my PS2. My PS2 is a grandfatherly SCPH-10000 model too. I'd definitely add the PS2 model to your variables.

More Confusion:

My Original release Japanese version runs fine on my Japanese PS2 (SCPH 37000). It works with ePSXe for me as well, just fired it up and had a go on Raiden II. It booted to the "save settings" screen, which was a bit odd, but the game played OK.

it's funny how the original release seems to be more common than The Best one. Among us, at least.

Err, sorry, I don't know. I play mine on my modded Playstation.

Does The Raiden Project use redbook audio? I can't remember...

Nope, all of the music is synthesized in realtime. Same with Raiden DX, except for the intro/ending cinemas that were added, and the Senkyu demo on the original release.

Strange thing, that. I tried in ePSXe and VGS, my Matrix Infinity chipped U.S. PStwo and an early Japanese PS2, with both mine and my friend's SLPS-00013 and no go. 100% okay on my modded SCPH-7501, though. My copy at least is clean and scratch free. I wonder what the deal is.

Maybe I'll just try to pick up the later Best version and PAL version for the hell of it at this point

Interplay's PC version of Raiden II is Redbook Audio...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

The PC version of Raiden II from Interplay is presented entirely in Redbook audio for your listening pleasure.

The only bad thing about this PC version of Raiden II is that if you play in true Tate mode, the controls are the same as if you are playing the U.S. PSX version of 'The Raiden Project" in Tate mode...you have to hold the controller sideways to play it. (Of course, with a proper Gameshark code, you can play The Raiden Project in true Tate mode with properly mapped controls -- at least this holds true for the PSX version.)

The instruction manual for the PC version of Raiden II states that it was based on the PSX version (hence the fucked up controller issues when playing in Tate mode...unless there's a trick to fix the PC Raiden II controls in Tate mode, that'd be bitchin' cool!)
