The PS4 thread
The PS4 thread
I thought I'd make this thread as the PS4 seems like it might be about to hit it's stride with Bloodborne out, a fair few decent indie games, and some good stuff on the horizon. So, what are you guys playing, what are you looking forward to etc?
has anyone played Axiom Verge yet? looks pretty decent but i tend to err on the side of caution with these kinds of "modern retro" games as even ones with good ideas end up sucking quite often. would be good to hear opinions from people who've played it, if there are any.

Re: The PS4 thread
I played the demo for Axiom Verge. It really came off as a sloppy, sort of lazy take on Metroid. Not a bad thing, really. Don't set your expectations too high, though. Fairly enjoyable.
Re: The PS4 thread
Ohh there's a demo, I didn't even check. So few games seem to have them these days.
Re: The PS4 thread
Axion Verge is awesome.
The PS4 has loads of good games now if you have a wide taste in games. It also has a very decent Netflix client, mine is usually running most of every evening for a mix of films, games, etc.
I'm actually playing Knack right now, it was only £15 in their spring sale so I decided to give it a shot. I don't understand the critical mauling this got, it's a perfectly inoffensive and charming in places action platformer with high production values. Yes, it's very old fashioned but if anyone thought new consoles = new gameplay concepts, they really don't know a thing about gaming. It reminds me of stuff from the PS2 days, I'm enjoying it.

Not getting Axiom Verge until the Vita release. Looks really interesting, but I want to play it on a handheld.
Only things I'm really looking forward to now is Final Fantasy XV and Persona 5.

Portability, simple as that. I do quite a lot of my gaming on the road or on the train, so the quality of modern portable games is a godsend.system11 wrote:Have never understood why people want to play anything on a handheld when a proper version exists.

I'd love to see you expound on this.system11 wrote: The PS4 has loads of good games now if you have a wide taste in games.
So, I'm one of the people who bought the ps4 for bloodborne, and also picked up PSN+ because I heard it was required for the co-op aspects of BB. Still don't really know if that is true.
The cool thing is the PS4 is an active platform for indie titles, and with psn+ there are 3 free games a month. In February I picked up Transistor (which seems cool, but I haven't had a chance to get into), and then put the money down on Resogun and Jamestown+. I recommend both. Last month Rogue Legacy was free...you might want to look into that one if they are still giving it away.
Later this year we should expect Salt and Sanctuary. A 2D version of a souls game. If you aren't completely done with Souls yet, a 2D version might just be what you were looking for. Also waiting for the PS4 version of Darkest Dungeon which I am not sure has had its full release on the PC yet.
In AAA titles, Dragon Age Inquisition looks like a 100+ hour fantasy title (I liked the original DA:O) and then there's Evil Within if you didn't play it on an earlier console. You could also spring for the Dark Souls 2 re-release which comes with all the DLC, remixed enemy placement, prettier graphics and 60 fps. PC gamers got robbed on this and honestly I didn't love DS 2, so there will need to be a lull in titles to lure me back to this title.
I'm coming up a bit empty handed after that, but that's still a few hundred hours worth of gaming right there.

Re: The PS4 thread
the main game i'm still really excited for is No Man's Sky. also looking forward to Persona 5 and hoping that Deception IV another princess gets a western release. my PC is really old so I don't bother playing games on it too much and so the PS4 versions of Shovel Knight and Astebreed are great for me. I will probably pick up Dark Souls 2 again around Christmas or something, when it comes down in price.
so yeah, I don't think there is a huge glut of amazing games out just yet, there is definitely enough good stuff to keep anyone busy.

Re: The PS4 thread
The PS4 will never be able to match up to the PS1, PS2 or, with the current state of things in the industry, even PS3, but for me it has been totally worth it for the 1080p/60fps versions of Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin! and Ryu ga Gotoku 0. Also, Bloodborne, The Last of Us Remastered, GTAV and Puyo Puyo Tetris. But as it stands, there isn't much on the horizon for it that I'm interested in.

Re: The PS4 thread
I got a PS4 for Bloodborne. The only other game I have is The Evil Within, which I like too.
There isn't anything, to my taste, that's coming out until Metal Gear Solid V.
And sadly, since Kojima is not going to be with Konami anymore, that kills Silent Hills and probably Metal Gear Rising 2. So, those were two games I was looking forward to, that are dead in the water.
I'm pissed a bit, at Platinum, for making games for consoles I don't have. lol
I mean, I understand the Nintendo thing, and I got a Wii U, for them. But it makes no sense for Xbone. I mean, I understand that Microsoft are paying them to make a game, so I get THAT. But Xbox doesn't sell ANYTHING in Japan, so it's not going to help their sales there. Not to mention that Platinum sells better in the West anyway.
And the primary audience for Xbone, are not going to be interested at all in Scalebound. So, I don't get it.
Platinum makes games for people who pay them to, but I would have to imagine, after a while, of having games that don't sell well, that it would cause them problems.
End rant.

That Sega apparently isn't finding a way to get overseas releases, or at least higher sales numbers, for a 38-39/40 Famitsu rated game boggles the mind. There is good stuff, but in the overseas territories it seems doomed to remain obscure.Jonathan Ingram wrote:The PS4 [...] for me it has been totally worth it for the 1080p/60fps versions of Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin! and Ryu ga Gotoku 0.
I'm rather conflicted - until the next-gen consoles get some kind of FreeSync implementation, I'm looking at them as inferior to a plausible PC gaming setup. At $400 the price isn't too bad, except that there are too few games that I know about which I would be interested in. Even with Jon's post doubling or tripling the number of interesting titles, it still looks like most of the list are the same boring multiplat games I could get on PC and run in a superior fashion. Conflictingly, I don't love Sony's making Bloodborne exclusive (i.e., doomed to be 30FPS forever) either.

Re: The PS4 thread
I can't blame Sega for the lack of Yakuza games. They localized five of them and the sales have only gotten worse with each release (with Yakuza 4 selling a pitiful 20-30k, while Dead Souls probably did much worse). They're honestly better off spending those resources elsewhere, especially since each game has a lot of text to translate. I am glad that Sony stepped in with whatever program they're running to get Yakuza 5 localized, at least.Ed Oscuro wrote: That Sega apparently isn't finding a way to get overseas releases, or at least higher sales numbers, for a 38-39/40 Famitsu rated game boggles the mind. As iconoclast said, it's probably best that way. At this point, it seems like the demand for games with Japanese flavor has all but dried up unless we are talking about the moe/loli stuff which somehow has managed to carve out a niche for itself. It really does boggle the mind that this has less selling potential in the West than the creepy Neptunia games that NISA regularly localizes to moderate success, but what can you do?Ed Oscuro wrote:That Sega apparently isn't finding a way to get overseas releases, or at least higher sales numbers, for a 38-39/40 Famitsu rated game boggles the mind. I thought Infamous was decent, the character seemed like a total douchebag at first but I came to appreciate him as the story unfolded. The later abilities were more interesting than the early ones too.ACSeraph wrote:We see thatsystem11 wrote:I play a lot of games.![]()

As for Murdered, the plot is pretty good, it feels a little clunky to play at times, possessing cats was entertaining. There's quite a bit of collectable filler, honestly I'd say forget about those and just focus on the actual story activities. I thought the newer Sherlock game was better, it definitely gives you more room to be a detective too - with Sherlock you CAN convict the wrong man while legitimately thinking you're doing the right thing. You could even choose to convict someone who deserves it who may not be the criminal. You don't get to find out until the end. Sherlock is best played in first person mode, the third person mode is much more clunky than Murdered.

titan souls is out next week. looks like a nice 2d shadow of the colossus tribute. there is a demo of it on steam now apparently, I'd give it a go if I didn't think there was a chance my pc would blow up.
Re: The PS4 thread
it's a pretty good month for ps plus games if you ask me. Ok, it's all arty indie games but for me these are exactly the kind of games I'd like to try out but am slightly reluctant to buy. The one I am enjoying the most by far is race the sun. Really great and addictive little game.
On a slightly different note, I wish I hadn't watched some videos for puyo puyo tetris. It looks amazing! It feels a bit silly spending the £90 or so it will cost to import this and get a second ps4 controller just so I can play yet another variation on falling block puzzle game with my girl friend. I will probably cave eventually though.

Re: The PS4 thread
What does the PS4 have right now in terms of (good) current and (promising) upcoming exclusives vs. xbone? Getting towards the end of my backlog and starting to think about a new console. Probably won't go out of my way for download only titles.
I'm more interested in exclusives over slightly better graphical performance in multiplatform games, so the PS4's technical edge doesn't really matter. Erring towards pimping my PC for No Man's Sky as I already have a PC flightstick. Halo 5/Gears 4/Scalebound/ReCore have xbone ahead at the moment.

Re: The PS4 thread
What I'm interested in, personally:
Xbox One:
Halo 5 (+ The MCC) - Halo has been in a downward spiral (quality wise) for the last 5+ years imo, but this game is fantastic. The campaign is great (much, much better than H4) and it may have the best multiplayer in the series. I'll need to play it a lot more before I can confidently say that, though.
Sunset Overdrive - Easily the best 'open world game with super powered characters' ever. Great art, great mechanics, great graphics, fun weapons to use. The story isn't good & the writing goes too far with the 'hurr hurr you're playing a video game' jokes, but whatever.
Titanfall* - Call of Duty with giant robots and good traversal mechanics. It's a good game, but I don't play it because Halo is much better.
D4 - Swery game (creator of Deadly Premonition). I never finished it so I won't comment on how good it is, but I thought DP was more interesting. D4 has an edge for not having shitty gameplay, though (it's an ADV)
Ori and the Blind Forest* - 2D action/adventure game with nice art. I bought it, but haven't played it yet.
Crimson Dragon - Rail shooter from the director of Panzer Dragoon. Again, I have it but haven't played it yet.
Dead Rising 3* - And again, I have it, but haven't played it.
-
Scalebound - Kamiya's next game, so it's guaranteed to be great.
Cuphead - Great art and animation. The gameplay videos don't look that good to me, though.
Raiden V
Natsuki Chronicles - New Qute STG.
ReCore - might be cool
Phantom Dust - might be dead
PS4:
Earth Defense Force 4.1 - Best game on the system.
Ryu ga Gotoku/Yakuza series (Ishin*, Zero*, Kiwami, 6) - I've only played Ishin and it's fantastic. Probably my #2 game on the system. It gets some bonus points because I'm a fan of the Edo period and there aren't many good games to play in that setting (I don't like Way of the Samurai much).
Bloodborne - Great game, but too shallow and stripped down in comparison to Dark Souls 1 & 2 imo. The DLC should make it better.
Until Dawn - Good movie.
Dragon Quest Heroes - DQ musou game. Looks fun to me, but I haven't played it.
-
Persona 5*
Nier: Automata - Got super high hopes for this. Nier has the best story I've ever seen in a video game. No competition. With Platinum in charge of the gameplay, this could be an incredible game.
Ni-Oh - Had a really cool trailer. I'm hesitant because it's being developed by Team Ninja. It will probably be trash if Yosuke Hayashi is directing, but it could be good if someone else is in charge.
Gravity Rush 2 - The first game was cool. This one should be better.
Assault Suits Leynos - Coming out in December. I haven't tried the demo(s), but it looks like it'll be a great 2D mech action game.
Street Fighter V* - I'm not that excited for this any more, but maybe it'll be great.
Ys 8* - Looks like a continuation for the Ys 7/Celceta type of game. Should be good, but it's a long ways off.
Odin Sphere* - Already looks a hell of a lot better than the original.
The Last Guardian - Doesn't look that good to me, but I'm still interested because I really liked SotC.
Dragon Quest XI*
Shenmue III*
* - not truly exclusive since they're on other platforms, but not the Xbone/PS4.
I think the Xbone is a little better right now in terms of exclusives, but the PS4 has a brighter future. I hope MS invests in some more Japanese games.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Re: The PS4 thread
I can't say exactly how long it was since I took a break half way through to play online, but I think it took me around 7-8 hours to beat it on Heroic. Fairly short, but everything that's in there is good for the most part. Some battles feel like they drag on a little too long and there's a boss that you fight repeatedly, but those are the only bad things that stuck out to me. What really helps is the more complex level design (lots of verticality to make use of the new mechanics) and greatly improved Promethean design (both the enemies and their weapons are 10x better than they were in Halo 4, where they were awful.)

Your name reminded me that I am interested in The Iconoclasts, which is FINALLY coming out next year.
Konjak game, on PS4, Vita, and PC.
I'm usually not that into indi games, as they always seem overrated, and overhyped, but Noitu Love 2 was great, and the demo to Iconoclasts was very promising.
Took 5 years!

Well I caved in and finally bought a game digitally where physical was available. Call Of Duty, there's no chance I'll want to resell it before it's worth $5 and it'll be something I play frequently in short bursts while actually working on more involved games, so .. yeah. It's actually already downloaded but there's a timer when you try to launch.

Re: The PS4 thread
I'm actually surprised, at the amount of games I am looking forward to. If they are good, or actually come out next year, is yet to be seen.
On the list of interest:
Dark Souls III
Nier: Automata (kind of takes the sting out of Scalebound being XBone exclusive)
Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir
Gravity Rush 2
The Iconoclausts
Dragon Quest XI
The Last Guardian
Shantae: Half Genie Hero (will probably get this on the Wii U though)
Here's hoping for the best. It's probably the most games I've looked forward to, in a LONG time.
