I like the HRAP EX-SE that stevens linked. I think in the $100-150 range it is the best but it’s quite a few years old now, so it might be hard to track down a new one.
+ best case, it’s like a mini candy-cab panel/enclosure.
+ all stock seimitsu parts (this is unique to the “SE” model)
+ button are easily swappable
- stick uses a ribbon cable, which means modding it (or swapping a stick) is going to require some snipping and re-soldering or adding quick-connects to some VERY thin wires on the ribbon cable.
- disassembling and reassembling the stick is a tad tricky, as a screw/nut or two are in a hard to reach area.
Hori also makes a newer mini viewlix designed HRAP (Hori Real Arcade Pro) that are much easier to find and have several variations such as this one (i havne’t used one but I’m sure they are comparable:

I forgot to mention the Qanba sticks are popular too. Sold out at this store, but for $60 it’s hard to go wrong if you are on a budget: http://videogamesnewyork.com/qanba-q1-arcade-stick-360/

I would suggest this Qanba stick with all Seimitsu parts, simply because I prefer the LS-58 to the LS-32 (in the HRAP EX SE):

Some really good info
I rushed in with a offer earlier on this..

Just realised it's not the 'SE' model
What you reckon?

Well if you have to buy it there are much worse sticks you could be stuck with:DGRUSS wrote:Some really good info

I'm not sure about the stick but the buttons are stock. That stick has all the pros and cons chempop listed. The buttons are really easy to swap.

the HRAP-ex is a sanwa jlf stick with hori buttons. you can swap a seimitsu into it pretty easily if you want, but the jlf will work fine for shmups.GRUSS wrote:If someone could confirm the actual stick make I might try a counter offer
his price is definitely high imo. not too many people looking for a used hrap ex. the madcatz te sticks are far more desirable. i wouldn't pay more than $80 for that guy.

My wife and I found this while browsing a Goodwill store and picked it up for $6:

I put batteries in it, and it works, though I haven't acquired any shmups for my 360 yet. Any opinions on this? I'm sure it's a substandard stick, but for entry level shmupping, would it do the job? Anyone ever try to upgrade one of these with other buttons, stick, etc.?

NICE FIND FRO! And welcome back
Can’t go wrong for $6! i haven’t opened one up, but there are various videos and thread on stick modding sites:
this was one of the first hits googling: “hori tekken 6 mod”
http://forums.shoryuken.com/discussion/ ... ous-thread
Hope you find some useful info and enjoy using your new(old) stick.
Definitely pick up some of the region free (or compatible with your console) shmups, 360 has over a dozen cave releases and another handful of worthwhile gem such as raiden 4 & Aces collection, and Eschatos, to name a few.

Thanks for the info, I'll check that thread out! And yes, definitely plan on both Raiden games, Eschatos, Otomedius, and other region-free games. The trick is finding them in the wild, which is nigh-impossible in the rural area where I live. I'll likely end up having to get them onlinechempop wrote:NICE FIND FRO! And welcome back![]()
