This is one rare console that I still plan on picking up, and I'm certain that there are others on this forum who are interested in it as well, so I browsed through the Hall of Light's list of Amiga CD32 games for shmups. Here's the list; please feel free to mention any mistakes or omissions:

That's right, I should have mentioned Xenon 2 (MAN I hate that game!) and Battlestorm.
Battlestorm looks pretty interesting; the Hall of Light describes it as being a multi-directional shmup, and from that screenshot, it looks like the first level of Thunder Force 2.

Chaos Engine is Guantletlike shooter. Very Good IMHO. If you like it check also - Alien Breed Tower Assault (with Bonus Alien Breed 2). Superb games.
Main reasons to own AMIGA CD32 for shmups lover are:
Project X, Disposable Hero - excellent horizontal shmups with superb graphics (in 16 bits standards) and good music. Project X is very, very hard. I played on A500 - maybe cd32 version is easier...
Super Stardust - one of the best Asteroids clone all time!
Overkill - superb Defender clone.
Banshee - very good vertical shmup with stylish graphics.
Another good reason to buy cd 32 - is unnoficial compilation:
BEST 200 AMIGA GAMES ON CD 32 - many good 2d platformers, shooters etc.
If I remember - great Apidya, Z-Out are in this compilation. Maybe - Uridium 2 and X-Out also. I have to check it.
If You like - run'n gun games - there are CDTV versions of turrican 1 and 2. Turrican 2 - is one of the best Turrican ever!!

There are many shmups:
Agony - horizontal - very good. Fantasy theme. You are an owl. Very good graphics - similar to Kolibri. Orchestral music. Amiga Exclusive?
Apidya - horizontal - superb. Insect theme. You are a bee. Excellent graph and music. Must a have! Amiga Exclusive.
Banshee - vertical - very good. Stylish graph. Something like Strikers. Amiga exclusive.
Atomic Robo Kid - okayish port.
R-Type 1 & 2 - ok ports. Not very good but ok.
Overkill - defender clone - very good and smooth graph. Great playability. If you like defender - must a have!. Amiga exclusive.
Battle Squadron - vertical - very good. The best version of BS - much better than average Megadrive port. Good music.
Revenge of Defender (???)
Cybernoid 1 & 2 - ok ports of C64 shooters - without scrolling.
Deluxe Galaga (???)
Project X - horizontal - very good but very, very hard. Excellent graph and music. Beautiful game but too difficult. Amiga version much better than PC.
Saint Dragon - horizontal - good. Good port.
Silk Worm - horizontal - one of the best ports of this game, Better than arcade??
Space Harrier - average port,
Super Space Invaders - average. Mybe below average.
Super Stardust - one of the best Asteroids clone. Super Graph and music. Must a have for asteroids fans.
SWIV - vertical - very good. Lightyears before SNES or Megadrive ports. The Best SWIV on earth. Very good and smooth graphics and good sfx. One of the best Amiga shooters.
T-Racer - horizontal - good. Project X rip off. Worse but with good playability and graph. Amiga exclusive.
Thunderblade - poor port.
X-Out - horizontal - good. Underwater shmup.
Xenon 2 Megablast - horizontal - good. The Best version of Xenon 2. Stylish graph.
Z-Out - horizontal. Very good. R-Type clone. Good graph and very good music. Must a have. Amiga exclusive.
Zarathursta - multidirectional - average.
If You can buy/borrow or copy this compilation - your cd32 will be very good machine for 2d shmups. Greetings.
