CAVE shooters on iOS - views?
Just played a couple of Cave shooters on iOS.
They do look very pretty, and I'd say they arent bad ports - but its still on a mobile phone.

Anyone feel as though you wont get the right "experience" on a phone?

Apologies - looks like there is a thread about this already:

Personally I just cant get too excited about the mobile games - I think it adds a lot to have a physical joystick (and a bigger screen).

I accept them for what they are and tbh I have passed many an hour in waiting rooms, public transport etc playing the Cave games I have on my iTouch. It's hardly ideal, but it's not a wholly horrible experience by any stretch.

Depends if it's a port of an arcade game or if it's a game designed for ios (like DonPaccin) in regard to getting the right experience. Ships are supposed to have different speed movements for example in DFK and when you play it on a phone you can just zip around the screen with any ship so it's a million times easier to clear, buttons are awkward and so on. But they're still entertaining.

The phone games are fun to scratch the itch, but they're not satisfying in the same way the real thing is. Just accept them for what they are. I find the simpler ones work better (Mushi and DOJ) because the ones like Espgaluda 2 and Deathsmiles rely way too much on the large number of buttons onscreen. Digital buttons really make it tricky. I also suggest keeping autobomb on, it helps mitigate those deaths that can happen due to difficult of playing on a small touchscreen...

mushimesama and DOJ are the only ones I have. Eh I suck at them due to my fingers being pretty long and big so I have to make some awkward movements and yeah...
I would play them if I didn't have any other choice but otherwise nah.

They're fun in their own way and should't be compared to the real ports/versions.
If the game is completely designed for mobile however (Donpaccin, the new deathsmiles one etc..) then they have potential to be REALLY fun. In their own way

This basically. Probably explains why I usually bypass the app icons for Bug Princess 2 Black Label, Espgaluda II HD, DoDonPachi Resurrection HD, and DoDonPachi Blissful Death for DoDonPachi Maximum - it's not a port. Though it probably is as much a 'DoDonPachi' game as R-Type Tactics/Command is an 'R-Type' game. Given the opportunity for the others I rather play the Xbox 360 ports.Cagar wrote:They're fun in their own way and should't be compared to the real ports/versions.

In general this seems to also apply to most non-Cave games. I use the iOS 'Strikers 1945-2' port but will bypass that even for the much maligned 'Strikers 1945 Plus Portable' port if my PS Vita happens to be handy. As always there are exceptions: rRootage Online HD is a good translation of the PC original and Gridrunner is a great mobile adaptation of the VIC-20 original.
But in the end the involvement with a smartphone game is mostly opportune and casual - typically a smartphone port won't get much play while a PCB (one should be so lucky), console or PC (incl. MAME) original/port is accessible.

I like them for what they are and luckily they don't try to be anything more. ESPGaluda 2 has a great arrange mode, probably one of my favourites in any CAVE game. I'm not a fan of Death Smiles though, not because the game plays badly but because the screen can get over cluttered with fingers and mask the action. I feel like I'm constantly peering around my thumbs to see the screen.

Only if Cave's mobile division would've added iCade support or bluetooth digital joystick support for use on them iPhones, iTouch and iPads, that'd solve the dreaded issue of the ol' fingers being in the way when the action gets too intense during a serious danmaku session.

i like the for what they are: shmupping on the go. Yes, they are easier, yes, you can get your finger all over the screen and hide the action from view... but still, they are GREAT fun when you're waiting for a plane, while on the WC, train, bus, metro or whatever.
The one i pleay the most is DDP:R HD and BugPrincess 2 BL ... i wish there were some more CAVE love on the phones... but well, they make me burn some time while in a situation where i cannot have my laptop or XBox with me.
Enjoy them for what they are: shmupping on the go... with great graphics, good scoring, sick bullet patterns and (almost) flawless presentation.

I played Espgaulda II and DFK a bit. They're OK; Espgaulda's iOS mode was leagues better than DFK's.
I remember them slaughtering my battery, though.
How do they compare on iPad vs. iPhone? Seems like the extra space might make things more enjoyable but I haven't bothered to redownload either to try it out.

Apparently the D-pad on an MFi controller can be used in DeathSmiles.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:Only if Cave's mobile division would've added iCade support or bluetooth digital joystick support for use on them iPhones.
